Bryce thanks for this. I dabbled in backpacking for little bit before my dog died (he was my camping buddy), so it’s been tough to get back out there. I’m motivated to try again next year because I did really enjoy it. Thanks again

Sorry about your dog. I cannot even begin to fathom hiking without Gus. I did hike with Bryce for 5 days but was a substandard substitute, plus he kept pulling at the leash.... :) Just kidding. But seriously get back out there it's the best therapy for what ails a human.

I’m going to check out that soap! I don’t normally bring any. Heavy, but I do know that if I get cut or scraped or a bug bite starts getting infected, soap seems to be the cure while camping, so it would behoove me to bring on longer backpack trips. Thanks for the tips.

Weight is huge if you are hiking longer trails. My first trek of the JMT was rough because of my age and the amount of weight in my pack. If there had been a ZPacks store on trail I would have replaced everything there and then.
@Swearengen1980
@Swearengen1980 8 месяцев назад
Can't say I entirely agree. Your fitness level plays a huge role. Granted, the average hikers I see are surprisingly not in particularly great shape. I know an older guy (late 50s) who can hike the steep slopes of a mountain, not a simple trial, with a 60 lb ruck....granted, he's a pretty jacked, former military dude, but he can do a long trail day and night with that weight and be cool. I can do comfortably do 10 miles a day with about 30 lbs. I'd rather hit the gym and get in better shape than to try and go ultralight with 15 lbs and short myself on gear.

Your sarcasm is very abstract. You hop from one topic to another without much explanation, to make it funnier, but not everybody gets the references... That's. why not everyone undertands you. Try to make the connections in your references more clear and give people some time to think about it. That should help 😅

In the UK the law says that you can only carry a small folding pocket knife so that has put me off backpacking. I tried it! but chopping wood for a fire was a nightmare.
@Swearengen1980
@Swearengen1980 8 месяцев назад
Every time someone from the UK (or similar Euro Nations) shits on America for our guns, I always point back to how it progressed that y'all can't even carry a damn knife (not directed at you)....I just can't imagine being told what hobby or way of life I can or can't have. In any case, can you not use a fuel cannister or some other form of fire that doesn't rely on wood over there? $60 for a Soto Amicus or more for a MSR Pocket Rocket 2 and a $6 canister of fuel and you're good to go ( assuming you mean actual backpacking and not camping where you may have the need to cook actual food).

Are camp saws (Fiskars for example) allowed? They work very well.
@nicksam5518
@nicksam5518 7 месяцев назад
I have a number of ax''s and hatchets for car camping. I have recently rediscovered smaller folding saws. They work so much better! could you in the UK not buy or use a saw?my silky was like 60$, but a cheapie like bahco is like 20 bucks.(in the USA)
@Ellie-rx3jt
@Ellie-rx3jt 6 месяцев назад
Uk law allows you to carry any knife if you can justify your reason for carrying it. Not that you would generally use a knife for "chopping wood". A small saw would be more appropriate if in an area where gathering wood is permitted. But yeah, have carried mora frost fixed blade bushcraft knives all over the countryside. Never even had someone question it. Not like the police are lurking on the hills in the evening anyway 😂
@Ellie-rx3jt
@Ellie-rx3jt 6 месяцев назад
@@panhandlejake6200 Yes, as long as you can legally gather firewood in the area having a saw is totally fine. More official guides tend to recommend against axes, but plenty of people use them without issue. What people forget when it comes to UK knife laws is that if you have a legitimate reason (no, "self defense" doesn't count) to be carrying a knife you aren't restricted to the 3" non locking rule. And that there's very little chance of even being questioned over it, since your knife/saw/axe should be in your pack when you aren't using it and the police don't tend to hang out in the countryside.
