Great job dad! Another tip, on later Chryslers and Jeeps, you can pull engine codes by turning the key in the ignition on and off three times. Any codes will be displayed in the odometer.

A whole bunch of good advice, but the most important thing I found was you teaching your son and then surprising him 👍☮️

How did you know I was about to start shopping for a used vehicle? This is insanely useful. Thanks so much for making this video. Also, when your college age son will say "I love you" to his dad on camera, you know you've done something right. Good job all around. God bless ya.

As a mechanic I would suggest changing the oil in the transfer and axles not just checking it. These two fluids are more often than not overlooked and never replaced.

I will never be a father (I have been a step dad twice for a few short years @ a time, till I was replaced), for me the best part of this video was seeing your son's surprise & gratitude for you giving him the car. And then @ the end as he drives off he tells you he loves you. I am extremely jealous.

Plus it reminded me of stuff I want done to my oldest son's car before he heads off to college 10 hours away. I love the wheeling videos but the every day stuff is great to know too!

Another area to check is chassis rails or unibody frame to make sure it is straight and has not been in a big accident. Also check blow bye by opening the oil fill cover and see if there is any puffing that suggests heavy crank case pressure as exhaust gasses pass the compression rings in the cylinders. Not good if the blow bye can lift the oil fill cap and make it rattle Everything else you mentioned is pretty good advice.

Was a very good assessment of the standard and same old Jeep problems. You pay your money and take your chances. I bought my Commander knowing its mechanical and electronic problems and slowly worked my way through each problem. I feel confident now in this Commander's reliability of the 4.7 V-8 and the running gear. I understand that 150,000 miles are the factory projected life of the engine and that the engine is typically not rebuildable. So be it this one is at136,000. Enjoy it as long as I can.

I've seen (on another channel) where a 2011 Chevy had a tail light out. Typically it's a bulb issue, but not on that car! You have tp change the entire tail light assembly ($300+ new)! And the newer vehicles are full of neat surprises like this! Also, when you change fluids in an auto trans, you should (especially if the fluid is beat up/burnt) change the trans filter. Dropping the pan will give a good insight into the heath of a transmission also (metal, etc...). Great job on the video! 👍
@DependableAutoTruck
@DependableAutoTruck 2 года назад
i worked for dodge before the trans flush came out i think the best way to do is have it flushed then change the filters most now have 2 one screw on and one bolt on in the trans pan then you have the chance to wash out any sediments that were left in the oil pan of trans then every other time just flush. there is a magnet in most all pans its a good idea to inspect for particles that way you can catch aproblem sometimes before it gets serious

@@lenharding72 i dream of a youtube algorithm that actually works for humanity and promotes work thats useful, well edited/put-together material. instead of trying to compete with ticktock and such. i found this channel from another channel suggesting it. So as far as i have noticed, channels themselves have to verbally recommend other channels. i have not found a single channel I enjoy from youtube itself. every single one has been from word of mouth from real people I know or from the people who curate said channels. the only stuff i get from youtube itself is shallow, useless and redundant content that is 90% fluff and 1% original content with 9% being adds if not more.

Bigest thing I struggles with was finding solid frame. Was looking at old J10, Jeep Gladiator, M710, Chevy K10... have a fairly good 1982 K10. Planed on transmission swap, decided to do engine as well. Wish I knew the mechanical clutch became hydraulic in 1984... oh well I will eventually get that swapped also. I was just looking for good bones. Now I'm waiting on my Fiba bone to grow into plate and screws.

Regarding automatic transmission fluids, most transmission build shops will suggest dropping the pan and changing the filter then refill with fresh fluid. Then, once that fluid is circulated for a period of time, change it again. Reason for that is...it doesn't "shock" the bands and friction clutches with new fresh "friction modifiers" all at once which can cause issues that never existed. Flushing the fluid is fine when a new vehicle goes in for its first fluid change at say 5,000 to 10,000 miles as most of the wear occurs during this time period. Then, every 30,000 you can flush or just change what's in the pan. Problems start when a high mileage trans has never had a fluid change and suddenly it goes in for a complete flush, at least that is what most trans builders will say. Also, most vehicles benefit by having a junior or "correction" Trans-Go shift kit installed to take out the known problems that are in the weak OEM design. Most of them can be installed without having to remove the transmission, all access is there once the pan is removed. Then, there are some aux transmission coolers than will benefit some car owners.

Bought a 2016 Duramax everything was great except for two things first right rear tire. It was basically bald so i knew the previous owner liked burnouts Second i could see oil on frame and such just could not find leak, Finally one of my gm mechanic's found the issue. The transmission housing near transfer case, fluid was coming thru housing, It was so pouros that it was just coming thru when warm. Thank god for extended warranty.

Also to state that while checking with a obd2 scanner check your monitor staus. If you have more then two incomplete more then likely the codes where reset and may have a code not being read due to the engine not cycling enough yet. Typically if the o2 sensor is not complete then it was reset in the last 50 miles roughly.

In my experience when flushing the transmission as long as you flush in the direction of flow it's safe, a few machines that aren't sold anymore are designed to back flush, that's when s***happens. Also I'm not sure if it was covered but a fuel filter should always be changed if applicable..

Never flush your transmission with any kind of "power flush" it can and will most of the time, from my experience from working at a transmission shop, cause valve body issues in the transmission. Which in turn causes shifting and slipping issues.

A great vidio, you and your son are spot on.❤❤. One step further on the spare tire, if it was at 14 Lbs. It could have been, ( if you have the tools ), to take the spare tire off and check for leaks, it didn't start out at 14 lbs. When you need a spare and it's back at a level below safe, not a good place to be. Love your tip for news print on glass, l have been freaking people out over that one for like 45 - years plus. Just don't use the shiny paper. Bottle Jack's are 👍great, but wasn't your son holding a sizzer jack? Just wondering, l wasn't pointing out a mistake. Even though? Ahh! 🤔🤭🤫😛. Thanks for the great vidio. You are a great father. ✌🏻🔑, 🌤 🇨🇦 👨‍🦽 😎.

All good points BJ. Congrats to your boy / nice surprise Some advice to the novice when purchasing a used vehicle as their primary source of transportation, the first of many things they should consider.., Budget: What is the maximum amount of money a person is willing to spend on a used vehicle, this is also factoring in the cost of Insurance ? Think before you act,, "What exactly are you looking for? Why do you need it and for what purpose will it serve? The type of vehicle should always be a determining factor as well. While a shiny sports car may be appealing to many, not everyone can afford the insurance, the up keep, initial repairs or costly replacement parts. This is in comparison to an ordinary 4 banger 4 door grocery getter. Chrome won't get you home: Don't be fooled or enticed in buying a pig wearing lipstick. They say looks is only skin deep, the same applies to used vehicles. Not all damage is clearly visible Now that you settled on a purchase price of $3,500 as an example... the chances are, it's worth less based on the mileage or because it was rode hard and put away wet. People usually sell off their used vehicles when they start giving them trouble, worn out and costing money, not because of the age. Sellers typically ask more than what a car is usually worth to try and get their money back, so try to haggle there's always room, but only after you first identified and discussed all outstanding issues that come with it. You got what you paid for: If you buy anything in an "As is, Where As" condition, be prepared, you are also legally accepting all the issues that come with it, warts and all....that means all the rust, body filler, dents and every repair between the front and rear bumper that will make it safe and road worthy. There's no coming back...,You don't get to return it and get your back . It also helps by having a second set of eyes, someone with mechanical-know-how to come with you when you go to look at a used vehicle like Bleeping Jeep, people like that are invaluable. They could save you a lot of time and wasted hard earned cash.

As someone who rebuilt transmissions for a living, the best advice I can give is if it’s a Chrysler product and it has an automatic don’t buy it!
@Garth2011
@Garth2011 2 года назад
Agreed...thats one very stupid plan that car owners use when it comes to windshield wipers. Most of them say "I hardly every use them" yet when you do need them and they aren't in good condition, they are worse than not using them. It's like the spare tire, "I rarely need one" yet what happens when you do need one and you are 50 miles from town ? Some people will spend enormous amounts of money just to save $20 for decent set of wiper blades when in a pinch or a spare tire that's flat and a huge tow bill to get one.
@bwofficial1776
@bwofficial1776 2 года назад
People who live in the desert where it rains once a year get a surprise when they need their wipers and the blades have been baking in the heat and UV. I'll never buy a car without a spare because fix-a-flat + a weak air pump don't work on sidewall cuts.
