How to Sing Whistle Register-Works for Guys and Girls
All singers want to learn how to sing in whistle register.
Who doesn’t want to get those crazy high notes like Ariana Grande, Mariah Carey, Minnie Ripperton and Adam Lopez?
But while many of the greatest singers are able to sing in whistle register, very few vocal coaches know what creates the whistle register.
As a result many singing teachers don’t know how to teach whistle register.
Today, I want to show you exactly what creates whistle register and how to find and develop it in your voice.
Along the way, we’ll destroy a couple of the singing myths about what creates whistle register and I’ll show you what actually creates whistle register.
Whistle register is the highest vocal register in the voice. And while it may be tempting to think of whistle as an extension of the head voice, it is not the same thing.
Myth #1: Whistle Register is an extension of the head voice.
This is totally untrue. While many singers find their whistle register by exploring their head voice, the vibrational coordination that creates whistle register is totally different.
Myth #2: Whistle Register is created by air “whistling” behind the vocal folds.
Again, this myth is untrue. Air flowing behind the vocal folds will not create any sound. And in order for a vocal register to have voice, there must be vibration in the vocal folds.
So here’s what actually creates whistle register:
Whistle register is created by the front or anterior part of the vocal folds coming together and vibrating.
As opposed to chest voice and head voice, where the full length of the vocal folds are vibrating, in whistle register only the front part of the vocal folds are vibrating.
Since just the front part of the vocal cords are vibrating, you’re able to hit incredibly high notes that you won’t be able to do just in your chest or head voice.
Now that you know what creates whistle register, let’s start finding it in your voice.
I’m going to give you 5 techniques for finding whistle register and then we’ll develop it in your singing.
Whistle Register Technique #1: The Yawny Whistle-In this technique, we’ll find the whistle register by pretending that we’re yawning.
As we push a bit of air against our vocal cords in a yawn mode, you’ll start to hear the voice whistle.
This is also my favorite exercise because the voice is so relaxed.
Whistle Register Technique #2: The Whiny Puppy-In this technique, you’ll find whistle register by pretending that you’re a whining little puppy.
As you whimper and whine, you’ll find that the voice will whistle at the top part of your voice.
Whistle Register Technique #3: The Bird Whistle-In this technique, you’ll find whistle register by pretending that you’re an exotic bird.
As you create an almost parrot-like sound on the word “caw” you’ll find that the voice starts to whistle.
Whistle Register Technique #4: The Weight Lifter-In this technique, you’ll pretend that you’re lifting something heavy and gently push a bit of air against your closed vocal cords.
Whistle Register Technique #5: Speak Mariah-Mariah Carey is well known for her ability to sing in whistle register.
In interviews about her rare talent, Mariah Carey mentions that as a sick kid, she would continue talking even if her voice was hoarse.
This squeaky-speaking will allow you to find the whistle register on normal words.

You cant support whistles. It's disconnect like falsetto., Your chords are just open and you cant control the air. The difference in comparison with falsetto is that whistles require little work and air, almost like holding your breath... Like the opposite of vocal fry.

@ramseyvoicestudio
@ramseyvoicestudio 5 лет назад
Hey Phoenix, if the sound is cracking, it's possible that you're in head voice register rather than whistle. In my experience, if you're just hearing air, it sounds like you probably need to develop your mixed voice first. Then tackle whistle. Thank you so much for making this video! I found that my daily voice lessons were fine for chest voice throat and lower head voice but that I wasnt able to hit high head voice. I searched how to do whistle voice and your video was the most legitimate looking one. Wow, after one session I can hit high head voice notes in the song I wanted to sing with. I cant wait to see what I can do after adding this to my regular voice exercises and doing them for a few weeks. Super exciting. Thank you. I was confused with terminology, I wasnt actually looking for whistle voice, I was looking for really high head voice. But this works for that. All I do is let more air pass through the vocal cords while doing your exercises so its just as high but not as squeaky and it primes the chords to do those super high vocals like at the end of "This Means War" sung by Madelyn Baily or the ending notes of "Wicked Game" sung by Daisy Grey.

@ramseyvoicestudio
@ramseyvoicestudio 4 года назад
Hey Ricky, good questions. It sounds like you're finding a disconnected whistle register on the top. Connecting the head voice and whistle together takes a lot of practice and work. For me, it feels like making the switch as cleanly and quickly as possible, but I've seen some women just naturally start singing in whistle as they go higher. It's a mixed bag.

Hey Insert, take your time and develop the whistle slowly. That's the best way to get those higher notes. Also, consider that you'll never find a G6 in a song for a guy, so if you're just trying to hit higher notes, that's fine. But I would focus more on making sure that those notes SOUND GOOD in songs.

Hey! I’m a classically trained coloratura soprano and I have always been able to do these high notes in my flageolet but they always come out SUPER loud and very clear. How would a coloratura who often sings up to F6 for their rep do whistle notes that are soft and have more air in them? I love the ease that Mariah has in going in and out of registers and it sounds like she’s barely making any sound whereas whenever I sing up there, it sounds hella loud and unlike the rest of the genre that I am singing. I feel like it would give feedback on a mic if I sang them this loudly too. I am trying to find ways to teach whistles in a non-classical way to other really high sopranos too. I love these exercises but they always end up with me have a really good closure of the vocal folds and a lot of volume.
@rocioolayabolanos7725
@rocioolayabolanos7725 2 года назад
The exact same thing happens to me. And I'm feeling a lot of pressure in classes to hit A6 in concert but I'm not comfortable singing that high outside the classroom... So I need to develop my whistle register! I'll wait for any answer they give you! Hopefully it can help both of us! 💪
@brielcantor
@brielcantor Год назад
Hey! The more air you put in it, the harder will be to reach high notes, because the bigger air volume always demands more space or pressure to be released, and when you sing higher notes, the space between your vocal chords reduces even more instead of get bigger. So the space demanded to sing with more air being bigger, consequently the vocal chords will vibrate slower, causing lower notes or in some cases, even damaging the voice. So the secret is: the higher is the note, the less air you need to sing it. And after this, practicing is the only thing to do 😊 You can make a low volume, slow speed glissando exercise from an octave below and raising up to your higher notes, and going back. After, raising half to half tone until the highest note you can do clearly, always with low volume. This will improve even more your muscles without damage, because this is not the vocal pitch that need to be worked out, but the muscles that help the sound being produced. You should feel no pain, but a sensation that your muscles are activated, something like if you have done strenght exercises, but with your voice. Hope I could help you both. Tell me later if it worked. It did for me

Hello! Thank you you for posting this video. I'd like to ask you a question. I'm a soprano and a few weeks ago I was singing in my head voice and discovered my whistle register. I got so excited and I started singing in this register for two days. After that, I basically lost my voice for like 3 weeks. It wasn't completely gone but I could barely talk, let alone sing! I want to sing in my whistle register now, and knowing that I have it but can't do it healthily is KILLING ME! As soon as I try to sing a C6 or higher my voice is breathy right afterwards and the next day I can barely speak. How do I do this properly without any recurring consequences on my voice? Is there anymore information about the whistle register?
@ramseyvoicestudio
@ramseyvoicestudio 5 лет назад
Hey Naimah, first off, congrats on finding whistle. That's super cool. To answer your question, here's a ton more info on whistle that's more in-depth than I could go in the video: www.ramseyvoice.com/whistle-register/ My biggest recommendation: take it slow. Whistle is a great vocal effect, but when it's new, it's very easy to overwork the vocal folds since you're locking them down so much. Practice for 5 minutes a day and build up from there. Good luck!
