10 Expensive Guitar Picks 

If you drop any of these picks, try not to drop them on your toes.

Ive used these for years and as you get used to them you'll notice your picking hand cramping up way less than using thinner picks.

Honestly, I feel like many guitar players don't think enough about how much a pick changes the tone. Coming from someone who doubles on upright bass and guitar, if you compare guitars to classical strings, the pick is the equivalent to the bow. A bow can cost as much as a brand new Les Paul, sometimes even more, but they spend that kind of money because it changes the timbre. I wouldn't necessarily spend more than $10-$15 a piece on picks, but tbh if you're someone who can keep from losing them, I see no reason spending extra money on picks is any more rediculous than spending extra money on strings.

I can definitely vouch for using different picks for double tracking panned guitars. I've been doing that for years, I'll use a really heavy Petrucci flow pick on one side and a much thinner ultex sharp on the other side. It's a subtle difference but it really fills out the mix without getting unbalanced. The brass pick sounds killer, I love that little bit of cello attack!

I lose picks on a daily basis. Imagine losing these.

Very good demonstration, I have been making picks of various materials (copper, bone, old cymbals, antler etc etc )for a couple years now that I use and sell. Definitely the most use I find is in the studio to make a subtle difference in guitar tones, and sometimes it gives exactly what is needed in tone to cut through the mix. Though my everyday go to is Tortex, the tonal differences of different material picks is highly overlooked. Also, the non beveled edges on metal/copper brass etc is definitely one factor that drove me to start making my own.

I love to know that I'm not the only one obsessed with guitar picks. I've tried tons of guitar picks, from custom, to tortex, Jazz III, K.K. Downing's pick (given to me by him during a backstage) Kiko Loureiro's signature pick and I ended up settling on Petrucci's trinity pick. There is something about the feel, sound, shape and size of that pick that makes it very different to any other guitar picks that I've ever used.

My first guitar, in 2009, was a custom Hufschmid! I still have it to this day and I love it!

Those galalith picks sound N A S T Y with high gain... In a good way.

I'll stick with my fender heavy california series picks. They're see thru aqua blue. I like them.

I've been following Patrick Hufschmid for years now and his guitars are absolute perfection...never been into thick picks but I believe they are absolute perfection as well

Adamas picks are 2mm and made of graphite. Used by Jerry Garcia and are used by Trey Anastasio exclusively. The string response from them is great. If the edges get rough, you just rapidly slide them back and forth on low commercial carpet and the edges will be smoothed out. They are about $2.50 each but will last a very long time (I carry extras in my bag but the one that I keep in my pocket is 2 years old). Available from Amazon and I highly recommend them, if you don't mind the thickness of them.

Plectrums are a big part of your tone, definitely good to try different ones!

When I was learning how to play, I naturally experimented a LOT with picks and strings, trying just about everything on the market at the time. I settled on a string brand that I felt worked best for me (D'Addario XLs), and a pick that worked best for my playing styles (Fender medium, 451 shape). Yep... Fender Mediums. Except, I use the smaller version (451) of the ones most people use. Kinda like a jazz pick size but shaped like a 351. I have used the same strings and picks for 35+ years. You can keep all these boutique picks.

I make guitar picks out of old brass car wash tokens and swear by them. With metal picks you MUST bevel and polish them, it makes a HUGE difference in feel. When you do, they bite into the strings less and smoothly glide through the strings with ease, not to mention they tear up your strings less.

Bassist here, I normally use a Tortex 0.60. I just always feel for me, thin just gets me the tone I like. My favorite was the control Dunlop.

I've yet to try any Hufchmidt picks, but they are definitely on on my list. I've got quite a few from Iron Age Accessories and Plexstrum, and while I haven't gelled with all of them, there are some really cool designs out there. Plus this shit is just fun to collect. As if this hobby wasn't expensive enough 🙄

They're pleasing to the eye & will give Gravity & V-picks & run for the money,I guess its more of a shredding/injury thing,Im curious about longevity maybe you could keep us updated every what 10 years to see if some can last a lifetime

hey, have you tried the dunlop primetone 1.4mm jazz III? I like that one and the dunlop 3mm big stubby; find different pick sizes and thickness influence how I play and inspire me to play in different ways.

Noticing a lot of chirp on the Torlon in that opening lead segment with it. How has it been on chirping? It seems the denser materials do have a tendency toward more pick chirp on the high strings, particularly with sweep picking and high gain. I can mitigate it a bit with flattening my picking angle and adjusting the treble/mids down a bit but curious to hear more from others.

The most expensive picks I used to buy were 20p each. I used to buy slightly more expensive ones to start with, but when you live with a brother who plays guitar and doesn’t believe in buying picks, it soon adds up! I must admit that when I saw the title of this video I wondered if the picks I use might be in it, Dunlop Primetones, at £3 each... Haha! Nope.

@KDH Do u hear that noisy sound, that the pick does? Like the vibrating string that hits this big chunk of pick and makes this annoying sound. I own a Hufschmid pick myself and that sound it makes, is the only reason why i dont use it anymore.

I have 3 thick picks now. An Acrylic one, one made of Bone and the other one is Bakelite. The Acrylic is XL Jazz size, the others are standard Jazz size. I love the Bakelite one cause it slides like butter and my hand is way less tense... Kinda hard to do pinch harmonics tho... The ones I use for almost everything are the Acrylic 1A Model from Levi Valent Plectrum (should check them on FB or IG). It has 4 points to it. A "sharp round" one, a very round one, a very sharp one and a somewhat sharp one with very "wide" angle going to its tip. I normally use the sharpest one bruh... THAT SHIT HAS SOME SERIOUS ATTACK!!!! Love it for funk, djent and overall soloing. Sometimes I use the far back (the somewhat sharp) one on chord strumming cause it gives very nice overtones to them. Picks are so underrated.....

the brass jazz has me looking to buy now

Question about the Hufschmid picks. I love thick picks, I adore massive acrylic picks BUT with "ghost rim" and "master finish" from v-picks and gravity picks respectively. I am addicted to the Paul Gilbert/Brian May/Dave Mustaine scratchy but clear choppy rapid fire notes on riffs and makes sweep picking sound bigger. So if you get something mad like.... their 15mm Mega Anvil, it looks insanely smooth. Does that mean the lack of texture means it will be more glassy than percussive? Is it recommended to buy a pick like this and to use a certain grit of sandpaper to do your own "master ghost" texture? I just bought a V-Picks Psycho and that's just under 6mm. Super smooth so trying to figure out what these guys do to get that texture.... The Hufschmid picks look like they only get textures for grip....

I tried some more expensive picks, could never really jell with them, ended up going back to my Tortex TIIIs.

Check out some wegan picks they have different thicknesses as well and they sound great with a long wear

Interesting ideas. I’m not a high gain metal player at all. I play more blues/southern rock. I’ve never tried anything like these. I use what now seems like paper thin .73 and .88 mm textured picks. I may have to try something like this just for the hell of it.

I like gravity picks, the sunrise big mini 4mil is my favorite. Those thick picks just feel better, and seem to make me play better, can't really tell you why. That's why I usually keep one on me and have some jazz 3s as spares. I especially like the new black tortex with the convex

I know shits gone crazy when he say its ONLY 3mm. I struggled with 2mm and he uses the 10mm ones effortlessly. KDH you da pick man. Going to have have to play one now just to see how they feel. 80USD though..... hmm....

I am honestly surprised that there is a definite difference between any pick at all. I never would have guessed. I used to use the green tortex ones on bass back in the day. All finger style now baby! BASS! Also, are those 10mm thick picks actually easy to use? they look so bulky and hard to handle.

Why did that Torlon 4203 sound so much louder than everything else.

Ngl, the brass pick sounded like that extra scraping sound you get from doing alot of heavy palm-muted upstroke picking (like Dimebag). I need one of those now!!

Great video, I appreciate Patrick’s craftsmanship but I think they would be too thick for me. The size that I like it’s a jazz III, I tried something called Infinix that I got online because I wanted something that had a rubbery grip on it, and they do but their regular size picks, too wide for me. The gorilla snot works but it’s hard to keep it exactly where you want it on the pick. If anyone knows where I can get a Jazz III with a rubbery grip or knows where I could just buy the rubbery grip and put it on the Jazz III picks that I have now please let me know. Great video.

Can you play fast lines with the picks?

I use 50mm very thin picks, I wanna try something like this but I play low gain blues type stuff and I don’t really have the money to try if they’re not gonna work out....but I guess that’s everything in life

Hi I'm knew to guitar, been playing and having lessons for around 6 months and really enjoying it, I've been experimenting with all sorts of different picks to see what makes it easier and more comfortable to play, ive seen alot of RU-vid video with people using these types of picks, and just wondering if you would recommend any of these for a beginner player like myself or are they just for more advanced guitarist????
