I pick 10 outstanding Film Soundtrack albums on vinyl (plus a bonus special edition pressing), all with great sound that can be happily listened to on their own, away from the movie they were written for. They encompass a huge range of musical styles, from classic John Williams to the percussive rock of Stewart Copeland and the unique avant-garde sound world of Mica Levi.
There's something for everyone here.

Entertaining video. The first (OK, maybe second) soundtrack L.P. I bought as a pre-teen way back in junior high school was The 7th Voyage of Sinbad (Colpix 504 in the U.S). I even saved my allowance for a "back up" copy, which remains pristine after 60 years. In the early 1970s I bought the U.K. reissue L.P. (in much less aggressive sound), which remains in my collection. I bought the Varese Sarabande L.P. shortly after its issue. It was the first stereo edition of the score. Later, when Varese Sarabande issued that recording on CD the master tape had deteriorated to the extent that literally half the Overture was now missing. I obviously skipped that CD and instead bought the company's spectacular CD rerecording with John Debney and the Scottish National Orchestra-- nearly an hour of music versus the 34 minutes L.P. The only downside of Debney's interpretation is, as he later admitted, he didn't listen to the original Herrmann (actually Muir Mathieson conducted because of a labor dispute) recording beforehand, resulting in some wayward tempi. There are worse crimes.

That Varese Sarabande LP is one of the best sounding records in my whole collection. I love all those re-recordings of Herrmann's scores on Varese.

Good video, nice selection, Wish you showcased a wider genre span in your regular videos. I love classical/baroque/contemporary, but I think contrast is crucial, and I'm sure you can do that easily.

Thanks for watching, Stunty! All a matter of time - and these days I have little since starting to write for Tracking Angle.... But your point is well taken.

Excellent video. You expanded my horizons in terms of soundtracks. I had no idea that Wendy Carlos did Clockwork's Orange score. I just recall the Rossini and Beethoven pieces. I will seek out your other recommendations. Many thanks.

So happy you are watching and discovering great new music! I love Wendy/Walter Carlos's work - all of it. An amazing, groundbreaking talent. You know she also composed the soundtrack to Tron, combining orchestra and electronics, and the recording was produced by none other than the vinyl guru himself, Michael Fremer. He reviewed the excellent audiophile vinyl re-release of the soundtrack on his former site, Analog Planet, and I am sure you could find his fascinating article there .

Great video! I just subscribed today! I wanted to put a vote on my list of great sounding soundtracks would be a Dutch CBS pressing of Trevor Jones’s score for “The Dark Crystal.” I found it about 30 years ago in a vinyl store. Waaay before the Gen X-ers fell in love with the movie. Quiet surfaces and stunning dynamic range and soundstage. :-) Thanks again for your great videos

I remember seeing that movie when it came out... Trevor Jones is one of those composers who remains a little under the radar but he did excellent work. You have inspired me to revisit that score.

If you can find or have a great pressing, the master tape must be phenomenal to sound as good as it does , to me, anyway. It’s actually become one of those records to put a sound system through its paces for me. Agreed about Trevor Jones.

"The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad" is a delight...and a very pleasant surprise to find it was in stereo. Have you heard his score for "The Battle of Neretva"? It's a real pip, hugely bombastic. I have the DCC Classics CD of "Raiders of the Lost Ark". One of the first audiophile CD's I bought, probably 1994/1995. The original soundtrack LP and CD of "Alien" sounds absolutely dreadful...flat, compressed and hissy. I've never been able to find a decent version...perhaps this release. I saw "Alien" in June or July, 1979 when it was first-run...I wasn't quite 10 years old and my father took me to see it. I remember the marquee: "70mm Dolby 6-track". I made it to the chest burster scene and stood up and told my father we had to leave. He was seriously annoyed; a few years later on CED we saw it finally and now I love it. I was just too young.

Can't agree with you about the newfangled Alien artwork, which doesn't hold a candle to H.R. Giger's brilliant originals.

Oh you won't get an argument from me there! But as an alternative for records the new artwork is a lot of fun!
