I just found your channel, very good tips! I like how your ch is aimed at young adults after high school or college? Divorce? I have lived alone for almost 40 years and agree with your ideas! I found a temp job and an apartment 40 year later I am still at both the job and apartment!
I HEAR THAT!…… I am debt free, my home is my sanctuary. I am retired, live alone, nutrition mindful and love your channel. You have inspired me in so many ways. I raised 4 children as a single working mom with no other support, so I can truly appreciate my season of life and realize the benefits of frugal living. Have a wonderful holiday. And yes, “hamper” is a universal word.
I confess to being a book-buyer. Last Christmas my son challenged me to read the books I already own. So I went through my shelves and made a list of 6 fiction, 6 non-fiction that I haven’t read, with the goal of reading one per month. I kept with it, and as of today (12/15) I’m halfway through book #12! (I did buy maybe 2 new books over the 12 months, but that’s a LOT less than usual.) I’m so proud of myself, I’ve already gone through my collection and picked out 12 for 2024. Yay!
I hardly ever buy new books even though I am a bookaholic (read 102 books this year) I borrow from the library, buy nearly new from charity/thrift shops and swop with friends - Buy new only if I have as a present or with a gift voucher
I hear that! The older I get the more I enjoy being home cooking, growing my vegetables and watching movies. I do my pantry inventory 2xs a month to not over buy. Great advice as always.
Prioritize!!!!!!! That is Hope from Under the Median's favorite word! I can almost see the fairy dust from her channel hitting that painting behind you!!!!!!! It is about choices and knowing what we are aiming for.
I hear that! Keeping a cozy house (only 700 sq. ft.) gets easier all the time expecially as I decutter a little bit each day. Toss, donate, sell. Works for me.
Kate! Guess what!? I've been in the PSLF (public service loan forgiveness) plan that requires A DECADE of teaching at my non-profit school and yesterday my student loans were forgiven! I'm so excited and wanted to tell you. That debt is gone and non-taxable so it won't come back to haunt me at tax time. Thanks for the book suggestion, just requested it from my local library. I'M IN!!!
I love TV too Kate. It’s well worth the money for me. I love a good Netflix guilty pleasure - no apologies! I’m pretty sure a lot of the people who turn their noses up at TV spend hours a day on TikTok or Instagram. To each his own. I use paper towels also. I have cats and dogs and there is just no way to handle the messes effectively without them. No apologies there either. I want to do book club.
At age 80 and a widow on SS, most of my budget items are fixed costs. The only item that is variable is groceries Still, I enjoy your posts...keep 'em coming.😊
I keep a wide ribbon on my closet rod that divides my already worn but still clean/wearable clothes separate from my freshly laundered clothing. I hang clothing there even if the freshest version (jeans, etc. are stored in a drawer). Those clothes tend to work as a kind of capsule wardrobe for a week or so, (though I didn't plan it that way) which works for me.
At 57. I agree. I have been doing this since 2018. It's strange but addictive. I think my kids think..... Umm are you dying or sick. No, just tired of stuff.
We got the frugal thing under control, we got our budget in check, we have a savings and we have no debt. We really need to get back to our priority list and do one of the big (semi-expensive) home improvements.
We say laundry basket. I totally agree, Kate, about not just throwing clothes in the laundry basket if they're not dirty, because sometimes when you're tired it's an easier option than putting the item away. My 12 year old is now getting quite good at checking hoodies or tracksuit jackets to see if they can be worn again. Less expense washing less, less work doing the laundry and better for the environment.
I hear that!My husband and I are retired and home is our favorite place to be. We spent 10 years building our retirement home, a log cabin, and now we are enjoying our dream. We are debt free also.
I hear that. We definitely enjoy being at home and relaxing. We don’t constantly like being go go go especially in the winter. My daughter and I prefer eating at home versus eating out so that definitely helps the budget a little. I’ve definitely cut down on my overbooking myself and overcommitting to things I don’t really want to do.
Kate your the best! Literally just talked to my therapist about being able to enjoy being at home and not always rushing around but enjoy when I'm home
I hear that! 🥰 I’ve just started my winter break and I don’t want to go anywhere. I also need to refine my eating, as well. I’ve been negligent with my nutrition.
All about trying to use paper products!!! We started that during Covid with the lack of availably. I use our kitchen towels for as much as I can for drying hands/cleaning in the kitchen. We used up the paper plates/silverware that we had in the house and hadn't gotten more (except for when our dishwasher was on the fritz!). Oh, and we have cloth napkins now, love them so much better!
YES 👋FREAKING 👋 MA'AM about the TV thing. Like, great if you don't like TV, but this whole holier than thou "I don't watch TV" thing grinds my gears. My daughter and I LOVE watching TV on Netflix, Hulu, Prime, etc. It's one of the ways we bond. There is NOTHING wrong with enjoying TV and shows.
To add, I have tried to make our apartment our sanctuary and it's worked. She loves being here with me and loves to be home because it's her safe space (her dad and I are divorced). We love, love being home.
I LOVE that book! It's changed the way I think about scheduling/time-blocking. I'm so happy that book club is coming back, Kate. Another great video! You keep me on the right path, so I'm really happy still to be here every Friday, focusing on the best use of my money. Have a wonderful weekend, humans and felines alike! 🙂
When looking at income, earnings or budget and spending, please be very Sure you are always looking at After Tax Dollars. If you don’t factor in taxes you may have a unexpected bill when income tax time comes around.
Home is our sanctuary, too!We enjoy watching tv and (shock of all shock) don't mind paying for cable. We watch hockey, movies, HGTV, etc. We get our money's worth. No streaming for us.
OMG! I thought I loved you before BUT Girl when you said "I love tv" "I am not going to apologize for it" Well let me just say Hell Yes and it's not a waste of my time either! Give me a good series or a football game and I will spend my money too!
Watching Netflix, or Amazon Prime, on my phone in bed is non-negotiable. I hate laying in bed awake..so streaming a movie works for me.

I hear that. My house, my sanctuary. Nobody gets in but me and my dogs. No TV. I use RU-vid to watch movies, listen to music and follow a few content creators. I used to borrow DVD from local libraries and TV channels's free players. But I am far more of a book reader. I go through a book every day or two depending of pages' numbers.
I’ve started buying more white cotton cloths for anything I’d use a paper towel for. I use the most on this single pane glass window that sweats water all the time right now during winter. I wipe it down every morning and evening to keep potential mold etc under control
We had a laundry chute growing up… put it through the slot and it would end up in a basket that caught everybody’s clothes. It was in the main floor bathroom
When I was 11 and a half I became solely responsible for my own laundry, full loads only, stain scrubbing, iroing, and putting away; if i didnt have a full load i was more than welcome to add family laundry As a top notch 6th grader in a 6-3-3 system I quickly cleaned my room one day by scooping all the errant clothes into the laundry shoot. My steel arched hiking boot set the tone by tumbling out and hitting my mother in the head; thank goodness I was out being important and all that. The unworn and also mini stack of folded clothes sealed the deal.
We have had a couple of long days and when deciding to cut the day and errand list short, I talked about an alternative plan for a Saturday morning. The other half looked at me a little funny but nodded and now that I've come here to catch up on the Friday moving video I know why he looked at me funny. Not sure if I'm a day late or a day early but the day just passing was not Friday. Still not sure if we'll catch you in the first run or in re-play but it feels like we gained a day.
"I hear that!" On the TV thing, budget time too! Then there's no guilt or shame when you have "Binge the new season of the Crown" on your schedule ;) Use it up and decluttering are definitely a priority for me this winter. I've been doing a good job not buying things the last year and a half so decluttering is getting easier since we aren't filling the decluttered spaces back up. I've switched to a bunch of reusable products and it's not only saving me money, but helping save the environment too. Once you get used to them, it's not a big deal.
I have a separate towel in the kitchen to dry my hands on and tell family to use that one also I have liquid soap by the sink and let others know to use that instead of my dishwashing liquid
I’m watching you on the tv in my room right now!!! I stumbled across your channel this afternoon and you have been on my tv ever since!! You are just what I needed for this new year
Great I am excited book club . I am 5 hours in front of you . But I did a lot of Sundays as it worked after church, they so much fun friends all reading together. ❤
Great video Kate! I love the idea of identifying and focusing on a priority and putting it in your budget. One idea for health and grocery budget is to swap out meat with beans, specifically dried beans which are sooo cheap! There are tons of easy recipes using beans as a main dish or in a hearty soup or stew. I'm choosing to focus on health this year, thanks for the nudge😊
Baked beans pair so well with cornbread or Irish soda bread and potato salad. One cup of dry beans makes five servings. Low and slow is the way to cook them.
I hear that. I agree with you on the TV. I used to have one in our bedroom and it was great (my hubby could play a game and I could watch a show). In this house, though, the TV in the bedroom just doesn't make sense and if I need a break from the game that he is playing, I will get a book and read in the room. I feel like I am playing catch up on some bills. We had to replace our well pump over Thanksgiving and it was an eye opener. I don't like that my budget shows I am prioritizing my debt over 'fun' money, but 2024 is going to be my year. I am going to be successful in no-spend January and going to really cut back!! Saying it to you and the K-Squad keeps me more accountable 🙂
Brand new to the channel and I love your take on your sanctuary. I've always loved my happy place, filled with peace and love. My frugal trick is to use shopping/gas apps and play games to earn Amazon points. Last month I got a beautiful cozy throw blanket for my bed. I just love it and it was free.
I hear that. I want to put an extra $1000 in my emergency fund. ( I will feel better) Save for a truck in 2024. Goal $8,000 end of the year. I need to start tracking living expenses again. Mainly for budgeting. Saving in the most expensive thing in own budget.
Haha we call it a hamper also in Indiana. Great video! I’m excited for the new year and getting our home in order. We just saved up for a new oven, fridge, and microwave! I’m so thankful for it because our previous oven was falling apart and now I can cook in peace! It was rough using a half working oven for months.
Loved this video! I'm retired and should be out traveling the world (according to popular culture) but I love being home. I went to Italy in September and although I loved the experience and want to return, I love being home more! And so refreshing to hear somebody loves their TV! I hear so much against it that sometimes feel guilty for having a TV in my bedroom. Although I don't subscribe to any streaming services (have roof antenna and free RU-vid/Freevee/Tubi, etc.), I never say never should there ever be something I absolutely want to watch. 😄
I could go to two work Christmas parties this month with free food. But I love my Christmas house too much! Every evening here is precious, especially because I'm a flight attendant and have to do overnights and work evenings. Not going to those parties! My home is my castle ❤🎉
