I used to go into WHSmith on a Saturday when I was a kid and spend hours messing about in the ZX81's. I dreamt of owning one. Had a Dragon 32 when I was older which blew my mind until I saw the games on my mates Spectrum. Good days 😎

When our neighbours (Toni & Tracy) both got a Speccy I was green with envy. Here was my ZX81 that was kicking out crap B&W blocks and they had ace graphics, sound and everything! Now these days there are some truly amazing ZX81 programmers around that I only wish existed back in the day. They would have given the Speccy programmers a real run for their money.

If you've got a PC at hand I'd really recommend this 3D Monster Maze remake - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RJuOE9yostE.html Also can I say look for ZX81 Chroma. That is very clever.

I think it is amazing that a system so limited was able to run games.
@Villordsutch

Yep. I honestly don't think the original creators of the ZX81 would have believed what the programmers would produce from their machine.

Hello, yes you forgot one great game which kept my brothers up all night trying to get the highest score, "Combat Flight by G Manuel 1982". Built my ZX81 from Kit as part of a college project. Had a Comodore Pet 8K in college that could take 3 commands per line. ZX only 1 but learned to write economic code as a result. Game runs well on EightyOne emulator but I still have the tape, though I mostly use the emulator. Got a Memotec Keyboard and Memotec 32K Ram Pack back in the day for the ZX81 along with the ZX printer.All still work.

I don't think I've played that one. I'll have to look into it for the coming future.

Back in the day I was lucky enough to get one of the earliest Speccies (my first computer hardware update was the 32k RAM stick) and the '81 was always veiwed as "it's not worth having", but this lot proves that was FAR from the truth. Thanks for these, I'd forgotten all about Mazogs (playing Maziacs mostly)
@Villordsutch
@Villordsutch 5 месяцев назад
Thanks for dropping a comment here. You're right, I started with a ZX81 (I still have it) but back in the day, once my neighbours got a ZX Spectrum my heart was broken. There's could do so much, whilst -at the time - mine couldn't. These days, plus a few back then, the machine is singing. If you get chance have a search for Paul Farrow, Dr Beep, Sir Morris or Buster (to name but a few) here on RU-vid. I have a few in my Playlists, but directing you to just my channel is a bit cheeky. Also checkout ZX81 Chroma, that will show you a brand new amazing side of the little machine that can.

Modern games are very hard to play in the beginning. You have to learn first how everything works. This takes time. Only later do you get good enough to start enjoying yourself. I think the big appeal of these ZX81 games is that you can start having fun right away.

Yes there are 2 web sites hosting most of my programs. one in Germany zx81.de/andre one in France zx81.ordi5.fr/andre Yes all my programs are completly and only created with the BASIC language even though the details like the blinking of the small eyes in YOOGOR seen to be otherwise and the speed of the animation is faster then the avarage ZX81 BASIC programs. 3D monster maze was the first game I remember playing when I got a ZX-81, but then got more into 3D defender ( both by J.K. Greye) . I now have both of these on original tapes and can't wait to try them again.

the ZX-80 does not have sound, except when you add the programmable sound adapter (PSG) extension the ZON-X80, which added the AY-3-8912 PSG chip, but there were only a few games that supported it.

Yes, using only the built-in BASIC language. However, programming in assembly code (we, incorrectly, used to call it "machine code", back then) you could access the a video memory directly. Most Hi-res games used this and the loaded program, as viewed on-screen, was just a few lines of BASIC that kicked off the main assembly code routine. The day you first discovered that your BASIC ZX81 was just a high-level layer on top of a more fundamental, ridiculously quick raw programming language was like taking the Red Pill in the Matrix.
@Corsa15DT
@Corsa15DT 4 года назад
@@johnbishop6045 I knew about 'machine code' back in 1989 but I was only 8 years old, so I sticked to simple basic codes :)
