Right up my alley! Can’t wait to hear you, Martin and panel’s discussions. My picks… Hard Attack - Dust - 1972 Montrose - 1973 Tyranny & Mutation- BOC ‘73 Rocks - Aerosmith 1976 Helluva Band - Angel 1976 Legs Diamond - 1977 Narita- Riot - 1978/79 Nugent - 1975 Van Halen - 1978

Bolder Dam - Mourning Riot - Narita Alice Cooper - Killer Randy Holden - Population II Bloodrock - s/t Montrose - s/t Dust - Hard Attack Sir Lord Baltimore - Kingdom Come A couple of cheats - the closest thing the US had to Black Sabbath was probably Pentagram so I'd choose their "First Daze Here" compilation. But although recorded in the 70s, it wasn't a real album and was only released decades later. And related to that, similar story - "Child of Darkness" by Bedemon. Incredibly raw, bad demo quality, but very very heavy for the time.

From heaviest on top, down to less heavy, with some comments. To get something actually heavy on list, my list includes any type of official release that has more than 3 songs. 1. Tyrant - 1978 Rehearsal 2. Pentagram - 1973 Demo 3. Manilla Road - Underground - Only at this point things start to get uncompromisingly heavy 4. Sir Lord Baltimore - Kingdom Come 5. Kiss - Double Platinum - God of Thunder is very heavy song for it's time, without it Kiss wouldn't have come close to the list. Double Platinum has all the Kiss's heaviest songs of the time, and proportionally has more heavier songs than the other Kiss albums, also the versions are mostly heavier than the originals, despite Detroit Rock City being nerfed. Destroyer would make it on the list below this, but I consider that double entry in spirit. 6. Sir Lord Baltimore - Sir Lord Baltimore 7. Iron Rage - Iron Rage 1 - First (in the order of least heavy to heaviest) record on the list that's actual Heavy Metal, also equally heavy throughout, not just 1-2 heavier songs among less heavy songs like many other records. 8. Bloodrock - Bloodrock 2 - Song D.O.A. rises it to the list 9. Dead Boys - We Have Come for Your Children - Made it to the list only because of song Son of Sam, otherwise it's only slightly heavier compared to typical Hard Rock of the time. 10. Iron Butterfly - Live - Sneaked that one on the list, the heavy songs are really from the 60s. Interesting challenge, ranking below this gets much more difficult. There's either Hard Rock that's barely heavy and about as heavy compared to each other, or records that have one heavier song but the rest is not heavy at all, or records that have songs that have only some heavy parts, wimpy vocals are problem with a few records. Some of the bands that would have been close to making the list with their 60s songs had wimped-out starting from the -70 or earlier.

Martin representing in his Max Webster shirt ... NICE!!! Also, and I cannot recommend this enough, check out the compilation Warfaring Strangers: Acid Nightmares on the Numero Group label for some serious off-the-radar and one-off American bands from the early 70s doing druggy proto-metal biker rock. Great show guys, with some excellent choices. In the UK, Sounds would tempt us with US 'heavy metal'. A lot wasn't really heavy (Molly Hatchet, Journey, REO etc) but in my view these lived up to the hype. Albums already mentioned: Van Halen - Van Halen. Montrose - Montrose Same band, different album: Aerosmith - Draw The Line. Their heaviest album IMO. Angel - On Earth ... Starz - Violation Not mentioned: Cheap Trick - Dream Police. Half the albums heavy. Title track, This House Is Rocking, Gonna Raise Hell, Writing On The Wall, I Know What I Want & Need Your Love Blackfoot - Strikes. Always the heaviest of the Southern Rock bands The Boyzz - Too Wild To Tame. A heavy Bob Seger. Black Oak Arkansas - X Rated. I know it's live but I think this is America's heaviest album of the 70s: Ted Nugent - Double Live Gonzo.

Hi Parish, great picks. You are right about Sounds trying to sell us US Metal. I don`t know if you have one - but I have a free double album from Sounds, I got it in 1980 ( the tracks are from the 70`s though) I think with coupons from the magazine. The albums called Killer Watts, it`s stacked with US bands many that are on your list, Aerosmith; Molly Hatchet, BOC, The Boyzz, Ray Gomez, Journey, Frank Marino, & a few European bands, Trust, Shakin` Street. Good to see you on Many shows across RU-vid, you're always a good listen. All the best mate.

I would say that Heaviest 1970s songs would accurately sum up the concept, considering many American bands from the 1970s had a variety of musical styles on every album. 1. Ted Nugent - Hammerdown 2. Aerosmith - Round and Round + Nobody's Fault 3. Dust - Suicide 4. Sir Lord Baltimore - Wheel of Fortune 5. Montrose - Dreamer 6. Dirty Tricks - Night Man 7. Blue Oyster Cult - 7 Screaming Diz Busters 8. Angel - Mirrors + Under Suspicion 9. KISS - She + I Want You + Parasite 10. Grand Funk Railroad - Inside Looking Out + Sin is a Good Man's Brother

I wanted to include them but their heaviest is the Leslie West Mountain record and it's from 69. Blood of the Sun, Dreams of Milk and Honey, killer stuff.
