I just recently purchased a Harmony Silhouette with mini humbuckers with the gold foil covers. The pickups are unique & amazing! Spanky, chimey, then give them some dirt & they growl. Aside from that, the build quality, fit & finish & hardware is outstanding. I have owned many high quality guitars & this one is as good as any. Made in the old Gibson factory in Kalamazoo & affordable. Oh. I almost forgot. You could play this guitar all day without tuning it.

Shijie TLV Classic P-90 retrofitted with "T'Armond" (dynasonic type) pickups in soap-bar mounts. The P-90 pickups Shijie used sound awesome, but I bought a second one to put T'Armond pickups in, because I've always wanted that sound. They are very different from the P-90 sound, much more clarity, very sensitive to pickup height, and picking technique (P-90 pickups more forgiving). I can't say which is my favorite single-coil pickup, it depends on the guitar and amp being used, but those MFD pickups have always sounded great to me. I'll never forget a local guitar player who plays with Sonny Hess was in a used guitar store about 20 years ago, and started playing through an amp and the sound was incredible - different than the usual Fender tones, so I checked-out what he was playing, and it had MFD pickups!

Excellent list, D.B.!! Got a Danelectro "Hodad" (Bigsby)-- and it can make just about any sound that my other git's cant! When I want "outside the box" it's right "in the pocket"! Regarding the Jazzmaster: If one is looking for ALL the tonal possibilities the J/M can offer, the "Vintera" is the one--not one of the "Modified" models. The original style "drop-in" bridge and dual pickup profile controls (among other things) provide access to all it's got!

Darrell my first guitar was a 1965 Sears Silvertone with Amp in the case, Christmas present 1965, which I still play to this day. It has a fingerboard radius of 20, do you know if the re-issued Danelectro guitars still have the same radius or close? I have several other Guitars in my collection, but the Silvertone always feels right in my hands to me. I'm thinking of adding a new one to my collection.

A recent purchase I made was a “ Vintage T72 tele “ hollow-body in Cherry burst with the Wilkinson mini humbucker in the neck and Wilkinson Strat style single coil in the bridge, Maple neck with rosewood finger board. I’m not a “ Tele “ fan but this guitar took my eye on EBay and was a really good price. That guitar is an awesome sounding and playing guitar, totally different from any of the other 50 guitars in my collection. Just a crisp sound and bell type ringing to it. My BC Rich Mockingbird 2003 model ( Natural finish )with the Rockfield humbuckers is another guitar with a unique tone, I used it to record all my rhythm parts because it has such a clean chord tone, better than my Gibson LP and my PRS S2. I have a “ Private Build B&G Little sister “ but it’s loaded with their in house built humbuckers that are quite unique in tone also.

All that pickups are very nice sounding and very different to the standard, i must recommend you to try Guild guitars, they have great humbuckers (both bigger and minis) that sounds very different to the Gibson ones and also, they have nice single coils as the Franz ones, that the Soapbar ones, have a P90 style response and the Dogear ones are very unique sounding pickups. I bought a Guild Jetstar in last December and i'm happy with it in every aspect.

I agree with your comments about the Dano. It is the single best and most unique guitar I have when played through my older Fender amps. I know the Tele is more mainstream but I have TelePlus first series with Lace Sensor pickups that sounds different than any other guitar I own. It's been my favorite "go to" guitar for gigging for almost 3 decades. It doesn't sound like any single coils that I own. The third guitar I'll mention is my electro magic DuoJet. I don't know if they used filtrons or copies but this guitar sounds better than my Les Paul with P-90's or most of my other guitars. I didn't expect it to sound and play so good at the price point but the more I used it for gigs ,the more I started using it instead of my Les Paul. It's chimey like a Gretsch but it also has a surprisingly good fat tone too. For an inexpensive guitar the setup was spot on just like my Dano that I only paid $200 for brand new. I haven't played any gold foils but that's next along with those D'Angeleco's that you reviewed. Fun video that's got me thinking....

I have a new Supro Clermont with gold foil mini humbuckers that sound very nice, but they do not clean up when you back down the volume. Since I sing when I play I constantly ride my volume, which is something that doesn't work well with gold foils. So I just use it to record with. .

9, 10, & 11 but especially the Slick Guitar with that sunken brass fully adjustable bridge, 1 volume and a switch, I generally don’t leave a guitar stock, his are a modders dream, because they are built well, hi quality hi value and unique inspired hardware. That very guitar, I’m imagining with the controls swapped and a stacked Pot, so you can add a tone control plus a super switch (6 poles) so you could run the individual pickups in series or parallel, like 2 different guitar sounds in one body, the parallel wiring yields slightly less output, and a brighter tone, but not thinner sounding, still has excellent bass & mid response. Question, is the Leo design hum canceling, or low noise? Or do they cancel when run together in the middle position?

Gretsch G2655-P90. It was a Streamliner run. I bought it just because I love p90's and I love Gretsch guitars. It has become one of my 2 main guitars. (The other is a Strat... always a Strat) Speaking of unique tones... this guitar is SEMIhollow (like an ES-335). Small sized (like an ES-390). And it has staple p90's. (Those you see in the LP customs of 1955 in the neck) Both in the neck and the bridge... It sounds amazing. It's has the most beautiful clean sound of any guitar I've owned. I strongly suggest for those p90 lovers to look for one in the used market. This guitar is a treasure.

The coolest sound I ever heard is the new revived Watkins Rapier 33. Sold as the Rapier as they can make the guitar but Watkins still will not let them have the name. It was a Brit made entry level guitar in the 60's. The body looks very Strat but not a traced out clone. It has 3 PU and custom made whammy cosmetically like the original with Jazz Master feel but very good tuning stability. The PU's are an original design by John Entwistle. Visually they look like Rickenbacker dual coils as they have a toaster PU cover. They have a unique wiring that gives them several very distinct and different tones. The PU's have dual bobbins with the magnets sitting sideways. One magnet inside each coil. They have more chime than a Strat but are fuller and richer. Kind of Brian May hot rodded Burns PU's sounding. The quality control is very impressive. Brit's Andertons sells them for $495.00 USD.

I’d recommend a Fender Jaguar too, shorter scale and slightly different controls, a Fender Mustang with the traditional 3 way switches and trem is another choice (Fender has been doing so many “Mustangs” without both of these, that’s not a Mustang, it’s a Duo Sonic! (For an interesting combo of these and a Strat, check out a Squier Cyclone, I have one, aside from their usual scratchy frets it’s a nice guitar). Haven’t played one yet, but G&L has the Doheny, their take on the Jazzmaster, but with a Strat-style bridge and their PTB circuit, there’s even a high end CLF Research version with special humbucking V-12 pickups.

If you want great example of Jazzmaster tone listen to the Venture earl albums. They used them on most of their recordings. There is also a video on You Tube of Joe Pass using a Jazzmaster and a jaguar for Jazz

Hey Darrell - I've a Millimetric MGS3 with Gold foil P90s, made by one of your fellow countrymen Florian Bouyou - sounds like nothing else you've ever heard, the neck pickup screams 🙂

I have been seeing a lot from Baum guitars lately. Some of their models have gold foil pickups. The demos I've heard are of a stye of playing that I'm not fond of. It surely would be nice if you were to do some demos ,,, maybe comparison of Baum's gold foil pickups to other brands.

Hey Darrell, what about your Relish guitar with the swap-out pickups giving you tones-a-plenty! LOL!

I got the Japanese Revstar with humbuckers... For €2000 or so. Outstanding custom instrument. It's Japanese perfection. In terms of quality for your $ it beats every brand out there... There's what I call the Jazz switch (fat switch), really gives any position a sweet and round, fatter clean tone... Makes this guitar sound like a 335... Lower the tone a bit and you can get in Metheny territory, surprisingly... Playability is perfect, so is the fretjob.

Your list seemed to be based more on pickup types than the guitar itself. I agree that sound with guitar videos would have been better.

There are two guitars that I'd love to have for the tones and looks too, and they are, Squier 51 and Fender Sixty-six (with the lipstick p/u's). However, they make neither of them lefty! Oh well!

Lol that many people are too lazy to do a simple search of your channel to find your full review of these guitars but went out of their way to whine about the lack of sound samples. I thought it was an excellent list of guitars to try if you're looking for something a little different and I've wanted to try several of them for a while. Btw, Korg is selling the Vox Bobcats for $700 off list price through Reverb. I bought the V90, the one with their take on P90's, and like it a lot. Plays great, sounds great, and looks cool doing it. It's worth checking out if you get the chance.

I prefer the G&L ASAT with the jumbo MFD pickups. (I've owned a S-500 and ASAT Classic S with the S-size pickups.)

I bought a VERY cheap Samick branded old electric guitar with a HB bridge and 1 single coil neck pickup and the best sounding guitar I eve had (of maybe 100) ... It was clearly from S.Korea, so the pickups were likely good ARTECs ...

It's not a weird, or some boutique guitar, but I played a Les Paul Jr., with a single P90 in the bridge position , that a friend let me borrow for awhile, because I didn't have an axe at the time. I was very skeptical at first. I was like, this little guitar with one P90 is gonna sound awful. Boy, I tell you, that little thing rocked it's ass off! I started playing some VH and some Metallica.

Two guitars you need to check out for inclusion into this list, Darrell: a Richenbacher (Rick-O-Sound!), and Red Special! 😁😁😁
