Dear dearest Old guy I would like to hug you tight! Your words really made me so happy! I'm self-taught and my teachers are the artists like you on RU-vid. I try to learn the techniques. I love looking at the works of artists of yesterday and today. I don't think I have my own style, but now with your words you have given me confidence. Thank you very much. A warm greeting from Italy 🇮🇹🌹🌹🌹 P. S. I love your paintings very much
@@skora-theoldguy I really like abstract art. Your artworks are really beautiful and you are a wise man, so I subscribed to your channel. Many greetings🌹🌹🌹
I haven’t loaded my brush for a long time because I feel I am stuck for ideas. You’ve opened my mind and heart to just pick it up again. Thank you for inspiring me! I wish I can be in the same room as you to let creativeness just flow in. Thank you, thank you, thank you! 😍❤️
@piera8207, keep going, your style is in the way you paint. It emerges as you go and is in a way, your own unique 'signature' because no one else has your perspective, skills, interests or ways of working. Try other ways, if you so choose, like copying/reproducing an old master (just once), to gain knowledge, ... be that colour or technique or composition, or just learning their process. You can then take what you like from that, and do it "your" way to see how you can use that as inspiration to add variety perhaps. Above all, have fun - this is the greatest key, because it WILL show in your work. I have been an artist for 35 years, took a break, but deep down it has called to my soul, so am about to get back into it again, ... a fresh new start. This time is going to be interesting, a new medium in oils, a new house with a new studio, and a renewed perspective on life and ideas for my work ... In one way, there is a little terror of the unknown, but the excitement to see what comes out, is the impetus, that is urging me excitingly onwards. Best of luck with your journey, and may you inspire & create masterpieces.
@L.U.AURIEL Thank you very much for these beautiful and encouraging words! Art, creativity are the best way to express yourself. Art is also therapeutic, it gives me so much joy and desire to live. I therefore wish you just as much happinessd and satisfaction. A warm greeting from Italy 👋👋👋🌹
I discovered you this morning and I am an instant subscriber. I have been painting in my head for at least 25 years, but my canvases stand blank in the closet. Paints dried up in tubs and tubes over the years. I am too afraid to make a "mistake" and show it to my eyes... Today (as special a day as any other) I listened to you, felt my spirit caressed and cared for, and I made my mission of the day to find just a little strand of courage. I decided to humour myself by filling the first page of an old abandoned (and blank) journal, with colour - any colour. Today I let myself be seen.
Hi Absolutely amazing...congratulations on your achievement. It doesn't matter so much what others think... the important thing is what you think, and we all have tried not to know how something will be received. So, take care of yourself and try to get started with the canvases that are inside the closet. Good luck
Your comment about a child painting without worrying whether the painting is good or bad, until an adult steps in rating their drawings, really hit home for me.. When I was a young girl I would draw and paint all the time, almost obsessively. One day, I went to give a drawing to my mother’s friend, only to be belittled by my mother, and told (in front of her friends), I needed to grow up and stop drawing stupid things all day. I felt so embarrassed and ashamed 😔 Until this day I still feel something is holding me back, even though I have paints, brushes, pencils, canvases etc.. Without sounding petty, I need to get over this hurdle as all I want to do is draw and paint again. Thank you for making this point in your video, much appreciated and something I hadn’t considered until now.
It was a very sad story you experienced. I don't remember if I myself have had similar experiences. In any case, the adults (including our parents) want to help us as much as they can. But they are often very bad at it, because a child will perceive things very differently, and defeat, when you show something you yourself have created, will often stay with us for many years. I often try to think that it is the defeats that make us strong, make us grow and reflect on our situation. You can't do that as a child, but as an adult, you can use it constructively. Try it if you can, it might bring you a styye through this obstacle that you have been carrying around for far too long. I wish you luck...and courage!
@@skora-theoldguy Thank you so much for your kind words and view on this 🙏. You are correct, upon reflection, I know I have a style of my own and will pursue my passion despite this obstacle! You are very kind indeed Sir ❤️
Just wanted to thank you. I was recently diagnosed with spasmodic dysphonia ( condition that makes it hard to speak) and haven't been painting. I watched one of your videos, and you gave me inspiration! Thank you.
Hello Thank you very much for your comment. It's great to know that my video meant something to you. I wish you the best of luck with everything that goes on in your life, and hope that painting will give you inspiration and strength.
I started @58 4 yrs ago Actually took lessons from a local Art center. which gave me lots of motivation. Unfortunately other activities and events took me away for a year or more. 😕 This has me all motivated again. 😊
I am 67, too, and have been creating for over 30 years. I fell seriously ill and my work slowed down considerably. Two years ago I started up again, deisring to restart where I last left off. I came to the conclusion that paint was calling to me (I was an art dollmaker). So I retired my dolls and started painting! The last time I painted was in my twenties! Oh joy! So fun! Even creative problem-solving is fun! Even making a huge mess on the canvas or paper is fun.. my goodness, I am so happy when I paint. I remember one very positive thing from high school. AN art teacher caught me erasing a large area on a large drawing I was making. "Don't erase, make it work," she said. I still use that piece of advice today. All the best to you, Lollette!
What we learn and absorb in childhood will eventually be challenged as an adult. This is part of the process. It is also the process for many things- our relationships, career, hobbies, the way we think of and handle money. Thank you for identifying the art process and breaking it down into 5 chewable steps or phases. I appreciate your clear, concise, and simple method of teaching. I learn so much watching your videos!
Thank you for sharing your thoughts! It's true that our childhood experiences shape us, and I'm glad you found the breakdown helpful ... and yes fun and joy are the power behind lots of things in life.
Not only do I find your advice and thoughts interesting but I share your vids with non painting friends in other creative pursuits. Thank you for taking the time to make these, time that you could easily spend on something, someone else but instead you’re investing your time in all of us!
Thank you very much for your very kind comment. It's exciting for me to make these videos, and I really enjoy it. I am a little flattered to hear that you also apply my thoughts in forums other than the purely artistic. Interesting. Greetings from Denmark
I needed to see this. Someone asked me, “where do you get your ideas to paint?”. I said, I look at other art and pictures from the internet and that inspires me to paint something. It is like I guess, making music. The notes are there and everyone uses them. You just make your own song.
Enjoyed your steps - thank. you for sharing. Started painting at age 76 - age gives us an edge on being free. I am to paint everyday & love it! I am addicted - watercolor is MAGIG!
You so inspire I have been painting since I was five years old. Aunt ANN was my mentor. I am now 70+ and I’m still learning have my own gallery and have earned a living throughout my life. It’s not an easy life and there’s lots of rejection! Most important keep painting or whatever the medium is you’re using don’t be afraid to change.
I love your works. Thank you for sharing your ideas on how to be a better painter. It inspires me to go on and believe on myself as an artist. I Love you.
Dear old guy. I'm over the moon for having discovered your channel which is, by far, the best art channel I've seen. So, from an old guy to another old guy, thank you and keep on inspiring others with your wonderful and inspiring masterpieces!
You are such a good teacher, you have put into words a lot of thoughts I have about my work, I love flowers too and am trying to capture my emotions when enjoying them and nature. I find so much information and encouragement from watching your videos, thank you so much, you really have changed my life ❤
Thank you so much for putting the time and effort into producing this wonderfully helpful video. I loved every minute. And much gratitude for all the examples peppered throughout the video. Yay for wonderful, genuine, helpful, inspiring artists!!! i look forward to watching more of your videos! Thank, you, thank you, thank you!
I’m so grateful to you as at the right time I found your video. I’m a self taught painter and haven’t been much time into it. I’m still exploring to what I like and what I can do. I’d started to get some doubts but after watching this video I’ve gathered my courage again to make mistakes and learn. Thank you so much for such a wonderful video.
Hi Kathrine I am very happy for your comment and really glad to be able to help you in your process. I wish you good luck. You're only really brave if you do something you're a little afraid of. Greetings from Denmark
I just began painting 2 months ago. My paintings are very primitive, but I really enjoy it. Thank you for your wonderful words of encouragement. I also loved the fact that you showed your paintings from when you first started. Wow! You have really progressed into the wonderful painter you are today. Blessings
Your art is outstanding! Thank you for setting the artist up for success. I do find letting go, taking risks, ring patient and listening to your insights help to take the next step.
Thank you Henrik! A great reminder, and reinforcement, to just paint paint paint! Our paintings don’t need to look like anyone else’s or like some ideal painting. Also, thank you for speaking in English.
Thank you so much. You have confirmed everything I have been thinking over the past few months. For years I wouldn't paint flowers for very much the same reasons you gave in the video. A couple of months ago, inspired by a family members flowers I decided to paint them and haven't stopped since. They are such a joyful subject. I am at the stage where my main desire is to make the painting i am working on better. I am learning lots and starting to develop my own process. Most of all I am loving painting (most of the time anyway!!!!) Gradually I am starting to see my own style emerge - to other artists out there keep painting and do be brave - good things will happen!
Thank you for this refreshing video. I am recovering from major surgery and whilst browsing art channels. I paint realistic portraits but want to become more dynamic. Your channel will help me on my road to loosen up, make the most of my materials, colour and perspective. You may call yourself an old guy but you have given me new ideas 💡 in creating hopefully more inspiring art. 🙏👏🙏
Thank you very much for your lovely comment. It means a lot to me that my videos mean something to those who watch them. Thanks for your kind words and thanks for watching.
Hi Carmen and Hi Brazil. Hope everything is fine in your country and that your painting process is going as you want it to go. Thank you for your kind comment.
❤ your work. And your advice. As an abstract artist I appreciate this. I don't paint daily but your style is definitely what I've been looking for for myself. I've definitely evolved and enjoying this process. Thank you.
I’m in the process of finding my own style and developing my skill. When I stop and look at my paintings I realize I already have a style, I see it in every one. Now I just need to practice and do more. Love this video, and your paintings are fantastic! Thank you for posting.
I love your videos. Thank you for what you said about painting flowers. I stopped painting them too for the same reasons as you. I miss them. They bring me joy when I paint them. I think I will do a whole series of flower paintings now! 😊
Thank u sooo much for made this video... you had gave me courage to overcome my failure on painting... in the past 6months I quit social media just for concentrate on practise my skill and learning, ur video made me feel positive again
I'm glad to hear that. When you paint, you should feel good, in my opinion. It may well be that it is difficult to find the way forward in a painting, but you should preferably grow a little when you paint, not become smaller. But it's when it's difficult and you don't quite know what to do that you become wiser. If it is absolutely impossible one day, put the painting aside and wait until tomorrow.
I love your honest humility regarding the steps and your struggles, you’re not afraid to admit sometimes have been hard and at times your work wasn’t good. I adore the style you have now, its bright colours are gorgeous. Thank you so much for you advice, I try to incorporate it into my work. Much respect 🙏🏼
This was so helpful. I’ve become frustrated because I felt today that even though I’ve been productive I don’t have a lot to show, and have piles of incomplete work. I get tired of working on a painting and leave it alone- only learn that I can’t get back into it-
IThank you. I hope to develop it further. My paintings tomorrow should hopefully turn out a little better than they are today. The process of developing is the thing and naturally along the way I enjoy painting and the paintings.
Thank you, one for the sharing of your journey, two for the thoughtfulness of your reflection, and three for the vulnerability of your process. As I move from full time semantic worker to artist, I have been struggling with converting from feeling masterful to vulnerable. I can classify with the best of them, but is that line too thick, too orange… grrr. Thank you for the encouragement (even though you don’t know me) and the wack on the side of the head. You changed my perspective, now it is up to me to see what I can do with that!
Thank you very much for your very kind comment. I wish you the best of luck with your process in the future. Although the process can sometimes be frustrating, it is the immediate joy of painting that rules it all. I am very careful that this does not change. Kind regards Henrik
Your painting are brilliant and very unique. Love your work and the colour you use. I have started doing charcole and acrylic sketch's,just loving it. Since i have started painting i seeing all shades of sunset, clouds and and sceneries differently. I have decided that I will take pictures when I go for holiday's i will take pictures and then draw and paint them. Thank you for your 5 point advice, you have given me confidence that one day I will develop my own style and will be proud of it. Thank you for your informative video. Will follow you for inspiration. Bye for now.
Youth has the ability to regenerate. Cells that are young do. Youre not an "old guy" you see. Im sure you dont feel that way. Thankyou for your insight and truth. You have that. Can I say, and agree, that one cant find their style without doing. Without creating and making mistakes. When the joy isnt there its dead, unless one reckognises they are in the trenches for now. If theres no joy, theres no life or growth.
Thank you my dearest Old Guy. Your tutorial as always is very inspiring. I truly treasure your advice. I hope you keep coming to my screen bringing all the knowledge and guidance to me as an emerging artist who is still finding my style. I often have that kind of question when I was inspired by another artist’s work ‘inspired by or copying?’ Your video helped me rethink my approach 🙏💖🌻
Hi. Thank you, you are welcome. Regarding copying, I try to go for what is fun, and it is not fun for me to paint exactly like some one else. Take the inspirational part an make it your own ... that can be fun. God luck!
Thank you so much! Your videos are clear, honest and so very freeing as I have been stuck for a few months. You have given me hope, dear Old Guy, from a dear old gal. I will continue to watch and learn from your amazing videos, You are a gift.Again, Than you so very much.
Thank you so very much for your inspiring words! I have been in a 10 month slump of not painting at all. After watching this video I can feel the creative juices starting to bubble up within me! Bless you for sharing your journey!
Hi and best regards to Las Vegas. I've heard it's very hot in LV, and I myself struggle a bit with the colors drying very quickly in the heat. How do you manage it? Thank you for the kind words.
Thank you so much for this video! I found it very inspirational to me as a relatively new artist. The best tip I took from this was, on those days when I just cannot seem to get the creative juices flowing, or the results aren't coming close to meeting my expectations, is to simply take a breath and say: "ok, today I may not make a great painting, but I will learn from what I am doing..." Just subscribed, like &shared this video with several in my painting group!!
Thank you very much for your video! I started painting 5 years ago and am still finding my style as I explore different types of paint and processes, and so your advice is very helpful to me!
This is great advice and at the right time ! I paint and then I stop painting,no inspiration ,no feeling ( so I think) no motivation etc. Etc. All negativity and then I hear you! Wow like a shot of adrenaline! You are so right and deep down I knew this but had all kinds of excuses. Your message came through loud and clear. I will start again. Thank you so much! Best video ever!
@@elizabethkoeman1149 A great tip to inspire creativity, is a way that I found through zentangle designs. Just draw 2 straight and 3 to 4 curved lines across the canvas (they can cross over each other, forming sections), randomly from edge to edge. They don't need to be parallel - purely random. I then look at the entire thing, and take 15 mins to a half hour coffee break, letting it penetrate my subconscious, without thinking about it. I return with an open mind, and contemplate what I can do with it. What does it bring to mind? ... a landscape, seascape, a still life, a city or rural scene, or a science fiction/fantasy image, perhaps something specific like a marketplace, portrait or an abstract piece? The lines could be section boundaries or actual things (like a road, or line of hills, a tree form, row of buildings or waterway shape). It's a fun way to see what comes to mind.
Hello It's great to hear that my video has helped you regain your courage. About not feeling inspired. Perhaps this is where you get the best ideas ... you are in a way "clean" without expectations and ambitions. You are empty. It's a good place to be, not all the time, but sometimes...think about it. Good luck!
I look at Printerest all the time. And find it very inspiring. I evolve as you said by being inspired, and it still comes out as my own style. Somehow somebody takes over my brushes and it must be my inner me that is in control! 😅
“Love them all, they are all your children “.-That wise phrase made me smile and I’d like to never forget that lesson. Thank you so very much for sharing your wisdom and journey as an artist. This video was very timely for me as an artist who is trying to figure out my own “style”. Continuing to paint joyously is the first key and the rest will evolve like you mentioned. Thanks for the encouragement.🙏🏼🙏🏼
Thanks. Yes, finding your style... It can be a bit like growing as you get older. You develop. Some of it can be controlled, others will come to you. I think about what I put into my head, since this is fuel for the development that happens ... whether you are aware of it or not. In many ways, I sit back and enjoy the ride.
Thanks so much for this presentation. Your work is amazing, inspiring & very beautiful. I have just moved out of the rental market into a home of my own. I am currently settling up my home studio, about to plummet into oils for the 1st time, very excited about my creative journey ahead in a brand new medium. Again thanks.❤
Very interesting video, thanks very much. I've been painting my whole life (on and off) and it brings great joy. I really like many of your paintings but the single image that captivated me the most was your granddaughter's painting of the family and when you zoomed in to her painting of you. It's great to see how a child views you and she did a really good job.
Just the video I needed for the stage I'm in now! I've done a couple of paintings that I really dislike, but I did learn from doing them. Can't wait to get into the studio again!
Thank you. I really enjoyed hearing about your art journey and the tips you shared. I am a beginner and currently intimidated, and you have inspired me to relax and have fun.
It was extremely helpful thank you I have started late in life I paint all the time and have been evolving to develop my own style Your advice was very helpful thank you
Thank you so much for this timely advice. As a new painter, I have not yet figured out my style. I love very geometric designs with bold colors, but I also love softer, more organic designs so I have tried both. It's a mood thing, I think. I enjoy switching it up and experimenting. Keep the videos coming!❤
