Hello and welcome to the first episode of TOP 50 games in under 10 minutes.
Today we are travelling back to the year of 1982. The year of “bedroom coders”, Pacman/Frogger and Invaders clones, simple games coded in Basic and a few real stand-out gems like 3D Tanx, The Hobbit and, of course, the Football manager.
It all started out back then for the Speccy and as you'll see in the next episode, when we'll cover the year of 1983, the advancement in quality of the games between the two years was, quite simply, astonishing.
Games are presented in no particular order.
As a brand new channel, we are all but invisible in the vast fields of RU-vid content, so if you like what we do and want to help the channel grow, please smash that like and subscribe buttons. Humble and basic beginnings for the might Speccy!

What a fantastic compilation! So many fond memories! Ground Zero was actually one of the first games I ever played at home on a computer, being a 16K Speccy back then. And Ground Force Zero, how well I remember that one! My granddaddy was determined to learned programming back then in the eigthies and he started with typing down the BASIC program of this game and analyzing it. Big thanks to the uploader, that's a great work!

Great to see so many early classics in one video.

Fascinating seeing such early games. Many of these, especially the very playable ones, would have been extremely exciting to kids back then. I can't recall when I bought my Spectrum but I'd had a VCS and a ZX81 before then. Some of these arcade conversions are pretty good for their time. Great memories again!

The Hobbit was a fantastic game. Lost many, many hours in that world, trying to get Bard to shoot the Red Golden Dragon 🙈

Nice list, I had most of these back in the day, by the way, your entry for Space Invaders (6:23) is actually called Spectral Invaders :)

I remember many of this games. I played a lot with the chess game, and I was totally unable to beat it. I am a very bad chess player, but I am able to win some other programs or persons, except this little program from 1982. Many of the games of this list were able to run in the Spectrum 16 Kb, it was an achievement because very few kilobytes were actually free in the 16 Kb model.

I was (and still am) a bad chess player, so I could never win against Speccy :)

What about spanish Spectrum games?
@retrononame

Selection is based on the games I personally played and know about. So it's possible I missed a few. If you know of any Spanish games I missed, please let me know. I'll be glad to check them out.

@@retrononame There were many spanish developers companies in those wonderful years, Opera, Made in Spain, Dinamic, Toposoft. In Spain, where I live, oldest titles are very expensive in second hand market.

In any case, my favorite ones of all times are Dizzy and Dragontorc, english games which are in higher level.

I covered quite a few games from Dinamic, Topo ... in later episodes (1985, 1986 and beyond). I don't really know many older games from Spain (which is a shame). Will do a bit more research though. I'm just in the process of making a list for 1990 and there are a lot of good games from Spain made on the list. Stay tuned for it as it will be uploaded soon.

Take into account that we are talking about year 82, the first spanish "A-grade game" was La Pulga (Bugaboo in UK), and it was in 83. Dinamic started in 84, other companies even later.

There must have been at least 10 invaders/galaxian/phoenix clones in there, too.

Worst games was in 1982 year. But in USSR/Russia this was in ~1989-1993. Vector-06c, BK and etc. Very poor programs and bad games was written in this time.
@retrononame
@retrononame 2 года назад
Well it does make sense. Spectrum was released in 1982 and it would take a bit of time for programmers to get used to the machine and its capabilities. I don't really know when the Spectrum was introduced in USSR. Was it in later years? And is this the reason for bad software in the 89-93 period?

This is why gamers were just uncool nerds

Yet 30 years later when similar games came to mobiles they were suddenly cool. Why?! Just because women started playing angry birds?

@@Darwinion profits from mobile gaming made investors push mobile gaming as cool and normal same for other games, as budgets and profits exceeded movie budgets, it became obligatory to make everyone play and bring their money

No, they were just normal kids who enjoyed gaming. I don't recall any of my friends fitting the "nerd" cliched description (quite the opposite) but we all enjoyed computer games.
