I follow a few interior RU-vid accounts. I really appreciate that you don't just jump on this week's bandwagon so I know when your notification comes it's not the latest "what's new at..." I'm going to receive some genuine, sustainable and long lived advice. I definitely agree with the declutter and using the items you genuinely love rather than some mass produced off the shelf thing you hate after a while.

I grew up with my grandparents and aunties and they practiced all the things you suggested today: the swapping decor, the rotating accessories, rugs and curtains, the collecting art from all the cousins and displaying them on the walls, getting cuttings from plants so we could all have them... Your video today brought back some great memories from my home country and has given me loads of inspiration to keep on making my house feel more special. Thank you.

Garrett I FINALLY thought of a great FREE idea. Keep all the heavy clear plastic jars that Costco Mixed Nuts, etc come in. It should have a strong screw on lid. Clean, remove label, put a cute decorative label on it and use for dry goods in your pantry or cabinets. Keep rice, beans etc fresh and organized

Thank you for mentioning showing off your photos and family memories and kids art! One of the bigger RU-vid designers mentions not putting out personal photos etc in public rooms because it makes visitors uncomfortable to see your wedding photos etc. We aren't all millionaires entertaining strangers in our vast mansions. I think it's wonderful to see another side of a friend when I visit their house.

Use leftover paint to paint a vase or lamp base. Use leftover wallpaper in the back of a bookcase, or inside a cabinet. Take the dust jackets off books for a more muted look, or wrap them in other types of paper.

I inherited some antique table linens that I am afraid to use for everyday, but hate hiding them in a drawer. I also inherited a few covered cake plates which are a pain to store. So I carefully folded the lines to look like decorated cakes and put them on display in the cake plates. Love the dog! Thank you for posting.

Have gotten into the habit of keeping a small donation box/ bag; adding to it as I go thru things or just find something in my normal decor which no longer suits.....WITHOUT exception, every time I go to drop off the box/bag at my nearby thrift store, there is ALWAYS something new (to me) and fabulous to bring home....it's like some kind of cosmic law--giving stuff away which we no longer love or use always seems to bring new and wonderful stuff our way! LOL I've an aversion to clutter, so this practice allows for changes/upgrades, etc., without adding more things to our storage room. As always, LOVE your content, Garrett.....it is REFRESHING how you NEVER begin your videos telling us what's new at Home Goods, Ikea, etc. As a DIY'er, I much prefer thrifting a high-end, well-made piece in need of a refresh, rather than spending hilarious amounts of $$ at mainstream places like Target, etc. No offense to those who decorate from those stores, but (for me) why buy average when I can get heirloom quality for pennies on the dollar? The creativity/ elbow grease to refurb or restore these great pieces is free! LOL And it's wonderful how YOU don't spend half of your videos showing us the "latest and greatest' from Amazon or CB2----YAWN....LOL You're truly the Best of The Best in this genre....am always happy to see a new Garrett LeChic video gracing my inbox. :)

When we used to have a living room, every six months we moved things into winter and summer modes. Really fun. What we have coming up soon though, is we're flipping two entire rooms. The office to the bedroom. Bedroom to the office. Excited to see how that goes! And it's FREE! Cheers, Ivy.

I love this video! So many great ideas, thank you. I will definitely take my rugs out next summer and have them cleaned. So simple and I never thought of it. One free thing I've done came about accidentally. I had a friend over for dinner and while we were sipping wine on the sofa she suggested a few changes, including moving furniture from other rooms. They were changes I would never have thought of on my own and it made a massive difference. Now when I'm wanting to do something to a room I invite a few friends over and we workshop possible changes. They always point out things I wouldn't see on my own. Friends are a great resource!

When I get my areas exactly as I love them, I change nothing - ever! It doesn't matter the season, when I get it right, its staying exactly as it is. Of course there are always areas that I've not quite perfected yet but they only change as I find the perfect piece regardless of the season. That said, I've had a lot of decades to get it right, and I only buy if its right.

Fab ideas. Thank you for opening up the possibilities. So for me, not free.. but pennies to re-do. Redecorating guest bathroom. Used black mat spray paint to change all accents to black: hand towel basket, legs of old marble top plant stand, outlet plates, unfinished ugly wood shelf under mirror, white porcelain wall decor. Amazing lift.

Great tips, Garrett! Repurposing items also helps particularly with storage. A luxury candle that has been burned out can be reused as a Q tip holder or mini vase, gift packaging can be used as drawer liners & a hamper box can be reused as linen storage.

I joined recently and I’m hooked. Been binge watching and love your advice. I have moved to a new house every 5-7 years of my adult life which was when I would weed things out. Now retired I have had this great home for 12 years and it needs a big decluttering. I keep it very tidy and have it professionally cleaned, just collected too many beautiful things. This video particularly was motivational. Trying right now to redecorate/repurpose/remove (things from) the living room. You have given me food for thought. Thank you Garrett!

For me, one of the things I have done is just... display the things I already own. This sounds so basic, but so many of us have things tucked away in cupboards and closets that are actually quite beautiful, similar to your advice about bringing out antiques. I have a straw hat with a colored band that I don't really wear anymore, but I have it sitting as part of a vignette on a bookshelf - which I also have some other pieces which are technically merch for a band I love but I've displayed in a way that they look like coffee table books and decorative boxes. On an end table in the living room I have an old jewelry box that was my mom's that I keep some other odds and ends in. I have a home office set up in my (largeish) apartment living room and the chair I bought for it is comfortable but ugly, so I often keep my denim jacket "casually" covering up the back of it, because it hides the ugly office look while styling it to fit in with the overall look of the space I have. The other advice that I know you've mentioned before that is similar but not quite the same as some of the tips you gave, is to repurpose pieces you own for functions they weren't originally intended for. If you have a dresser you're not wanting in your bedroom/spare room anymore, use it as a console table in the hall or living room. A nightstand can be an end table or also a small table at the door. Take an old dining room set and rather than getting rid of it create a dedicated games or crafting station in your basement for your family. An accent chair you're tired of in your living room might fit great in a corner of your bedroom, etc.

Hi Garrett, Cornelius is so beautiful! I like your advices, there are really sustainable. As for a free decor ideas, I occasionally received pieces of fabrics that one studio decluttered and made tablecloths for my dining room. Not always these tablecloths were outstanding because of my poor sewing abilities, but it was free and refreshing. Once, after my daughter finished to play with coloured water-absorbing gel balls, I filled them into 3 different transparent glass bottles and displayed as some sort of "scientific" decor (bottles were resembling laboratory flasks with misterious colored objects inside). Once after ceramics making class I replaced all the soap dishes with the small excentric pieces that were generated during the classes.

I subscribed recently and love the marketplace tip. I’m a grad student in my first apartment and it’s been great having my interior design style mature and evolve with me. It’s a new favorite hobby of mine. Most of my apartment is made up of pieces I’ve gotten from Facebook marketplace either for free or dirt cheap. A lot of these pieces are antiques that add more character than a new piece would have while also being way more affordable.

Great video as always, Garrett. I love your ideas. As well as getting the kids to create artwork, I found when my son was a kid, he thought it was a great privilege to be allowed to help me paint the walls. The neighbours' kids also asked to join in! I had protected the carpet with drop cloths, and the kids did a great job. When my son was a bit older he asked to replace a doorknob. It was not much more difficult than building something out of LEGO and so satisfying to know he was responsible for this thing he used every day. One thing that's important to note about picking wildflowers is that there are a few that should not be picked. Here in Ontario, our provincial flower, the white trillium is a beautiful but slow-growing perennial. Each spring, each plant sends up one stem with three leaves, and after years will also have one flower. Some people attempt to use them in flower arrangements but to get a long enough stem they end up cutting it off close to the ground, basically killing the plant.

I move lamps around a lot, because changing the lighting makes everything look different in the evening. Also, if you have plants that are big and full, you can sometimes take clippings off of your own plants and start them in a vase with water, to repot later after they catch on. And if you are REALLY creative, and you have old artwork that you aren't that wild about, break out your extra paints and alter the artwork. Even painting black around the edges of an unframed canvas makes it look more dramatic.

Love all your ideas. I change accessory decor seasonally. I keep a large collection of faux flowers, plants, stems and branches and arrange them differently in different containers for a refresh in my rooms, all faux because the cat only jumps up on the dining room table or a cabinet when he smells fresh flowers, so frustrating but we love our animals, so a small sacrifice (sort of). The one thing I want to do, in this new larger home, something I've thought about for a long time is to use a dining room hutch or cabinet with glass on top to use in the bedroom instead of a dresser. There are so many good buys out there in marketplace where people are getting rid of them. Would look so cool to store pretty linen, mixed with a collectable few pieces of china. The cupboard that held dishes, I can stack folded sweaters and jeans. The silverware drawer, ideal for jewelry or what have you.

Rotating, changing with the seasons, using family pieces, and especially using my books are all things I love doing. Never thought of lightening up the space by taking up the rugs. I may try that in my dining room and let the hardwood floor shine. The cats have thrown up on it enough that it could probably stand being cleaned. Liked all of the ideas.

I appreciate that you mention free sources. Yes, a lot of it is junk but I let that go to someone else. But I follow several places where free stuff is posted and gotten some really great stuff. I know the last time I moved, once the truck and my car were full, I put everything else out for free and lots of other people do that too. End of the month at apartment complexes is a great place to 'shop'. I don't take home stuff that's broken, dirty, or 'cheap' but I did once find an oil painting that turned out to be by an artist selling in the low thousands. Turned that around for a rug I wanted.

Excellent ideas! I loved the idea you shared in a different video a while ago about putting silver pieces out in summer and having them nicely polished but then allowing them to tarnish for fall and winter to bring a little more warmth into the house in the colder months. The change of the silver adds a different feel throughout the year.

Thanks so much! Yes the colors from the tarnish on silver pieces can add warmth and rich colors for the fall and winter seasons.

The rug tip is so true! I have a beautiful handwoven Turkish rug I got when I was traveling around the middle east. It's HUGE and super intricate but I realized my current furniture is way too bulky to have something so busy underneath, not to mention the rug can't get the appreciation it deserves.

Love this video! Last week we rearranged a bunch of stuff and ended up putting a large armoire in the home office area. We were able to put the printer/scanner inside the armoire so now that bulky utilitarian item is hidden inside something lovely. It makes the space look so much nicer. Or as Garrett might say, it *elevates the space.* Thanks for the inspo!

Great ideas and I love sustainable aspect of it. I feel like I say that every time, but it is truly one of the things I value about your channel. One freebie I’ve done: when I move to a new house I take something from my old house and use it. I found an amazing glass-fronted attorney’s bookcase at the first house I bought on my own and it is now in my office, and also found some antique iron sock forms (not sure what they are actually called) that I have hanging up as decorations in my laundry room. Before I put my last house on the market, I took off the old brass sheeps-head door knocker and the cut glass globes and pulls from the ceiling fan (and replaced them with generic ones) and now both are up at my new house. Those things make me feel connected to previous houses that I’ve loved.

Garrett always gets it right the first time! Houseplants can hide electrical cords/plugs as you do not shock yourself while watering. Use faux plants in a pot that matches your wall! Limit the colors in your rooms to reduce visual color worked for me, too! It's a ratio of balance. I try to think of the 5 senses in the room, also. Yep, including sound, scent, tastes (lemon tea bread!) Touch as well as sight. Its more homey if it pleases all your senses to me.

All of your ideas are spot-on. I love what you said about getting kids involved in decorating. Just today I asked my daughter to make a painting for the living room in our new house. She was so proud when I framed it and hung it on the wall. I also love the idea of framing vintage family photos and mixing heirlooms into the decor-- I do that too, and it has made my space more meaningful. My favorite idea is bringing in floral cuttings from outdoors. My peonies are about to bloom and I cannot wait to make a bouquet.

Thank you. Great tips. By not buying new its good for the enviourment . Plus finding stuff in thrift stores or family hand me downs means its something only you have . As an artist I rotate my paintings so something new to look at. Actually I keep one wall empty of any paintings so something clean white to look at and relax. Like the concept of japanese zen . Simple flower arrangements like ikebana dont require lots of flowers and make use of natural materials nature gives us free. I love the concept of leaving floors without carpets ( in warm countries) especially for people with allergies. Unfortunately doctors cannot visit their patients homes to help diagionize the root of health problems. Closed rooms with no cross ventalation along with chemical cleaning sprays and cooking smells all contribute to sick homes. Smells are the first things we encounter when entering any home. (Something to note lillies should never be kept in rooms as it sends out chemicals causing headaches drousiness etc. ). Ofcourse we cannot live in a space without our "things" . By nature we are all collectors . A beautiful view , garden definately adds to the beauty of a home.

I’m an interior designer as well and love watching your videos. You have a great approach for sharing real design ideas for real people. Most of my clients are just that and I have a passion for showing them how to create beautiful spaces that look fabulous but still stick to their budget. It’s always so rewarding to see their reaction to the final reveal. I am a relatively new subscriber but will definitely be a faithful viewer from now on! Thank you for sharing so many of your great design secrets. Love, love.

I love the video. I remember how my mum and all my siblings used to do change things around, it was like to have a new house. I loved it. A friend said to me "why do you have to move things around? In my house I put things in place and live them there" I told her, I don't have to but I like to do it.

I’m a new subscriber. I love how your advice is all very sustainable and lasting. And it makes sense. A lot of RU-vidrs in this space focus on how to make it look like the magazine instead of admitting we live in homes and it also needs to be practical.

Thank you! When so many others are saying “buy” here you are giving great practical advice that doesn’t cost a thing! I have a debilitating illness now…I only go out to the doctor or hospital so changing up my environment really helps. A few we already do but several I’ve never thought about so they can be added to keep things fresh. Never underestimate the positive power of change in your environment to help keep you mentally healthy, especially if you’re there all the time. I just love how your shirt coordinates with your artwork btw. 💖

I am not even ashamed to say I decorate with yard trash. Hear me out. I live in Florida and after rain and wind storms there are often beautiful oak branches laying on the sidewalk, or lovely stems from my neighbor's eucalyptus trees lying in the street. And those palm fronds people pay for? Honey they're on the curb every Tuesday morning. Mix in some dried florals and I have beautiful arrangements for basically free.
