You figured out what I meant. I tried to keep people out of the grove by hiding the primitive society unofficial trail with tree branches. The state posted “ stay on trail “ signs which really marked the trail. The grove was so hidden very few people knew where it was. Professor Steven Stillett and his friend discovered the grove. Steven is a professor of trees at Humbolt State University. He shoots fishing line attached to climbing rope up into the trees and then climbs the trees to nes fire them and study them. He discovered Hyperion which is off limits and stands kinda alone down by Orick California. Jedediah Smith State and National Park is what you want. There’s a campground.

Ice Plants is what those succulents are called. In 1980, my wife and I applied to be caretakers of that Battery Point light house museum, and were conditionally accepted, but when we told them my wife was pregnant, we were turned down BECAUSE at high tide you can't walk to shore. As caretakers, you reside on the rock. Ironically, the hospital WAS right down the block at the time. We ended up only living in Crescent City for a few months, and we loved it. I built a landsailer and would sail up and down the big, wide beaches - on the beach (3-wheeled cart). It was summer, 110 inland, and 55 deg. in CC. We had our down jackets on and shorts. At the beach, we'd see people just come into town, in shorts and T-shirts, and think they were crazy. After a few minutes, I think they were off to get more clothes. But just a few minutes drive east out of town, you'd be smokin' hot and jumping in the river to chill. Lots of fun. John, California

Wow that was such a beautiful and interesting video Love the ferns - those giantic trees - Cheri driving thru the trees. Like the way they explained about the tsunami - very interesting. Oh and the Jurassic sounds were pretty cool. Another great video - good job 👍😊

More population would ruin the beauty. It's one of the last great places left in California.

When I was a kid, someone got the hare brained idea of turning the old lighthouse into a spook house for Halloween. It was extremely dark, fortunately none of us went off the side, near the end kids were wading through ocean water to get out. Fun memories

They filmed some of jurassic Park in fern canyon and return of the jedi in jed smith state park. They moved that tripod from its original spot. The tidal wave moved it off its original foundation. Do not go out on the jetti. I used to fish off the jetti till i got hit by a sneaker wave. It almost pulled me back into the ocean. Luckily i was hanging onto a rock or i would of went in. Cc can be a pretty place but no work.

The sneaker wave situation sounds pretty intense, glad you made it out alive. The jetty is pretty cool and there was a lot of signs stating that we should not go out there but there were a bunch of people already out there walking around so we went out as well. Prolly best to heed the warning signs. Visit the lighthouse instead.

@@RollingwiththeRoss I’m a Jambalaya freak who has consumed a lot in New Orleans and Baton Rouge. It’s the real deal in Crescent City. Covid lock down started 3 days after Michael and Jennifer opened. They could only sell take out. I support them. The Chart House in the same parking lot has good fish and chips. At Sea Quake I get the fish tacos. Wicked Aunt Tammy is a good micro beer at 9.4 %. Wicked Aunt Tammy herself is a trip. Crescent City has new pavement on the street going to Sea Quake.

You were in Crescent City and did not drive to Jedediah Smith Park. You missed the best part of the area. Across the highway from Trees of Mystery is Hidden Beach trail.

@@RollingwiththeRoss ok brother. Your vehicle will not fit on Howland Hill Road but you can drive to the yellow gate and bicycle the 8 mile road. The Grove of Titans is the premier destination on Mill Creek trail. The state gave up trying to keep people out of the grove so they re- built the trail during covid. 25 minute hike from your car door to the grove. 4 of the top 5 biggest coastal redwoods in the world. Hyperion w372 feet tall 40 miles south of Crescent City. The four Titans are very large in diameter and over 300 ft. tall. I used to hide the “ society” trail with branches in an effort to keep people . The trees were a secret for 15 years until an arborist published the longitudinal and latitudinal location. The rangers don’t like the man. I used to sit in the grove for 1 hour in total silence and saw no one. Now it’s a tourist stop.
