The problem with English is that the written form has almost no relation to how it's pronounced, unlike a lot of other languages. So people learning English make the mistake of thinking words are spoken as they are written, and native English speakers are often unable to pronounce foreign words by just reading them, they need to hear them to learn how they are spoken.

RobertBlackford That is because they are using French spelling with semi-English pronunciation rules. In their own contexts, French has the more regular pronunciation.

English: a language in which - 1. you don't pronounce words the way they are written; 2. you don't write words the way they are pronounced; 3. you don't pronounce silent letters; 4. you pronounce absent letters; 5. every vowel is often pronounced as another vowel; and 6. many letters are often pronounced as other letters.

Actually there is no language where you pronounce evertything how it's written. Polish is quite easy with it, but we have things like "sz" "cz" "rz" "ch" which aren't pronounced "c-z" "s-z" "r-z" "c-h". Funniest thing? We pronounce "ch" same way as "h" (also "rz" like "ż") I believe nobody knows why we use "ch" or "h" if there is no difference between them in pronounciation, only ortography. For words to look more fancy on paper? Still I respect French most for inventng language with "eau" pronounced as "o". "Hey, man how we will call thaat liquid?" "Let's just write all vowels but one." "Done, but how we will sa it?" "Just like missing vowel.

Menkuna - I pronounce them (wors) all correctly too, and I'm from Scotland. (Amazing, eh?) I would add that I don't pronounce them all as she thinks they should be uttered. "Wensday" e.g. I would say "Wednsday" (as in Odin's day). Comfortable is just comfortable as it's written, and I have never heard people pronounce any of the other words mentioned wrong. You'll like this story as you're from Germany. - I met a dapper old gent from Germany about fifteen years ago and we had quite a long conversation in a hotel lounge, during which he told me he had been coming to Scotland on holiday every year for decades. He was telling me that his children (now adults) were also repeat visitors and enjoyed hiking in the Islands. So when I said my sister in law's people came from Harris, he looked puzzled and said "You say Harris, (hard A), So did I, but when I was taught English I was told to say Herris". I said "Of course, you were, because you were taught by an Englishman, they're best ignored where pronunciation is concerned". I went on to asked him why he began coming to Scotland. He said he was in the Luftwaffe and used to fly over Glasgow during the war. He told me that after they had completed the bomb run, they would fly out over the Clyde estuary and then make the home run from Loch Lomond. He said he was so impressed with the beauty of the landscape that he determined to visit after the war was over. I smiled at him and said "Do you know, It was even more beautiful before you flew over". He was such a nice old guy. They really were a different breed in these days, I don't know if I could have done it.
@Menkuna
@Menkuna 7 лет назад
I learned to speak Harris also like "Herris", it feels for me really strange to say it with a hard A (thats the thing thats mostly in my head after reading your comment. I could be prouder of myself.)
@schell0118
@schell0118 7 лет назад
Menkuna Oh I don't think pride has much to do with it. You just have to stop assuming that people are right in everything they say just because they were the first to say it. There are place names like Milngavie which are pronounced "Milgai', Greenwich pronounced "Grennich" etc. It isn't a lack of pride which causes me to feel normal about pronouncing them in a way which seems at odds with how they're spelled. Sometimes we just forget to ask questions. That's why we need the very young, they haven't learned not to ask obvious questions yet.

Like, all of them xD Though I can imagine it being difficult to imagine words, that are hard to learn for foreigners, when you've never had trouble pronouncing them yourself ^^ I think longer words with a tricky pronunciation would have made a better video for people, who already speak English a little but want to improve their pronunciation nontheless :)

I can tell about my experience in Brazil, my native country. Even in middle class schools, English has little importance and we are taught by non native English teachers, with either little knowledge in pronunciation, either not much care to reinforce it. If we really want to get past being only acquainted with the very basics, we have to take classes at language schools. Still, since we have mostly little to zero involvement with English on a daily basis, it gets to a point we all get to speak only a broken English between ourselves, during those language school classes. Thanks to videos like this, and other many resources on internet, we can now study, improve and practice our skills by ourselves.

The patient replies, "Read it? I KNOW him!"

I'm Juan The standard vision testing chart has a series of lines of letters starting with a huge E on the first line and becoming smaller and containing more letters towards the bottom. The letters do not form English words and are mostly not pronounceable to English speakers, so the idea that the 20 or so letters on the bottom line spell a Polish name is the punch line ("READ it? I KNOW him!").

Why is it that English words can't be spelled in the manner in which we speak them? You do realise the alphabet we use was originally created to be instruction on how the word is to be pronounced, don't you? Why does english have to be so wierd when it comes to spelling vs. pronunciation?
@3ADWOLF

English is a complex language. A simple example is there, their and they're. They are all pronounced the same by native English speakers but are used differently. Languages should be complex because we are intelligent beings, otherwise we would still be grunting lol.

+William Dwyer ( I have no clue how to pronounce your Surname the right way but i guess you have trouble to pronounce mine right as well ;) ) English is originally a Germanic language, so the grammar is pretty similar to German at least when it comes to how we structure our sentences. But the vocabulary is highly influenced by Romanian languages like Latin, Spain, French or Italian. It's typically for Romanian languages that the pronunciation is different from the spelling. P.S. Is it right to pronounce your Surname like wire with a D in front. I am just curious :)

@wirth6
@wirth6 7 лет назад
But a language being complex and expressive doesn't mean you can't have a one-to-one mapping between the sounds making up the spoken language and the letters making up the written language. It wouldn't make English less complex if fruit was written as froot, Wednesday as W(h)ensday, queue as que, vegetable as vegtable, chocolate as choclat, etc.
@3ADWOLF

wirth6 but changing/simplifying (American English) words that already exists a certain way just because it makes things "easier" is the unnecessary dumbing down of a language.

I came to the UK and couldn’t put a sentence in English together. After 1 year of living in the UK I realised I couldn’t say the ‘s’ at the end of ‘crisps’. 6 months after it just came out… that day I realised I’d probably speak and write English better than half of the native population. 3 years later, was proof reading essays in university for native friends, then at work in my student job, I was delegated to write letters of referrals to hospitals. Never considered myself a linguist but have managed to get far with it but, I attribute it to the emphasis to grammar in my schooling at my home country. I was shocked that many contemporaneous people of my generation born in Britain lack the foundation of grammar unfortunately. Not many people know what a noun, pronoun, adverb, adjective, phrasal verb mean 😢
