Burger Chef was fantastic, way better than any other fast-food burger joint. Too bad Hardee’s destroyed them. We also had a Red Barn and Sizzler; I ate at them when I was in college. Their food was good and affordable.

We had a Red Barn restaurant here locally. It closed rather suddenly. My dad had read in the papers that it had been serving kangaroo meat! Early to mid 1960's.

Back in '74 I was living in Vegas. My cousin went to school with John Y. Brown! John was opening a new burger joint called Ollies Trolleys. (see Lums story). The burger was invented by a man in Miami Beach. It was the best burger I ever had!! It was marinated in 23 herbs & spices and cooked on both side at once for 3 minutes. We cooked it on the rare side so you don't burn the spices! I still make a burger I call the Mikey burger but I can't remember all the spices. But my family loves them! Also the fries had a spice package with 11 herbs& spices that you sprinkled on after the fryer.

We had an Ollie's Trolley here in Knoxville back in the 80s. Best hamburgers & fries we (wife & I) ever had. They had to move from downtown to the Strip (next to Univ of TN's campus). That didn't last long. On the way to Michigan one year we stopped at one in Cincinnati & it was just plain awful.

@@DennisGast In trying to save money owners would cut back on the spices and then it became just another burger.

Sizzler started as a casual dining place, with picnic tables and sawdust on the floor. As I recall, they had two steaks on the menu: a sirloin for $1.29 and a New York steak for $1.49. A very different dining experience from what it eventually became.

I actually remember a few happy memories of my mom taking my brother and me to Burger Chef when I was a little girl, about the early '70s or so, when my dad would go hunting in northern Michigan with his buddies. I've never forgotten the Burger Chef and Jeff slogan, either lol The other chains I never saw here in Michigan.

I remember eating at Red Barn when I was a kid in the ‘70s. My mom always liked their fried chicken, my dad always got the Barnbuster, and I usually flip-flopped between their fish sandwich and their fried chicken. We didn’t eat out a lot due to being poor, but when we did it was usually Red Barn. There was a Kentucky Fried Chicken in the town also, but it was a lot pricier than Red Barn.

I ate Sizzler for dinner tonight. However, dating back to 1958 the steaks were $.99 each with mixed green salads for $.25. The original in Culver City had a Monday night special of steaks at half price ($.49) each. The fourth rendition of the original is still around as it had to moved due the completion of the 405 San Diego Fwy. and development of the Fox Hills Mall (now Westfield’s Culver City shopping center. The Blue Cheese dressing has always been my personal favorite.

Sizzlers were good, but their restaurants here in the Greater Cincinnati area never honored credit cards! I'm sure that kept some business away. Burger Chef was one of my favorites when I lived in Louisville. I especially loved their works bar, where I could always put more ketchup and add another slice of cheese to my Top Chef burger. And, one slight correction, please. John Y. Brown, Jr. did buy Lum's in 1978, but he was not elected Governor of Kentucky until 1979. Good video, though, keep up the good work!

Pioneer Chicken stores in Southern California, just plainly SUX'd. I was employed with Dewey Pest Control in the early 80's. I had several of them on my route. We had to fill out a monthly State Health Inspection Report on these stores along with other food chains. Here are a few things that the stores got wrong, a. Excessive grease on the floors, walls, counters and grease traps in the kitchen. b. Rest rooms that mainly looked like a truck stop. c. The rodent and roach traps were constantly full. Flys were buzzing around in the summer months. d. Most kitchens prep counters were unsanitary and smelled awful. * Note after receiving a poor inspection, a D or F rating they shaped up and eventually got sloppy again back to a real greasy spoon.
