ART SUPPLIES USED IN THIS VIDEO
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
NEW WAVE POCHADE BOX
This pochade box has inspired me to get outside and paint more frequently because it's so small and portable. There's also a larger version available too.
6"x8" this is the size I used in the video amzn.to/49gZrJ0
11"x14.5" here's a larger version amzn.to/3SEBaY4
BENDABLE TRIPOD
This is the inexpensive bendable tripod I used in the video amzn.to/3wQPRiE
TRAVEL CHAIR
Having the option of being able to sit or stand when I paint means that I don't get fatigued as quickly so I actually get more painting done with each trip.
I bought the blue chair but there are other colors available amzn.to/3ueoEoH
GOLDEN OPEN ACRYLICS
Slow drying acrylics make blending and creating soft edges much easier when painting with acrylics. They also don't dry up on the palette as quickly so you won't waste as much paint. A must for plein air painting in the summer.
6 color intro kit amzn.to/3SEkaRC
6 color lanscape kit includes sap green and other colors that are useful for landscape painting amzn.to/48XaszC
12 color kit amzn.to/3UmYhrA
WATER MIXABLE OIL PAINTING KITS
I've tried out three of the kits so far: Cobra, Winsor & Newton Artisan, and Lukas Berlin. They all work well. I made a mistake in the video, the Grumbacher kit that I showed was actually a set of traditional oils. Their line of water mixable oils are called Grumbacher Max water mixable oils and I think you have to buy the tubes individually, I couldn't find a kit of them.
Winsor & Newton Artisan amzn.to/3Um5IyT
LUKAS Berlin amzn.to/3OlZOdq
Grumbacher Max amzn.to/42nr0OQ
Cobra amzn.to/49hmHqm
FLOATER FRAMES & GESSOBORDS
Floaterframes make it easy to frame panels and canvases. They include all of the hardware that you need and don't require specialized tools.
Floaterframe: This is an 8x10 maple but there are other colors and sizes available in the same listing amzn.to/3SE72vL
Gessobord 8x10 (there are more sizes and depths available) amzn.to/48LM0kF
DESKTOP EASEL
There are different makers of this style of easel. Some are better than others. This easel from US art supply is made from real wood and seems sturdy. I like using it for gouache painting outdoors when I sit at a table or by resting it on my lap.
amzn.to/3SjIS8K
MASTERSON PALETTE AND GLASS CUTTING BOARD
The sponge and palette paper will keep regular acrylics wet for days. When I use OPEN acrylics or water mixable oils I mix on a glass cutting board instead. keep acrylics wet
Masterson 12x16 palette amzn.to/42s9f0U
Glass cutting board amzn.to/47YTj7s
TUBE WRINGERS
I don't recommend the plastic tube wringers.I've been using this metal tube wringer since 2018 and it's still holding up. A amzn.to/3vXIgy9
Here's the heavy duty metal tube wringer from the video, it's available in different colors amzn.to/482x7t0
PADDLE BRUSHES
Great for quickly covering large areas with paint without straining your hands.

A review of Golden Open would be great. Especially with insights into how to adjust your process to their peculiarities (I know they are less opaque, for instance).

Thanks! I willl cover that in the review. When I paint with them I just remind myself to go slightly thicker normal. I think part of the issue is they're not as thick as heavy body acrylics so it's easy to brush them on in a thin layer.

Thanks, I'm always looking at ways to improve my setup. Another neat thing about using a backpack is that they have a lot of pockets and places to attach things to. Some even have a pocket on the outside for water bottles which would be good for washing out brushes.

4:35 So I learned from the Schmincke websitte that they carry a product called Medium W both in liquid and gel form and if you mix them with regular oil colors you can turn the oil color into a water mixable oils. Might want to check that out too.

I would love to see a full review of Golden Open acrylics! I recently started using them and like them, but feel like I haven’t yet discovered their full potential. I’m already excited to learn from this video techniques that aren’t possible with regular acrylics, so thanks for those tips

The open acrylics review is on my todo list.It took me awhile to get used to them, I was getting paint on my hands a lot because I was used to acrylics that dried fast😅.

What a great video, Chris. Please identify if you have a favorite floater frame and gesso board. Also, what is the bendable tripod you recommend. Thank you for sharing this wealth of information. And, you both mix and clean water-mixable oil with water? You inspire me! thank you.
@ChrisBreier
@ChrisBreier Месяц назад
Thanks! I like the 7/8" cradled Gessobord and the 7/8" Floaterframe with the natural wood color. It's easy to frame because the panel is the same depth as the frame and you just use 4 screws to attach it from the back. For large paintings I like the 1.5" cradled Gessobords and I display them without a frame. Water mixable oils clean up with soap and water, no solvents are necessary. You can thin the paints with water to make them flow better. The important thing to keep in mind though is if you paint in layers, each layer should contain a little more oil than the previous layer. That way the layers closest to the panel dries first, and the outer layers dry last. This helps prevent cracking as it ages. So for the first layer you can thin them out quite a bit. The second layer I normally might only add a small amount of water. If I add additional layers I add a small amount of water mixable painting medium to the paint. I added the link for the bendable tripod to the description. There are others small tripods that would work too.

I just found your channel. This was a very interesting video - these are all things I either use or have been very interested in. I’ve been going back and forth about the U.go pochade box, mainly due to the price. I am wondering what you think of the 6”x8” box, and whether you wish you had gotten a large size. Does it feel too limiting? I always think that I want to paint large and can’t imagine having such a small palette area, but recently I have started thinking that I would be more likely to actually go out and paint if I had a very small and simple pochade. I found your use of the metal brackets on the bottom of your watercolor palette interesting, too - that certainly makes the setup more versatile. Also yes, I would love to see a video devoted to the Golden Open Acrylics. Thanks!
@ChrisBreier

Thanks! I like the 6x8 pochade box! I tend to paint small outside because the lighting changes so quickly. The max height is 9" so you can fit a 9x12 in there horizontally. I actually do get out and paint more often because this box is so small I just keep it in my backpack with my paints. There's less resistance to getting started because everything is ready to go.The metal tin helps with the small palette because the piles of paint are in the tin and the palette area is just for mixing. I also like the quick setup and takedown times because I can quickly pack up my stuff if I run into trouble with the weather etc. If I decided to paint larger outdoors I would have to get the larger version or an easel, but I'd still use this one for painting small just because of the convenience factor.
@Anonymoi

@@ChrisBreier Thank you, this is very helpful. Oh yes I forgot to comment on the tip about using the tin for the paint piles… that seems like a great idea. I’m leaning towards buying this size.

@@ChrisBreier I think it's cobra had smell and was lumpy with water ..I left cobra after that... actually now I found a way to use oil paints without solvent either m Graham galkyd( fast drying) or walnut oil( non yellowing)...so i dont use WMO anymore... definitely traditional oils are more buttery than WMO..

@@ChrisBreier chris...i apologise...i checked today...its winsor and Newton that SMELLS...not cobra...but cobra mixed with water is quite lumpy and tacky.You were right. I used long time ago. Now...i want to start using my WMO stock because of you. Thank you🙏
@ChrisBreier
@ChrisBreier 5 месяцев назад
Thanks for checking, I like both Cobra and W&N but I think I lean more towards Cobra because the smell is more pleasant. I just tested out my Cobra paints and they seem to thin out with water okay. I found this in their FAQs on their website "Thin the paint a little with a small amount of water. Here the water and the paint have to be mixed well little by little to acquire a homogeneous mixture. The emulsion between water and oil does not occur spontaneously, but needs to be stimulated." So I wonder if you were adding too much water at once. If that isn't the issue then maybe contact Cobra and see if they have any suggestions. The only other thing I could think of is that the paint is old or maybe it could be a property of your water such as the pH or the hardness that's causing it to go lumpy.

About the water mixable oil paints. I used to make paints with linseed oil and I cannot see what they might add there to make it water soluble. Linseed oil has a very proficient smell to it, if you are sensitive to smells, that would get you for sure. What is that ingredient?
@ChrisBreier
@ChrisBreier 5 месяцев назад
I'm not sure what it is that they add to oil paint to make it water soluble but it's some sort of emulsifier. Schmincke makes a product called Medium W that you can add to traditional oils to make them water soluble. Cobra recently introduced a similar product called medium mix but I can't find it anywhere. I do wish these paints were completely odorless. Of all the brands I tried I think maybe it's Cobra that has the least amount of odor. Linseed oil does have a smell but it's not too bad when I work on small paintings, and the odor is supposed to be non toxic.

I find these pochade box with tripod quite shaky and unstable when i dab paint on canvas. Any solution?
@ChrisBreier
@ChrisBreier 5 месяцев назад
This smaller pochade box is pretty sturdy. I've tried larger ones that had storage compartments etc and they were wobbly. Another thing that helps is to get a tripod with tall legs so that you don't have to extend the top part of the tripod. The higher you extend the tripod pole/head the more it wobbles.
@pamgaylord2130
@pamgaylord2130 5 месяцев назад
what is the name of the tripod that you use with your pochade box?
@ChrisBreier
@ChrisBreier 5 месяцев назад
It's a Velbon but it's from around 1990 so I doubt that model is still available. 😀 I once lost one of the rubber feet from the bottom of one of the legs and contacted the manufacturer to get a replacemnt. They were surprised to see a model from that era. I was thinking about getting a new one, if I do it will probably end up in a video. I was looking at the ones from K&F but I don't know if I would like the ball head.

Chris...do you find open acrylics too thin and transparent?
@ChrisBreier
@ChrisBreier 5 месяцев назад
They definitely have a thinner consistency and if you brush them on too thinly it can get streaky. I brush them on a little thicker and that helps. You can't use them for thick impasto though because it might remain tacky or take too long to dry.
@kitty4tify

What is the tripod that you use?
@ChrisBreier
@ChrisBreier 4 месяца назад
It's made by velbon but it's from the early 90s so it's probably not available anymore. For painting outdoors it's important to find one that is stable at the height you paint at so it doesn't wobble too much. Weight is another thing to consider. If it's too big and bulky, you won't want tip haul it around on a hike.

Thanks Chris for posting all your videos they are very helpful. Do you have a preference between painting with oils vs. acrylics?
@ChrisBreier
@ChrisBreier 5 месяцев назад
Thanks! They both have advantages and disadvantages. I've been using mostly acrylics mainly because I don't like working with solvents. But the water mixable oils make painting with oils much more pleasant...I've been having fun experimenting with them.. Basically, acrylics are great for being able to apply multiple layers rather quickly and the open acrylics help with making blending easier. Oils are so easy to blend though, and I think the pigment load is greater so they have more covering power. Maybe I should make a video about this...🙂

@@ChrisBreierWhen I paint with acrylics I don't find myself worrying about the rules that apply to oils: thick over thin, fat over lean, and long drying times. I paint in both but prefer acrylics to oils. I've been asking other artists how they feel about it. Thanks.
@ChrisBreier
@ChrisBreier 5 месяцев назад
Yep, less rules to follow with acrylics. You can apply them however you want in any order. They used to warn not to thin them with too much water, but Golden tested this out and you can add more water than previously thought.
