Imagine being an innovative video game developer or publisher who pioneered a trope or mechanic that would one day become commonplace. Now imagine that everyone forgot you were the team to come up with that thing in the first place. Well, the teams behind games like Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger and Jurassic Park: Trespasser don't have to imagine, so let's finally give them the kudos they deserve. Here are 10 Forgotten Video Game Firsts!

What about Journey being the first video game soundtrack to be nominated for a Grammy? This is bigger than being the first soundtrack to enter the billboard charts and to top the billboard charts

Karateka was hardly an "obscure student game". It was a huge selling game on the 8-bit computers of the early 80s and is very well remembered by classic gamers. That said, still a great video!
@MrJWTH

It even had an Asian exclusive Game Boy port titled Master Karateka which isn’t something they would have been done with an obscure foreigner language title.

@Trenchbroom My thoughts exactly. Went straight to the comment section to point that out, glad to see you already did that. Karateka gets a mention whenever most notable Commodore 64-games are discussed and seems pretty recognizable for anyone who dabbled in 8-bit gaming. It's still a good video nonetheless.

IDK- the original Legend of Zelda jumbled everything after you completed the game the first time. If you started a second play thru (or had just had the bright idea to enter your player name as 'Zelda' when you first started) you'd find everything in new locations, from items to dungeons. Might this qualify as a New Game +?
@Enkabard

i think new game plus is more about carrying over progress, rather than new layout of levels

It's crazy that Minecraft has the best RTX implementation right now. Full pathtracing is bananas. Amid Evil and Ghostrunner are pretty cool too, tho the new UE5 stuff is gonna be the catalyst imo for widespread stuff. Hopefully it helps 120hz+ framerates for everything cuz I love fluid framerates for everything over visuals. 2D games in particular look so good as high framerates, even if its just the camera that moves and the animations dont interpolate.

In relation to this week's "Worst Games Ever" video, the first two Tomb Raider games had DLC level packs (as in officially made by CORE and not fan-made TRLE levels) that were available as free downloads to people who owned the games on PC. They were popular enough that the third game got a set of levels released as a separate retail game on PC.

I'm not certain that was really the first DLC. The first downloadable DLC, maybe, but I'm pretty sure there were games before then that offered new content. Also, why was there no mention of Alien Resurrection being the first to use the now standard FPS console control scheme? Also, you mention Halo 2...for the soundtrack. While that's interesting, I believe it was also the first game to feature the now standard party system for matchmaking.

The first successful video game based on a failed movie could be Krull. People were playing this a lot even though they hated the movie. Fun Side Fact: Who was the first internationally known bodybuilder to appear on a pinball machine? Most people would say Arnold Schwatzenagger in 1991's Terminator 2: Judgement Day. But it was actually Rachel McLish who appeared in the 1986 Hard Body.

The entry for first DLC is very much wrong. Doom came out 4 years earlier and was fully modable by players with downloadable WAD files that could range anywhere from swapping out a sound effect or enemy all the way up to total conversion mods that replaced all the levels enemies weapons sounds and even textures. 2 years before Doom we had ZZT which is largely forgotten today but was designed to all for players to be able to make and download level packs for it. Sounds and graphics not so much. It is also notable as being the first game from Epic before the company was called Epic Megagames. There were other earlier games that let you edit levels and such but they saved those edited levels as part of the other files for the game if they let you save them at all. I believe ZZT may have been the first game designed and released with downloadable mods that players could use. On the other hand there were games that ran on BBSes and those started adding support for mods being installed by the system operator so that all the people who connected to that BBS could play the game with the mods. Trade Wars 2002 (released in 1986) had a map editor and at least one official expansion that could be installed but I'm not certain when those features were included because the game kept getting updated. Legend Of the Red Dragon came out in 1989 and over the years had a MASSIVE amount of expansions developed for it that could be installed for players to access. So I'm not certain which game exactly should count as the first game with DLC but clearly it happened MUCH earlier than 1997.

Don't forget Wolfenstein 3D (and then Doom after it) was originally going to be released as Freeware for the first three levels and then the subsequent 6 levels were going to be sold in two 3 level packs. It's still evident in the level selection menu and in some of the post game screens advertising.

Your definitions of motion capture and rotoscoping are a little confused. They are both very different techniques. Disney used rotoscoping to create various characters in their films, but this is a far cry from the mocap suits with markers that record real-time data for productions like Uncharted or The Lord of the Rings. Karateka and Prince of Persia were not mocapped - video was used as a reference for rotoscoping. One of the earliest games that used proper mocap technology was Goldeneye way back in 1996/97.

Another first: Civilization 4 becoming the first videogame to be nominated and actually won a Grammy award. The only video game to achieve both of those feats. @newageBoundhippie
@newageBoundhippie 3 года назад
that's pretty cool...but man I wish more games got that kind of recognition. Journey & Civ aren't my cup of tea...but the music from the Xenoblade Chronicles series, EarthBound, Chrono Trigger, Giftpia, Golden Sun, F-Zero X, Ratchet & Clank, Halo 2, Super Metroid...so much incredible music overlooked by far too many because they're video game soundtracks. Personally I'd rather listen to the Super Mario 64 soundtrack than anything on the Billboard charts any day

@@joser1853 the mere use of "beyond video game music/compositions" to make your point implies you think other video game music is somehow less than or inferior music, which is where my issue lies. YOU might feel that way about that piece but your specific wording comes off kind of pretentious...and that kind of thinking is why I've grown to hate awards more & more over the years, people put things into specific boxes and look down on what doesn't fit into them.
