If you have visions of just walking out along the Jurassic Coast fossil hunting and finding a calcite ammonite just like the one in the video - your sadly mistaken . Finding a calcite ammonite like the one in the video called Asteroceras obtusum , the king of calcite ammonites, is not easy at all ! See the video "10 fossil hunting mistakes" to learn more about the fossil collecting along the Jurassic Coast. As long as you don`t dig in the cliffs in situ, your allowed to collect the fossils that wash out along the shoreline. There is fossil collecting code of conduct online you can see called the " West Dorset Fossil Hunting Code Of Conduct."I hope you find some fossils along the Jurassic Coast-at low tide.Have a look at some of the fossils you can find along the Jurassic Coast in this video.The best tools are your eyes when finding fossils. I recommend wearing safety glasses and sturdy rubber gloves when hammering the right rocks. Remember the cliffs are dangerous and liable to fall suddenly and without warning. Keep away from the dangerous cliffs. The best fossils are washed out onto the beaches at low tide, by the sea's actions. Look out for the slippery seaweed on the ledges and rocks. I offer fossil walks along the Jurassic Coast on the following website, so feel free to take a look at the website I made, with our online fossil walks ------www.lymeregisfossilwalks.com #fossilhunting#ammonite#fossil.

Ive seen most of what you described in Lyme this week. Rock throwing is quite popular and looks like the start of a casualty episode. So many people sat on the rocks that have fallen from directly above, another start of a casualty episode. The ones with hammers are randomly smashing any rock will ensure you will have none left and have a full sandy beach in years to come lol. You need more people to see your excellent videos to get clued up. 👍⚒

Thanks very much , for your well written comment . The real concern as you pointed out , is people sitting right near the dangerous cliffs that are liable to fall suddenly and without warning. I think the hot spell of weather will have produced a lot of cracks in the cliffs . With rain in the future getting into the cliffs there are going to be a lot more falls , and more rock on the beach .

I have dabbled a couple times. And really enjoyed Highcliffe on the south coast for finding shark teeth - the beach is a sieve and focusing on little black triangles poking up was rewarding. I found Isle of Wight baffling, with such a huge variety of possible fossil types in various materials. Didn’t have any luck in the majority. But eventually a quiet spot with low fallen rocks and beach washed stones that , again not sure what to look for, but the soft crumbly rocks gave handfuls of soft ammonites. The give away was a huge impression of one that had gone, but the A4 sized stone had plenty of small ones for a beginner like me to find. Felt weird splitting rocks on any beach until the last day plucked up the courage, having the quiet and the higher potential in what I found. It seems hard to find good advice specific to the area you want. Some videos make it look easy. Definitely all good tips there tho. Although suspect rock types differ greatly.

A very helpful and useful video, good suggestion with the hat, liberal sun tun lotion too come in handy.
@LymeRegisFossils
@LymeRegisFossils 2 года назад
Thanks 🙏 very much Mike . Sun tan lotion is needed , people tend to burn the back of their neck a lot who don’t wear a big enough hat . Also during the Summer a lot of people come back into town a lobster red colour from sunburn 🥵. Factor 50 sun tan lotion is needed I would think, if your staying out long on the beach especially in this heatwave . Some days a cool sea breeze can really disguise the fact the sun is on you burning you . A lot of people are in the high street from the Sandy beach after a hot day at Lyme Regis . They come into town to buy after sun burn skin care.

I saw a giant ammonite today in a big rock. We took an image instead. I found little bits on the beach after the fossils gone. I was happy with that. Next time I come down I'm gonna come a learn more.

That’s great to get a good photo of the ammonite specimen. Sometimes the sea 🌊 covers them up with shingle and you don’t see them again for ages 🙌

I guess I'm a bit lucky then. While my fossils aren't museum quality they are whole brachiopods from around 300 million years ago. I was collecting rocks and yep, they were just sitting there. I find them now and then in my garden in nsw Australia. Maybe one day I'll find a museum quality piece. Fascinating stuff. 💖

Is there a difference in limestone? I live in Texas and there's mostly limestone. When we move a trough, the cattle naturally churn up the ground. Pretty soon it's easy to see the difference between random jagged rocks and smooth. The smooth have about 6 basic shapes but the sizes vary greatly, it's amazing to see the exact shape between limestone rock from the size of my thumb to the size of my foot. Some are obviously bivalve of some kind. I don't know if these are fossils or cast but it's limestone. I've found buckets of different gastropods, assorted clam shell.

@LymeRegisFossils 6 месяцев назад
That sounds like you’re finding some interesting finds, where you are for doing some looking . There are different types of limestone rocks 🪨. We even find Carboniferous limestone rocks as well along our beaches. They were put down as sea defences initially, and then were drifted along the coast by big seas !

I remember when I was young on the Dorset coast fossil collecting. I always thought I’d see a totally whole Ichthyosaur just sitting waiting for me in an area where the earth had just moved . That hasn’t happened yet, but I always hope

10 mistakes in this fossil video, like not knowing the tide times. I’ve had to guide people off the beach when they haven’t understood about the big tides that trap you on the beach in places. I’ve also had to dig people out of the mudslides when the incoming tide has pushed them too near the mud slips and dangerous cliffs !
