EVERYTHING just tastes better, and way purer, in glass! I drink from glass, cook w/ glass cookware, etc use wood utensils only. Seems like you can go back and reheat food, or take a drink a few hours later even, n it keeps it "fresh". So I agree, its worth the effort. Not only is Kathryn resourceful, but really cute, as well. Great tips. TY

The "plastic" in the coffee cups is actually some form of wax, I know because I am allergic to most if not all forms of wax, so when I get coffee from 7-11, Starbucks, ect i have an allergic reaction! (I am not allergic to coffee, I can drink the coffee from containers or coffee shops that use mugs)

I’ve never seen dispensable dry good bins in any regular chain store like WInn Dixie or Walmart. The only ones I know of are places like Fresh Market and other really expensive stores. But if this was a widespread, common thing to see I would absolutely do this. It’s the other items that are the issue: yogurt, frozen veggies, on the go snacks. Too bad there isn’t a way you could put those kinds of things directly into your own container. That would be a complete revolution for a grocery store to have every single item, whether fresh produce or even snacky junk food, available for purchase in that form. I imagine a giant store full of dispensers and bins. Could get super unsanitary. I don’t know. If we could just get all manufacturers to put their stuff in biodegradable containers combined with dry goods in dispensers that would eliminate a huge portion of the plastic. I’m guessing it’s more costly than just plastic. I’m on board but I also have a family and we don’t eat just dry goods and fresh produce. So for all the other things there’s still a pantry full of plastic but if I’m really thinking about it, lots of recyclable cardboard too.

@@donnaleeclubb119 thrift shop items don't count in the ... count. Like you said they are already made. But lots of people buy cheap clothes from places like Wal-Mart and when the item gets a blemish, tear or loses a button etc they get rid of it and get something new. And also I know some people chase trends so they get all new clothes every season because *gasp* they wore that old thing last year! I wear uniforms for work and school so there is precious little me time in which to care whether I wore this last season last decade. I just gotta get the shopping done and hit the gym.

I have turned into a jar-a-holic. I spray paint the tops of the lids (not underneath where the seal is) to personalize them, I dry-can my bulk dry foods like rice, beans, sugar, crackers, tortilla chips and lemon cookies. I especially love the giant pickle jars. Small jars are treasures too. 20-30 minutes in 200 degree oven, then tighten the lids afterwards and they will reseal most of the time, causing airtight bug proof food that is fresh as the day I bought it at Costco. Splitting up those huge bulk items into smaller portions retards binge eating in addition to preserving snacks.

I'm working on this. I wish I knew where to find a bulk food store. I absolutely abhor marketing, disposable packaging, and toxic chemicals and food additives. 😠. Oh, and I was also having trouble figuring out how to downsize my wardrobe --- you fixed it for me. It just clicked, I'm only keeping clothes I have that are made with natural fibers. Going to cut up some of the rest for rags, dish cloths, reusable "paper" towels, or cut to make blankets or curtains with. That made me happy! Ty

Plastic has such a major effect on our environment, from the fossil fuels used in it's production, the harmful chemicals released into the air during those processes until it eventually ends up in a landfill or the ocean. Even though I feel the companies should be held responsible and policed more, it is ultimately consumers that create demand. I want to help in any little way I can and these were some great places to start in reducing plastic in my life. I never even though about taking my own little produce bags, that's a great idea:)

Thank you finally a millennial that is actually doing something for the environment, rather than lecturing their parents about how righteous they are because they are voting to pay a guilt tax to globalists to save the world after they drive to Starbucks and buy coffee in a disposable cup. I do all of what you are doing and I grow a garden in a greenhouse that I built, and I milked free range goats and made my own cheese. And raised poultry for eggs and meat. I still end up buying feed in bags made of plastic. But they do recycle them. We only have to go to the dump like twice a year and most of our waste is recycled.

I do use plastic, but I don't abuse the privilege of having such a handy item. Pick the best product, use and reuse until it isn't possible to squeeze another use out of it. Use an alternative if there is one that will do as good a job and is within your budget. I grew up before Tupperware became a thing everyone had to have. It is possible to still have convenience and plastic without filling landfills for untold generations to come.
