I prefer tarp or cowboy camping whenever possible. Below 50 degrees the mosquitoes will leave you alone. Also snakes aren't going to move around much at all below 50. The problem I have found with checking the forecast for the overnight low is that generally that low temperature isn't reached until early morning. I've been laying awake with mosquitoes buzzing around my face at 11 pm with the air temp still in the 60s when the overnight low was to be 45. That night it didn't drop below 50 until about 3 AM, and I didn't get much sleep until then. You can cover your face with bug spray but that persistent buzzing sound still keeps me awake. The ticks continue to be an issue until it's below freezing, but I don't think I've ever gotten one while sleeping, I usually pick them up while walking around.
Why? Because modern tents are super light, they're easy to pack up, they're a simple, quick, effective way to deal with disease-carrying skeeters and ticks, they're more spacious than a bivvy, they're warmer than a fly, and they're some insurance against stormwater on the ground.
Sometimes you can find puffy jackets at j.c. penny t.j. Maxx for 40 to 50 dollars they weigh about 10 and a half ounces. Used to use one on the PCT. Now I have enlightened equipment torrid.
I refuse to risk it. I carry on my bag with just the sleeping bag and pad (maybe some clothing items) in it so it’s not huge and put everything else in the bag I check. No trekking poles, fuel, trowels or sporks.
Thx 4 suffering 4 us !!!!!😊 This is the blow back from " ultra lightweight " BS 😮!! And lots of companies cash in on the ul bs. But sum stuff is legit 😮!! ATB amigo
Good video! I 100% agree that the huge cutout on the Nemo 2P rainfly is a *stupid* design choice(Dear Nemo, it’s called a 2 walled tent, not a 1.7 walled tent, for a reason.🙄), and is the sole reason I won’t buy it as the lighter replacement for my Kelty TN2.
the only visual issue i see ( never heard of or used one ) is that u have to go long to get the 26" !!!! i dont want or need that long of apad.... hek, i'm not sure it'll fit lenght wise, in my 1p tent !!! i love a wide pad cuz i'm a tosser n turner !!!!! and, IMHO, i dont think a 24ISH oz pad is out of line if great sleep, comfort, r value are n place !!!! my rest is very important if i dont want to hit the wall just cuz of poor sleep...... EVERY NITE !!!!!!. NO, I'LL CARRY THE EXTRA 16 OZ'S !!!😊
From Thermarest pump sack, I removed the draw cord and cut off that lid from inflation hole. Still need to seamseal the darn thing. Half the air escapes through the seams.
Well, as of today (it (AeroCloud Elite) just arrived today) I own both of those Kilos Gear pads. You mentioned "comfort". If you can't sleep comfortably on a pad, what's the point? I can sleep on the ground and be uncomfortable. For me, comfort is where it's at.
Thanks for the review . I’ve been looking for a new pad. I’m going to try out the Kilos gear pads. The Flextail mini pump will deflate that Flextail pad very quick. 🦉
Miranda clearly did not do her research into the most honest and interesting You Tuber that still use silnylon tents. WTF was she thinking? F#*€ that cr@p! 🤣🤣
It’s all ❤ bros! Love all of your videos and your humorous honesty. And I have to say as you posted your weights there were some “hefty” items there that had me silently screaming at the TV. But your reasonably light total astounded me. And if you forgot your food that coukd really be your true trail weight. Lol. Nicely done.
Did you actually say the ‘C’ word in and about the outdoors? Cotton cover!!!?? Is cotton permitted anywhere outdoors besides trips from your car to the mall? Let alone on a drool soaked pillow! 😉😮😮😮
The Nemo Tensor EC, I'm a cold sleeper and I actually sweat on a low 50's night. Just wish I could sleep on it, the horizontal baffles are very uncomfortable to me. Guess I'll try to sell it online and recoup some of the money it cost. $$$!
I love Devin’s review of the Kilos Gear Elite pad. I think that is the one that will replace my old BA Q-Core Deluxe pads. Great price, great weight, love the depth, and that R value(!!!), yes!
I have the Nemo Tensot R4.2. Your comment about its warmth makes sooo much sense. I have used it in relatively mild temps (45F) low and been chilly. Had to put an extra 1/4" pad underneath. Makes me doubt the R rating just like quilt and bag "comfort" ratings.
Great vid, I'd buy the Kilos Gear UL if I didn't already have the nearest competition in every way, the Naturehike R 5.8. In fact I'd like to see your Kilos Gear UL Vs Naturehike R 5.8 head to head. Love your vids.
@@ryanyu5051 I'm a big fat guy and I've found the R5.8 comfortable and I'm a side sleeper. The key for me was price, weight but mostly pack size and the Naturehike packs up really small. It is about 3" thick so not far off the Kilos Gear UL which I probably would of bought if it had been out when I got my R5.8
@@camping_guru_ukI have the same nature hike pad and am a side sleeper, not especially heavy human, and I bottom out on it. If it’s inflated to the point I don’t bottom out then it’s horribly uncomfortable. It may be I just need to dial it in a bit better, but so far it’s not been great. I do have chronic pain so a comfy pad is important. It’s definitely warm, I’ll give it that. I’ve looked at the kilos pad but I’ve yet to see many reviews that aren’t sponsored.
@@sophieisabelle3762 I definitely have it fully inflated and I have my own built in padding lol. I'm not saying it's as good as my mattress at home but I'm comfy enough on it. Again the Kilos Gear UL looks very good in all ways.
I have the Nemo Tensor EC in L/W and it gets very small. It's a hint bigger than the Zenbivy Flex which is a thinner pad. The EC goes very easily into it's sack, even with the pump sack rolled up with it. I was on the early adopter end of these, but I think I got it just after some concerns/complaints about the small stuff sack; mine is loose around my pad making it very easy to get in there. I agree with you that the 'waffle' style is more comfortable and as such the KILOSGEAR pads really have my attention. About those pump sacks... I kind of hate the small opening style; it sort of defeats one of the great advantages of a pump sack which is to eliminate any breath moisture being introduced which as we all know will contain bacteria and affect insulation. That aside, don't put it right up to your mouth. As you blow into it from about a foot away you'll notice that it'll draw air into the pad; you're really just creating a slight high pressure area at the top of the opening and this will cause a much higher volume of atmosphere to enter the sack than you can get from your lungs alone.
I can't believe none of them have some wind resistance build into them. Maybe you could cut a few air holes in there to allow the wind to pass through more easily. Thanks for the review. I am super intrigued by the Kilos Gear pads they look very comfortable.
