I've ran boats with the Detroit Diesel V-6, V-8, and V-12 2 cycle engines. They are good engines that are now "outdated." The old cliché says..."if it ain't leakin'...it ain't runnin'.

If it isn't leaking , you'd better make sure it's got oil in it . I wrenched on those for 30 years .

That piece of plywood on top of the Detroit 8V71 was to put over the blower ( air inlet ) in case of overspeed . If you didn't know how to adjust the rack or buffer screw on those or an injector stuck in full fuel ( old style rack ) those would overspeed in a big way . They call that a 'runaway' because the operator runs away . I used to put vice grips on the rack tube for the unlikely chance that it would happen . I had a helper run the rack on a 6V53 Detroit and it screamed until I put a board over it . Inverted the blower seals . Dammit .

These are not "extreme big engines" they are just toys. I once worked in the test dept. of a diesel engine builder. The smallest engine built while I was there was 12,000 HP the largest 33,000 HP.

The Cat 3208 started out in trucks making about 210hp , this one at 4:00 is a 3208T marine engine , making about 320 hp . A common marine version that was highly reliable was turbocharged and aftercooled and made 375 hp . They went on to produce 3208s that made 435 and even 500 hp , but they weren't reliable and the design was outdated , so they went to 3116s and 3126s which were lighter . Cats that weren't pushed to the limits of their design are extremely reliable . The Northwestern , a boat on Deadliest Catch has a V12 Cat engine . It had better be reliable .
