A big takeaway from this is realizing his sexual orientation changed after the assault. This defies the premise that we have an inherent sexual preference. In many instances preference can be born from trauma, past assaults.

It's pretty easy to find out who it is. Just because he didn't come out and do an interview like Fiona doesn't mean people don't know. @ericabamforth6528
@ericabamforth6528 4 месяца назад
I’m speculating based on experiences- Because the real Martha has been revealed and is threatening to sue Netflix the SA topic had sadly been sidelined. If you watch the BAFTA awards it’s noted that Richard Gadd & Jessica Gunning are tight lipped and not giving interviews. Also, dynamics in the entertainment industry can get spiteful even when there’s a blatant attack. It’s a small world where everyone knows everyone and despite the “me too” movement there’s a lot of “so and so had the nerve to defend themselves by snitching on me. They’ll never work for me or anyone I know again!” It’s a rotten shame.

Does anyone else feel sorry for the real life 'Martha'. Of course we don't know what truly went on, who knows if he perhaps led her on or made her feel like there was some kind of connection. I just think she was/is clearly mentally unstable, and he in some way allowed it to continue for sometime, which he admitted. He has now profited from it and she will now get lots of hate, which will only continue to make her mental health worse which was probably never even addressed. I honestly feel sad for her and think she needs help
@markpostgate2551

To a certain extent, I agree, there is an image of an "abuser", actually locked in to some academic models of abuse in widespread use, that maximises their agency as if doing harm was their only intent and everything was in their control, and I don't think that is true of anyone, let alone people who genuinely are harmful. I would be very surprised if mental illness were not involved, and I believe "hurt people hurt people" . However I wonder if you, or anyone that agreed with you, would feel the same empathy for the abusing party if the genders were reversed?
@TubularBelles

Definitely BASED on real life but since Fiona Muir Harvey has come forward, it’s obvious she never went to jail, she IS a lawyer, and she was never previously arrested for stalking. It’s okay to exaggerate for drama but he now has to take responsibility for people believing that the real person did everything that was portrayed and is now being harassed and abused. Also it bothers me that he never went after the rapist which can be argued is a far worse crime than anything she ever did.

I totally just don't know on this one. Why did he go back and visit his abuser? I feel no one would allow for a woman to be acting that mental in a pub and screeching and shouting at him all the time when she was having her angry mental moments, but then again, who knows, people are not the same anymore. Excellent writing. Truthful storytelling. Great acting. Gives visibility to men as victims of assault, not just men, bisexual men. Turns your entire wold upside down while it takes you from seeing a person that seems not to be able to help themselves to a point in which you can see what most of society sometimes seems not being able to see. Men have feelings, bisexual men exist, sometimes people are just going through more than one terrible thing at a time to a point in which they can feel the whole world has let them down. Baby Reindeer makes history. From Mee too, to Hannah Gadsby to the future: which is learning that anyone can be a victim of such crimes and we must not ignore these situations no matter what the aggressor or the victim look like.

Even if she is a stalker and fucked up his life he really needed that and thats the sad part. Like chapter 7 shows how alone this man is and made a grown man break down here. He was too scared to see me hurt/upset and didn’t want any of his peers to make fun of him. By the time I found out (during one of his mental treatment sessions) that the information was disclosed. By that time he had turned to drugs to deal with the pain, sadly passing in 2018.

It's incredibly admirable how Richard Gadd bravely shared his personal experiences, even those that might make him vulnerable to prejudice. His courage in opening up not only helps him in his healing journey but also extends a supportive hand to others who may be going through similar struggles.

It truly messed me up for a long time , and even now i always take in everything around me on high alert. 1 out of 12 woman are stalked in their lifetime and 1 out of 45 men, whether known or not known. Be careful out there. Stats are more so woman, so it is harder for a man to be taken seriously which is sad indeed. Anyone should be able to take protection orders regardless of gender, however. The main thing that stood out to me in this show is the depiction of his loneliness. Many say why did he keep going back to the abuser? Why did he initiall like the attention from the stalker? Gadd's character comes across as incredibly lonely and that may be the reason why he initially held onto these relationships

The term was coined after a bank robbery gone wrong where the perpetrators held several hostages for almost a week. None of the captives would testify against their captors and even raised money for their defence!) The reactions to trauma are often very illogical, mainly because it involves the right side of the brain (emotions etc.) whereas the left brain deals with logic.

I 100% agree. I have so many thoughts and reflections on this series and it all goes back to loneliness and the desire to be seen. Martha feels invisible when she goes in that bar, but when Gadd offers her tea she feels seen. When she starts coming back and complimenting Gadd he feels seen. When darrien shows Gadd attention he feels seen. So many people walk around day after day and feel like noone even notices them. And then when they get some attention it feels good. I think Gadd and Martha both displayed unhealthy behavior toward each other. And in a way, Gadd and Darian as well. If you watch the episodes when Gadd and darrian are at the club and just hanging out, it seems to me that Gadd may be experiencing attraction toward Darrien. In the bathroom, he gets right in his face and says I'm down for anything like he wants to kiss. And he seems disappointed when darrien exits the stall after they do the drugs. I don't think he wanted to be assaulted, but I think he may have been open to exploring the possibility of a consensual encounter. And even afterward, he goes back. It's all very complicated and sad.

@katherinesteele6198
@katherinesteele6198 4 месяца назад
Having been a victim of SA myself, I found it pretty triggering if I'm honest. Upon embarking on the series i didnt realise it was autobiographical, hut i could tell through directorship that the protagonist had experienced drug related SA before, and the way it depicted events was exactly the way it happens and feels to be a victim of drug related SA. In some ways I felt relieved that someone had been through almost exactly the same experience as me, but i also think there needed to be adequate trigger warnings for victims of SA at the beginning of the movie, in that I had no idea what kind of turn it was going to take and by the time i got that sinking feeling of the direction in which it had segwayed, i was already invested in the protagonist enough to want to know if he survived it and the effect it had on his life. Had it had adequate warning at the beginning of the series i might not have watched it, but I'm also in a very healed place about what happened and have processed a lot of the PTSD of the event. That being said, i think people need to feel a sense of discomfort in order to actually realise what SA survivors go through, as society is quite niahlistic about the conversation and it impossibly niahlistic about male survivors of SA, which is a conversation which very much needs to be had. There was also a sense of cathartism at the purging of everything that happened to the protagonist in a very public way, in that 99.999% of survivors will never be able to tell their story that way and have peopoe listen, and it inspired me to want to write my own memoirs about my experience, but also gave me a sense of doom that people might never listen to it. All in all it was incredibly brave of the writer to tell his story, and in the end if it helped someone then it was worth it, i hope it inspired more male survivors of SA to come forward

If Gadd really wanted to disguise who "Martha" really is, why did she so closely resemble the woman who claims to be the "real" Martha? She's obes, she's Scottish, she's a lawyer. Why not make Martha a slimmer woman from, Liverpool or Birminghan for example> Why not change her profession from lawyer to something else - an accountant or teacher? It would have been so easy so I wonder if, maybe, Gadd is seeking some level of revenge for the treatment he, allegedly, received. Or maybe the real Martha is, in fact, a slim young redhead with a disability and a degree in accountancy, and by sheer coincidence, Fiona Harvey thinks it's her. I do actually believe she's "not telling the truth" - to quote her own words, I'm just playing Devil's Advocate" - again, quoting her own words which, by the way she misuses.

Add to tthat the fact that they state it's a "true story" - not a fictionalised account, or based on true events....this is what could get them in trouble - unless they provide proof of alll the emails etc. Once again, I'm playing Devil's Advocate here, because I don't believe her account of herself.

One thing that gets rarely discussed because of the controversy is how sexual abuse can confuse someone’s sexuality and even their gender identity. This series did a great job of portraying that. His attraction to Teri was a consequence of the abuse he experienced. Let’s not deny that. Of course, Teri had no idea and called it his “prejudice” ie transphobia, that he wasn’t sexually attracted to her.
