Live like a local when you travel. We always book apartments instead of hotels which puts us in the middle of things instead of only in tourists areas. Our favourite pizza place in Dresden is in the middle of a residential area.

Nadine, your videos helped inspire me, a 60 year old, to start traveling a lot in 2017 until Covid. I was in ten European countries plus Mexico, Florida and Hawaii. Going back to Europe ASAP after a tour of US National parks this summer.

The food is the best part about traveling. I love going to the local restaurants when I travel. When I travel in my home country, I try not to eat at National Franchise. When I went to Europe I allowed myself to go to a McDonalds or two. It was interesting with the different menu items. Especially the macaroons at the McDonald’s in Switzerland.

haha, of course it's interesting to try the different menus. I unfortunately have had bad experiences with McDonalds abroad, Thailand and Vienna, both time got super sick. lol, no more McD's for me

I love all these tips! The one which speaks the most to me right now is the one about going out to travel now instead of waiting later. You never know what may happen later to where you may never get that opportunity again! Once the pandemic is over, I really want to get out there more than I have prior to the pandemic! Thank you for the video!

I agree so much to this! I am super grateful for my passport - as a Portuguese, we can travel so many countries around the world, we're very lucky. Agree that traveling shouldn't be about competing, but evolving as a person, growing with the experience itself :D I have had a loooot of bad things happening during trips including having all of my camera and drone equipment stolen from me, but I am still grateful I got the chance to travel at least! :D Loved the video Nadine! :)

Tip number five is great, but also problematic. I totally agree that if you have the means to travel you should do so. It's so beneficial for so many reasons, but even budget travelling may be out of reach for some people. My mom retired in December 2012 and in January 2012 my dad was diagnosed with lung cancer. He was fine for a little while, but eventually my mom spent her retirement as my dad's caregiver instead of travelling like they had planned. We lost dad last year and it's super important for me to help her realize those travel dreams, even if I'm a poor substitute. I encouraged her to turn some of his ashes into a gemstone that she can wear so it's like he'll be traveling with us. Basically all that to say, yes, one should never put off travel because your future is never guaranteed. However, while she might be in a decent place financially to travel, I'm definitely not, though I'm working on it. I've also gone into debt to travel in the past and while I certainly don't regret the trips, I regret my means of getting there and I'm desperately trying to dig myself out of that now.

I 1000% agree with your first and last points. Only once I started traveling did I realize how big of a privilege it was to have an American passport. And once I met my husband, who hold a Russian passport, it was hammered home even further. Which also relates to your last point, that people are not their government. I found it interesting that you showed shots of Moscow at that point, because the people I've met from there are wonderful! But many Americans find it hard to make that distinction, especially based on what they read in the news.

couldn't agree more!! Every point is so on, I've learned more about myself and the world by traveling. Take opportunities that come your way, step out of your comfort zone and learn from the experiences. Do your best to make that trip happen, I've never regretted any place I've traveled to. You come to realize we are more alike than the media sometimes points it to be. The world is beautiful, take in the moments as it may not come again, and if you get to return to a place you've been before you may see things that have changed. great vid!

Yes to most people are friendly! Or at the very least they’re not going to call you an idiot for not knowing how the subway system works. If you’re polite and socially aware (ie maybe don’t ask someone who looks like they’re in a massive hurry) locals are generally happy to answer questions, especially about food/stuff to do.

So true Nadine. As someone from South Africa, I'm glad you mentioned my country so early in the video :) Most South Africans don't even own passports, and the thought of traveling outside the country does not cross their minds. Luckily for me, my first ever corporate job my boss was a big traveller. He had been to every country on earth. Anyway, your videos have been inspiring and I like the tips and tricks you give. Best of all is that unlike some other travel vloggers, you actually cater to us budget folks. I watched your videos on how to pack for an international trip; how to choose a place to stay; the budget, etc. To me you are more valuable than the people who brag on about flying in 1st class and staying at 5* hotels. At the moment nobody wants us South Africans to visit because of our variant of the COVID19, but as soon as things are sorted I'll be on the first plane out of here again.

You are so right about people being much the same as us no matter which county they come from. Language does not always have to be a barrier. I had a drinking session with an old guy in Paris, and we managed with sign language. Also my neighbours from mainland China have their father come to stay sometimes. He does not speak English but we manage to converse with Google Translate on my phone with hilarious results because it mistranslates a lot. The wife is so sweet. She brings me herbs from her herb garden, and she brought me some food from their Chinese new year dinner so I wasn't left out. I send them new year cards every year, and get Christmas cards from them.

A weaker passport definitely sucks in the beginning and I normally had to do a full visa process for every place I visited. They'd require a stack of documents such as bank statements, proof of medical, proof of employment or any proof that I have a reason to return home and then it might cost >$100 to process 😅 but for the most part the visas I'll end up will be multi entry for up to 10 years :) So you go through a process of collecting for the 1st couple of travels but now I'm at least sorted for a big chunk of the world....or at least until my passport needs to be renewed or I run out of pages 👀

Tip # 11: Explore close to home and your own country!! There is TONS of places that RU-vid Travel Vloggers DON'T cover. I find that most will cover exotic locations or BIG Cities but won't take the time to explore smaller cities or small towns/villages etc... due to the fact they find them uninteresting and figure most people would only want to see those BIG Cities and Exotic locations. I find this ESPECIALLY TRUE for those who have done travel vlogs across Canada. Most go to the BIG Tourist destinations like Niagara Falls, Banff, etc... and BIG Cities like Edmonton or Toronto or Vancouver, yet they will skip out on smaller cities like Hamilton, Brantford, Kitchener, London, etc... (yes I am using Ontario as I am from here and researched this on RU-vid here). Smaller Cities have amazing events, festivals, sites to see and explore... beautiful municipal and provincial parks in them etc... and small towns and even villages (such as St. Jacobs here in Ontario) have their own wonderful charm, sites to see and explore and sounds and even food and have that small town feel of their own. Hell even out in Alberta there is a small town that is used for the filming of the CBC Series Heartland to explore. Sometimes people need to depend less on the recommendations of the major RU-vid Vloggers/Influencers and go explore for themselves and maybe the big name Vloggers/Influencers should do the same. That is why when my fiancée begins the process to move to Canada from Oklahoma, we are going to start our own channel and make those smaller cities and small towns and villages a part of our channel and explore them. Giving not just my fiancée that opportunity to tour, travel and explore the major places in Ontario and across Canada, but also those smaller cities and villages to show the wonderful charm even they have. That way maybe we can show everyone who will watch our videos how it's not just the places shown by the major RU-vid Influencers/Vloggers that everyone thinks are amazing but the smaller creators like what we will be, can show that small town charm along with the big cities and National Parks here so maybe we can create a some tourist dollars for those smaller places.

4:00 I totally agree with this point that the media makes rare occuances seem common. Sex trafficking is by no means rare, but from the data we have, it's rarely someone randomly targeting you and usually a trafficker will build a relationship with you first. But I think it's also important to note that some people have a higher risk of danger. Like if your part of the LGBTI community, you should look up the laws and social climate of the place your visiting to make sure it's legal to exist or at least know what resources are available there in case you need help

Hey Nadine!! I’m heading out to the mountains soon and I’m SO nervous about wildlife encounters. I’ve done my research but most of the videos are middle aged men with guns lol, not happening here in Canada. If you have any tips for encounters with wildlife that might be a video idea!! 🥰
@mattofstie9298
@mattofstie9298 3 года назад
Hmm, good idea for a video. For now i'll say that the vast majority of the time the wildlife will be more scared of you and will run away if you get too close, but still obviously try to avoid encounters. Make lots of noise when you hike - talking loudly, singing, play music, bear bells, etc. Carry bear spray as a back up and watch some videos on how to use it. Look out for signs of wildlife such as animal poop. (you probably already know all these tips) Like I said, most animals will avoid humans. I've been pretty close to few black bears and as soon as they noticed me they turned around and ran away from me. Though I wouldn't want to encounter a mama bear with her cubs. I would also avoid grizzlys, moose, cougars, and Canada geese 😂But again, most times they will avoid you if you are making lots of noise

I like how you've added some shots from your trip to Russia, when talking about politics vs. individuals. I moved from Russia to US 10 years ago and I still get hit by narrow minded local individuals stereotyping me all the time. At first I was not taking it seriously, but after 10 years of vodka jokes it does get really irritating!!!!

Tip # 12: Don't just focus on the fancy restaurants and places with wine/alcohol service that are shown in a lot of RU-vid Travel Vloggers/Influencers videos... Try finding those small out of the way burger joints, the mom and pop restaurants, the little out of the way coffee shops.... There is a lot of travelers on a budget and not all of them can afford that expensive place to eat like in Toronto's Distillery District etc... This will also be a part of when my fiancée and I start our own travel channel and find places that are smaller restaurants, diners, etc... the "Mom and Pop" type burger joints etc... that people can actually afford on a budget. Even smaller bakeries that sell donuts, cupcakes, etc... that are not part of a franchise or chain store. There is lots out there....just go look for them...which is what we'll be doing in our channel when my fiancée moves here from the U.S. As well there is a whole part of the world that has never consumed alcohol or are a recovering alcoholic/addict that has made the choice not to drink/consume alcoholic beverages so we need to find restaurants and diners where we don't have to feel like we have to order that bottle of beer or glass of wine or spirits with our dinner. I have watched a few channels (especially Samuel and Audrey) where they go to these places and it seems like by halfway in to the end of their videos, they have had so many alcoholic beverages that they are half to three quarters in the bag. This is a huge turn off to some of us who search for travel videos. This will be something my fiancée and I avoid as I am 16 years sober.
@BucketListTravellers
@BucketListTravellers 3 года назад
Great tips! We love finding those little local gems. Sometimes we find that if you go on TripAdvisor you can only find really touristy places, so it's good to keep an eye out for local cheap eats. Totally agree with you regarding alcohol as well. We're not big drinkers and it does seem like a lot of channels go heavy on the alcohol. I watched one video this morning where the vloggers had to address the amount of alcohol they were drinking as they got a few comments by people that noticed how much they drink 😬

I don't understand how people can just go somewhere and disrespect the culture and the environment. Hopefully people can be more eco-friendly and thoughtful when travel picks up again

I'm 30 seconds into the video and cannot resonate with you more. I come from Sri Lanka and while we might have great beaches and good food we have a useless AF passport and that restricts a lot of opportunities.

It’s easy to travel when you never have to worry about having a real job.

I'm a greybeard and I have been at it for 30 years. The bucket list is ruining so many places. News flash, self-absorbed westerners, the world is not your Disney. Travel is not the same as being there. Learn some humility. You are never as cool as you think you are. Most of all, go with compassion and a heart for the poor. One of them will be your landlord in heaven one day. Let your travels challenge your assumptions. That is how I ended up living "overseas" and finding a whole new life and family.

Great tips Nadine! Especially the "Dont judge a person by their country". Geez, the US was a really HOT MESS Especially last year up until Biden Actually got sworn in! I wasn't sure he would make it with all the chatter from the trumpies online. Anyway, I hope most of the world doesn't put all Americans in the nutshell of the radical right. Half the country DIDN'T vote for trump. But again, thats only half so...
