We used to be able to fly downtown and usually ended up crashing into one of the skyscrapers. My friends and I would stay up late trying to see who could make it all the way down the street without crashing. I also had a Microsoft Sidewinder game pad (still do, actually) that I mapped to the tank turret so one of us would drive and the other would blow things up. Awesome childhood memories.

My father had a job working in an arcade in college. He would beat me in anything we played even though he no longer gamed himself. He used to make fun of me for playing “pattern games” - any game where the scenario is the same and you beat it by learning the sequence of events (Mario is a great example). 😂

For the Driver one. The thing everyone should have known is that if you pause the game in the tutorial, there is a "demo" option and you can watch the computer do the whole thing. It's good to see what you are supposed to do but also gives you a very good order for the stuff. I remember starting with a burnout then going as fast as you can to the other side of the parking before braking in front of the wall. That takes out the speed and brake test within 10 seconds of starting.
@scottthewaterwarrior
@scottthewaterwarrior 4 месяца назад
What most people think of as the "tutorial" isn't even the tutorial either. The one your talking about with the video (which also had a controller overlay showing which buttons to press) was under "training" and also gave you a ghost car to follow when you tried it yourself.

@@scottthewaterwarrior It's been 20 years since I last played but I remember watching the demo over and over and that's how I learned how to do the tutorial. I probably would have never played the actual game without that.

One neat trick I remember about The Dodo in GTA3 was that it gained more speed while diving than it lost while ascending. That's physically impossible, but super useful. As soon as you're off the ground, waggle the nose up and down to gain speed. Eventually you're going fast enough to fly indefinitely. I remember flying that all over the map. Including finding some cut-scene-only areas WAY outside the play area.

@Monsolido
@Monsolido 4 месяца назад
I don't think customer support was available for every console in every country. Good thing Falcon called because in the before internet times, if you got stuck in a game that was it. You just put it back in its box and never play it again. That Sonic thing was real. Pressing up and down on those bumpers was incredibly counter intuitive, and I'm sure many players never got past them.

I can confidently say that as a kid I always had a 'collector' mentality. Coins, stamps, etc. So when video games became prevalent, I always took GREAT care of my games (now mind you, PS1 discs tended to get 'scratched' just from general use by the system itself, there was no real way to AVOID this if you actually PLAYED the games), but otherwise I kept things as immaculate as possible, kept all the boxes/instruction booklets/etc, and especially kept the meager preorder bonuses we got with games in the beginning days of "Electronic Boutique" (which later became EB Games, and then Gamestop). Of course, I also played Magic the Gathering pretty young, so that also helped with a collectors mindset and all that. So when Pokemon and Yugioh came along I was already well versed with TCG culture. Now... mind you I sold my 1st ed Charizard for like a grand a few months after Pokemon TCG first came out... and at the time that seemed like a great deal, and with the pronouncement of "rotation" where old cards would become literally unusable and unplayable (unlike say, MTG's Legacy format), I had figured at the time that card values would climb slightly but eventually stagnate for older cards and merely have a collector's value (like I figured MAYBE a 2500 cap in 5-10 years time on the Charizard... hooboy was I wrong and am kicking myself on that one, now.)

Gah, the whole "taking care of your gaming stuff" really gets to me. I use to make sure I took the utmost care of my gaming disks and would always get soo upset with how my cousin took care of his...or...didn't. He had an entire dresser drawer lined with disk cases and like 90% of them would be empty and the other 10% had different game disks in the cases. He had just a tall stack of like 30+ disks on the top of his entertainment center and it blew my mind how he didn't seem to care about his games. (Mind you, he was in like up into his late teens doing this).

About the kingdom hearts questions: The reason it exists is to help more experienced players. There are pros and cons to all 3 paths. If you choose boosted exp earlier (pre 50) you will have a much easier time through a basic playthrough. If you choose the slow start though you DRAMATICALLY increase the level speed in the late game which is better for 100% and the secret bosses later on. If you're going to 100 you come out WAY ahead with the later option. The balanced option is stupid.

I was JUST thinking about the kingdom hearts difficulty level selection out of the blue the other day. The time I spent completely stressed choosing the weapon to keep/lose without even knowing what it would affect 😂 Replaying the remake as an adult when KH3 came out and realizing all those arbitrary choices made such an impact on game play was mind blowing.

In Kingdom Hearts, it isn't a hard mode thing. You either... 1. Level up fast until lvl 50, then slow 2. Level up slow until lvl 50, then fast 3. Medium- paced leveling. So if you wanna rush through the story, choose 1. If you wanna hit lvl 100, you choose 2.

I honestly don't recall ever having an issue with those barrels in sonic 3, i mean its like a swing, you swing yourself back and forth to gain momentum, pretty sure I'm about the same age as Falcon too, was also a huge sonic fan back in the day.
@VinTheDirector
@VinTheDirector 4 месяца назад
The controversial part was in using the up and down arrows to get that swinging momentum. Getting that momentum by jumping, yeah that makes sense, we easily saw it as we crossed the level. But then there’s just that ONE barrel it doesn’t work on. And no matter what we tried, there was no reason for us to be looking up or down while on that barrel. And there’s no other situation in the game where those arrows would control something that isn’t Sonic or a vehicle. The big problem is that the devs didn’t make that mechanic easy to notice or learn.

Sonic- as a kid I got stuck at the barrels in the SAME SPOT WHERE YOU WERE BLOCKED. There was no going back. Later in life, there was another route and the solution was SO SIMPLE. As an adult, I had to look it up. And every other situation in the game you jump for up and down motion. Ff8- man I got stuck so much. I was like 11 or less. I ended up getting soft-locked at the boss on the third disk. I was saved at a boss, but even with the guide- I didn’t have enough healing. I’m sure now, with that same file I could do it, but I had no idea. I never read anything and got lost. The PS1-PS2 always worked. My disks are so scratched and still work. If you have a scratch at the start of the game, it was useless, but I’m surprised anytime I put one in to a newer system versus old.

The anti piracy measures in Spyro 3. The first time I played it was in a pirated version I loaned from a friend, and I didn’t understand why it had so many issues. Took me a while to realize that those “glitches” were intentional, and only happened on pirated version. That’s when I returned that copy to my friend, and warned him about it, but he didn’t believe me. We were 11 back then. Eventually, I got a legitimate copy, and got a proper experience.

Those barrels in Sonic 3... I got PTSD when you mentioned it! 😂 I never figured it out correctly at the time but I remember jumping enough for the oscilations to be quite large, jumping off and holding right as it got towards the bottom and it glitched me below the barrel!... I'm 36 now and only heard a few years ago the expected way to control them! All those lost hours... 😂 Still love that game.

I was the same, bought Steel Battalion at launch, kept everything in immaculate shape. Nephew had a birthday party and they got into my off-limits xbox case and you can tell how that went. I still have the controller boxed up somewhere but I just never replaced the game. Wish I could've at least hooked it up to my PC and turned it into a controller for something.

5:30 I had a 3rd party controller for PS2 that was clear to show off it's superior construction, one of their tricks was that the cable was secured with a molded thingy that was held captured in a holder molded into the casing; so that, no matter how you tugged on the cord, it'd never stress the connection to the board... miss overbuilt peripherals...

While Kingdom Heart 1’s difficulty thing is indeed cryptic, especially after you already chose the difficulty at the start of the game, I think on repeated playthroughs it’s a genius way of changing up the gameplay. Depending on your choices of how you level up you may learn certain abilities sooner or later etc.

Im old enough to remember being stuck on games without access to the internet or youtube, it took me forever to leave clock town in zelda majoras mask, but i never would have thought to call tech support to ask like you did with the sonic barrels, i only found out how to get out of clock town months later when a kid at school told me to play the ocarina to that kid under the clock tower, another thing about gaming before youtube was it was a bit of a gamble to buy a new game if your friend didnt have it and let you try it, the games never looked anything like the ads, and without a letsplay you have no idea what your getting until youve spent the last 3 months allowance on it (unless you rented it in which case you added $8 to the price of that $70 game), or having a gameboy that runs on AA batteries and the cost of the batteries being a limiting factor to how long you can play on it, kids these days just wont get it,

On the Sonic 3 dreaded barrel, there's that one that you HAVE to get through in order to progress; I was only able to get through it by keeping the bubble shield and brute forcing my way by bouncing down as the barrel was going down. With enough tries (and lots of time spent) I was able to JUST get through the bottom and quickly race to the end of the stage before the time ran out. Sometimes

Bought generic controls just to ensure the originals do not get damaged :)

Digimon world takes me back. I really enjoyed it once I figured out how to not get sukamon lol. Training and all that influences the digivolve result and you could experiment along the way to get new digimon you'd never seen. Digimon world 2 I feel expanded upon that better for more predictable results while implementing the mechanic of passing on parent DNA and not feeling so punishing when you restart with a Rookie level digimon.

I did actually figure out how to fly the Dodo in GTA3 back when it was originally released. I recall it was rather hard to control. If you fly around behind the third island, you will find the facade of the opening cutscene. You can in even land on those roads.

It's okay Falcon, I'm with you on most of this "feeling old" stuff - and I didn't know what a Slalom was until I was much older and I think that was only because I played some snowboarding game. Wired controllers are something I still use though - I can't stand wireless controllers or a wireless mouse. That tiny latency measured in milliseconds? that extra latency actually eats away at me - I can't get used to it. I could have when I was younger, but now I'm spoiled enough that I cannot POSSIBLY adjust to wireless controls. If only I couldn't tell the difference in latency.... but somehow, I can... will... and do.

I figured #4 out as a child after a few minutes of PUSHING BUTTONS. Children figuring things out by actually trying different things and experimenting is what led to the phenomenon of parents in the 90s and early 2000s amazed that their kids can figure out those new electronics so darn fast and easily.

My cousin learned the disc thing the hard way. He left the Army Men game Sarge's War on the floor and stepped on the disc on accident. The GameCube disc shattered into a dozen pieces. Years later he bought Call on Duty Black Ops from a friend for $5. He was playing it every day until the friend realized he sold the wrong copy and begged him to trade it back. The copy he was supposed to get had a lot of little scratches on the read surface. He was so bummed. His mom asked me if there was anything I could do for it. I was about to buy a resurfacer, but I took it to a guy I knew at Gamestop. They didn't have a machine, so he sent me to a local video store. I asked the woman working and for the low price of $6.25 and 10 minutes of my time, the game was restored to shiny glory. My cousin was so happy. He bought two more games off of that turd. I had to tell him to stop buying them if the scratched got any deeper.

I as able to keep the Dodo going indefinitely and while it was awkward, it was amazing! I was so proud of myself as a kid since nobody else I knew could do it lol. As far as Sonic 3 we had rented and I only had it 2 nights. I got stuck on the barrel and couldn't pass before sadly having to return the game. Only when we went to the mall weeks later and I ran to gaming guide section was the secret revealed.
