He mentiont Michiel de Ruyter, but his pronaunciation was so off,i needed to hear it tree times before i figered out what he said. But anyway,a good video.
As an expert in tech and equipment of the Royal Dutch Navy, I think you missed a few things. 1. Check the dutch navy in 1950-70’s, they were one of the biggest in Europe. 2. The Dutch 1913 battleship proposal. 3. The incredible strength of the Zeven Provincien class frigates, which are stronger then most destroyers. 4. The HNLMS Johan de Witt, Rotterdam (LPD’s) and HNLMS Karel Doorman (JSS) 5. They’re replacing most of their ships in the next years. 6. The rescue of the crew of the ss Taipan against Somalian pirates. I’m not saying this video is not good, I’m saying it’s incomplete. Btw, thanks for using my Wikipedia pages. I wrote em. ;-)
You forgot about the second and third Anglo-Dutch wars. The first one was a defeat for the Dutch, but they got revenge in the second and third wars. For a example during the second war, the Dutch defeated British in the 4 day battle. One of the longest naval battles in history. And they raided Chatham, the first mission of the Dutch marines. There they destroyed many British ships and captured the flagship as a price. This is biggest defeat in British navy history. And in the third one, the British worked together with the French. During the Battles of Schooneveld and Kijkduin. The Dutch were outnumbered, but still defeated the French and British fleets. The admiral who made all those victories, was Michiel de Ruyter. The best admiral in Dutch history and one of the best admirals in the world. There was also a 4th war, but that was not really as the first 3 wars, because the 4th one was about 100 years later and was not as big as the other 3. It was also part of the American Revolution. In this war, the Dutch navy was not really weakened, but the VOC (the Dutch East India Trading Company) was weakened.
The Royal Dutch Navy also used to have a Carrier! The HNLMS Karel Doorman (R81), The Brits sold it to us in 1948 (formerly known as the HMS Venerable) sadly we got rid of it :c (We sold it to Argentinia in 1968) I thought this was a pretty cool thing since not a whole lot of countries used to have Aircraft carriers, you also wouldnt expect the Dutch to have an aircraft carrier!
The English fleet only became the most powerfull when the Republic invaded England in 1688 and helped modernise the English economy under the joint leadership of our William the III of Orange. The invasion really was the culmination of the naval competition between the republic and England.
And prior to that rather significant event, the Dutch Navy sailed up the river Thames in 1667, in the Battle of The Medway. Since the entire British fleet was at anchor and most of its sailors sent home (because the English king Charles II had run out of money...), it was a great opportunity for the Dutch to burn most of the British fleet and tow back in triumph the British flagship, Royal Charles. If you look up "Battle of the Medway," you'll find a British video in memory of the event.
@@AudieHolland The royal arms on the transom of the Royal Charles, is on display in Het Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. I got dirty looks when I ask if we could have it back 😆.
GrandTheftGaming We also had several cruisers in planning, some very advanced ones for the times even, though the peace-movement of the time caused the cancelation of these projects.
One of the Zeven Provinciën-class cruisers (HNLMS De Ruyter) was the flag ship of the Peruvian navy (BAP Almirante Grau). It was decommissioned in 2017 and it was the last of the gun cruisers in service in any navy. It was build by the Wilton-Fijenoord shipyard and launched from Schiedam. Funny, I'm a Peruvian living in Rotterdam and my wife's father was born and raised in Feijenoord, Rotterdam. Small world.
Interestingly I just found out that during WWII the Dutch submarines sank more Japanese ships than the Americans and British combined. They operated from Australia.
you forgot to put in the HNLMS Abraham Crijnssen which was covered by it's crew with branches bushes and grass so they could hide from the Japanese and escape after
Why don't you guys mention amphibious ships and amphibious capabilities when talking about navies or military powers? Amphibious capabilities is a strategic capability, like airborne units and air transport capabilities.
You forgot quit alot like the dutch terrible twins, that after ww2 we had quit the fleet, like 1 aircraft carrier of the British collosus class named after karel doorman. You forgot vice admiral conrad " a ship a day" helfrich. You forgot aboute piet hein, who raided the Spanish silverfleet. And at this time the biggest ship is named karel doorman. And our submarine hunters during the cold war period of the holland class and the friesland class. You only told 100% basic stuff of the dutch navy. Maybe you can dive into my 2 favorite dutch ships the dutch terrible twins. I think you can enjoy that story. These 2 sistership deserve some credit for their achievements.
Nothing about Michiel de Ruyter and his Chatham Raid, or Piet Hein and his capture of the Spanish Silver Fleet?? This episode is very light on history.
Well i do serve for the Dutch Navy ( Defensie called in Dutch) and it's really nice. especially when our submarine rises above water. thanks for the great video!
Great vid! i was in the dutch navy from 2005 till 2011. Rob Kramer was my commander on HMS Evertsen (F805, zeven provincien klasse) during on of my first deployments. great memories there.
You also forget to mention we have also 2 LPD Rotterdam Class Naval Vessels. the Rotterdam and Johan de Witt. Also the JSLL Karel Doorman class support vessel. (the bigest in Dutch naval fleet.) Also planned for future 4 New (non released) all purpuse Frigates an 4 to 8 (now under defelopment) Submarines
Errors: - The Dutch did have light cruisers in world war 2, including five modern ones. Two were sunk in the battle of the Java Sea, one was scuttled as a breakwater for the Normandy mulberry harbor, and two survived the war. Probably you meant "Battleships or [Battle]-Cruisers, which would be correct. But since your later mention of the Ruyter doesn't mention its class, I thought it should be pointed out. - The Netherlands was not invaded in "february" 1940, it was invaded on May 10, 1940 as part of Fall Gelb, the initial push by the Nazis against France which culminated in "Dunquerque".
@FTD Facts hey, the next time you do a video about Dutch or Netherlands. Feel free to contact me, I'm Dutch and I love your vids about history and stuff. You mentioned a lot, but there is surely much more to tell. So defenitely a part 2 :D
I think our best move was, when the HNLMS Abraham Crijnssen disguised itself as a tropical island to escaped Japanese forces while they were stranded. Eventually they made it back to Australia
in the second world war, a dutch ship was camouflaged as an island, and the Japanese forces never found the boat. after the war, the ship was still intact
What about Michiel de Ruyter, raid on the Medway 1667, first use of a marine corps. Burned half the fleet, captured the British flagship Royal Charles and towed it to Zeeland. The ship was too big for Dutch waters and was no more then a nice supply of oak. A piece of stern decoration (Charles II coat of arms) is on display in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.
The Dutch navy actually planned on building 9 dreadnought class battleships just before the first world war. No I am not kidding 9 14 inch armed battleships. In February 1940 the Dutch navy ones again planned to build 3 battlecruiser with 9 280mm guns each, and the ships very much like the German Gneisenau class battlecruisers. Construction had started but 3 months later Germany invaded and construction was ones again halted. In case you're interested World of Warships is adding The Netherlands as an entire country. The cruiser line is already in public test as off June 16th. Have funn
Maybe you kept the thing for the second part, but when it comes to dutch sea culture, it is absolutely mandatory to mention the legend about "Flying Dutchman" !!!
Would like to mention that the dutch navy is responsible for creating marine forces due to the anglo/dutch wars. They also are the inventor of the perescope on submarines.
Netherlands navy? wow thats a bad piece of language Or how you call it, i dont care i hope you understand, It is the dutch navy not the netherlands navy or it is because im nog english, just long live the netherlands
0:10 That is a Spanish NH-90, it is on a Dutch navy ship though. The Spanish and Dutch have been training with each other for a few intensive years now. 1:14 HNLMS Van Speijk (F828), Commisioned on 7 September 1995. Acted up on several actions but last few years mostly working in anti-drugs activities. 1:40 HNLMS Tromp (F803), Commissioned 14 March 2003. A ship that encountered actual war in a limited way during the 2011 Libyan civil war, but mostly used for pirate hunting. You seem to forget about the epic tactics of Admiral de Ruyter, specially the Raid on Medway as the British call it, or in Dutch "Toch naar Chatham". Project 1047 was actually being build, the Germans did produce a single turret just before they invaded the Netherlands during World War 2. If these 8 ships were completed and delivered, they would have caused serious problems for both the Japanese as the Germans. The ships were pretty much Scharnhorst class ships, but better in all ways except the side armor. The guns would have been so fierce that not a single axis ship would have been capable of taking these ships out. Both in range as in firepower. Another thing that seems to be excluded is the seaplane and it's catapult, this would not have been added. Instead it would have received extra guns. The project 1047 ships would have been the worst nightmare for the axis powers, incredibly fast, high firepower and longer distance firepower, small turning circles (much better then the Scharnhorst) and it would have received radar as it was known already by the Dutch. (during the war it would likely have been upgraded as well). Project 1047 would have been the terror on the seas. 8:13 The Walrus class is being replaced by completely new submarines which should start replacing the Walrus class starting 2027. These boats will be named te Orka class possibly (no confirmation on this so far). The new boats will get a hull created by Saab in Sweden and that hull will be transported to the Netherlands where the Dutch will add in the rest. For that matter, the Dutch submarines may be diesel and fairly simple compared to their American counterparts, but they proven on multiple occasions during war games that they can do the job better then any American submarine could. The Dutch have currently the best active submarine force in the world, there may be only 4 active submarines (and several on the docs for training purposes and actually being worked on. Unknown to me is why these are standing there or being worked on, they seem to be Walrus class submarine hulls at least. Total count that I noticed for the same Walrus class hulls would be 10 so far I could see at Den Helder navy base including the current active boats) 9:54 That is the "Batavia", which was NEVER a warship but a merchant ship. Yes it can deal a pretty heavy blow to it's enemies, but it was only armed for defense. The ship that is being build on shore is actually a replica of the "De Zeven Provinciën" of which Admiral de Ruyter was the captain. Unfortunately due to lack of funding the project is pretty much dead in the water. For Admiral Karel Doorman, you may want to look into his history during the war. He did several amazing things which would explain why he is a Dutch naval hero. It isn't just because he went down with his ship.
If we are talking about interesting facts about the royal Netheralnds nacy, I think this one should not be ommited: The Netherlands at the start of WW2 already had a relatively large submarine force, which kept on fighting even after the Dutch capitulation to the germans from Great Britain and in the east indies. The Dutch submarines were equiped with a Dutch invention called a 'snorkel', which is basically a tube that sticks out of the top of the submarine, so it can run its Diesel engines while staying fully submerged, while the submarines form other countries had to surface and were therefore in large danger of being spotted. When the Dutch submarines were stationed in GB, they were refitted to british design, and the snorkels were discarded. However, the German invaders discovered thesm in the Dutch submarine shipyard, and immediately started fitting them them to all their U-boats. The british were really suprised in the beginning of WW2 at the effectiveness of German U-boats, and their ability to stay mostly undetected, and only after rediscovering these Snorkels later in the war, ascribed them as a novel German invention. If only they could have taken lessons from Dutch ship design when it was put right in front of their imperial noses XD.
The Netherlands conquered England in 1688 with the invasion called The Glorious Revolution. William 3 of The Netherlands took possession of the English throne. This is why London is a big city today. William 3 chose to take seat in London and not Amsterdam. The trade centre of the world then moved from Amsterdam to London. If this would not have happened, Amsterdam would now have been a city of millions.
You kinda forgot to mention how one of the 4 Walrus class submarines sunk a US carrier during a NATO exercise in the ninetees. One of the few to have ever done so succesfully during naval exercises. Also the 7 provincien, or 7 provinces, was the flagship of our greatest admiral, Michiel The Ruyter, during the Anglo-Dutch wars. It was named the 7 provinces in reference to the 7 provinces that the Dutch Republic consisted of during the 1600's.
Yea what we call fake news ... For over 70 years now our submarines have a proven 100% hit ratio versus anything remember? You forgot to mention Ocean Venture? One lonely 1960s vintage museumpiece of a Canadian submarine versus a entire US Carrier Battle Group and? Yes it won ... At the exact same time? Our Swordfish sinks the second US CBG. As Commodore Deeks of the RAN Submarine Group informed JCOM? Sir they just slimed all our carriers ... Remember Northern Star? 3 week exercise we were 2 meters below the carrier then popped up on the last day to sink them all. Yea over a dozen of countries subs do it 9 out of 10 times. And yes even the Chilean Navy. Last 2015 RIMPAC a 3+ decade ye old French sub sinks the 2 sub escorts, the carrier and 7 surface ships unseen all the way. But yes you meant to say JTFEX/TMDI99 ... Forgot that? ;-)
raid on the Medway 'Siege of Chathan ' great story, great bunch of courage.Adm. Michiel de Ruyter (well respected, even by enemies) naval tactical mastermind !!known as one of the first succesfull appearances of commando - military - naval - MARNES
A few mistakes in the video. Some boats shown are Belgian Navy (Belgian roundel on NH90 helicopters) and The Netherland was invaded by Germany in May1940. Not February 1940.
If you want to see more and if youre in the netherlands got to this place. Den Helder thats where the navy is and ther is a big museam where you can learn about the royal dutch navy history and todays army i went there its amazing you really should be see that
The Dutch navy is also the only navy in the world to be defeated by horse cavallery, no joke!!!! And sir.. you forgot to mention the Dutch navy oblitterated/humiliated the then indeed most powerfull navy in the world: The British.. by sailing up the Tames, and use the British ships as targetpractice in their own harbour, towing the British flagship out, an stoot it to smitherenes in the Northsea, saving only its stern, and is still kept as one of the most revered Dutch Navy Trpohies today, they lend it to England two years ago, but they got it back to The Netherlands after the celerations..
Hey great video, but im in the dutch navy and you forgot a lot of ships such as the Karel Doorman (Supplier), the mine hunters, and the Lpd's ( johan de wit and the Rotterdam).
In the Guylf Wars in the Persian Gulf, they had Witte de Wit, or Van Heemskerck as the seat of power on the water where Norman Schwatzkopf steered the allied forces from, but all you ever saw from the shore where the U.S Aircraft carriers, shielding it from view and potential Scud rockets from Saddam. Where other navies are great in atacking, Dutch are getting better in defending and communtcation, hence why they used the two Dutch shiops as war headquarters
Well, no. It is highly debatable if Japan even wanted to invade Australia. But even if, the battle of the Java Sea caused such minimal losses to the Japanese, that it would not have made any difference, sadly.
You forgot the time admiral Michiel de ruiter sailed to the naval base of the uk . Sailed trough a very strong chain, burned the english fleet down and took there flagship
1. The dutch citizens dit not fight for their indipendence but for their religion. (Protestant, katholik) katholik regions in the country fougt along the spanish soldiers. 2. In 80 year long war they did not create a ‘navy’ those guys were just fishermen who picked up weapons and terrorised some villages. When the spanish were off guard they claimed the city den Briel. Nice vid mate but the 80 years old war is a little more complicated than just discribed. Keep going with these videos
Also added to my previous comment, there are new ships being developed aside the replacement for the Walrus class submarines. In the coming 40 years there are brand new ships being launched and the Dutch royal navy will obtain a lot more then they currently have. Also a lot of different types are being worked on for that matter. - Last 2 M-Frigates will be replaced, the first should be operational in 2025 - Alkmaar class ships will ALL be replaced by mostly autonomous ships that will be controllable from shore and manned ship to include their search for modern sea mines. These ships should enter service starting from 2025 up to 2030. - Combat Support Ship "Den Helder" will be smaller then the JSS Karel Doorman, but would likely have a similar task www.defensie.nl/organisatie/marine/nieuws/2018/11/09/combat-support-ship-den-helder-nieuwste-marineschip This is only the start, there is much more to come in coming years.
Hi awesome video! Look ad that handsome me @ 08:01 Some small corrections. The Hr Ms Victory isn’t active anymore. Its an museum ship in Portsmouth. Plus the tradition throwing shoes overboard isn’t completely correct. It can be done when an officer attend the Submarine Command Course and it is his last yourney as an XO. Which I have seen only once in 10 years. So I am very interested how you got this “fact”
In 1999 during the JTFEX / TMDI99 exercise the submarine Zr.Ms. Walrus "sank" the USS Theodore Roosevelt and 7 other ships and got away with it. Now that's a incredible fact
To be precise the Dutch Navy is 530 years old . The Royal Netherlands Marine core which is part of the Navy was est. Sept 10.. 1665 . making it one of the oldest marine cores in the world
Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding supplier for The Royal Netherlands Navy. Location: Vlissingen province Zeeland ( luctor et emergo) birthplace : admiral Michiel de ruyter.
Muffin Z The Friesland-class destroyers were built for the Royal Netherlands Navy in the 1950s. They were a larger modified version of the Holland class with more powerful machinery. Eight ships were built.
In the 1600dres there were 3 wars between England and Holland, Holland won two and England won one, not bad for a Nation that could not put any people in Australia, because they hardly had any to cover the Netherlands.
You sure? 1st war we both agreed to end it as it was costing too much. Which didn't stop the english from begging us to join their commonwealth. 2nd war we won. 3rd war we won. 4th war we didn't fight england but the uk
The Dutch doesn’t have any destroyers! If you look at a ship of the De Zeven Provinciën class you will find a number on the bow. The number is always F80... (except from the HNLMS Van Speijk F828) The F stand for Frigate not destroyer! And yes I would want to serve for the Dutch navy! Only five years and you will find me on one of those ship!
Small fact the Dutch and Belgian navy choose to buy and develp new frigates together and minesweepers. The plan is to merge the two navies together forming one big navy in the near future
You also forgot the Dutch Navy that later sank the entire English fleet since their ships were outdated and that since then the Dutch and Enlish are allies, since the UK's defeat back then i part of the Dutch Kingdom, meaning, divided they fall, however if they unite they have the most powerful navy in the world.
It's so sad that Americans still can't pronounce any word/name from another language without making it sound stupidly American. "Kowning Durr Ney-durr-landun".. urgh. Sounds horrible to hear as a Dutch person.
@@FtdFacts Where's the insult in his comment then? And tbh; he's right! People from Anglo Saxon countries have terrible pronunciation of foreign names and words. Then again the Germans don't do much better and neither do the French, but they refuse to just even try, the stubborn bastards. But the Dutch speak 4 languages on average and they smoke weed & drink Heineken all day long... go figure.
@DreadX10 spot on hahaha.. To all none Dutch people; Den Helder is our one and only naval base.. (at least for the European part.. we have also naval bases in the Caribbean with naval base Parera in Willemstad as HQ.) So to say Den Helder 'it's very big' is a kinda ironic if it's the only one. And also considering the enormous amount of loss in budget.. and ships and submarines we've sold. The pride of our navy is already long gone. So next think twice before you say something. And think where we are on the list of biggest naval bases. Some kind of moderation is in place here. But there I wanna mention also that I respect and admire all the men and women serving in our entire armed forces.. and that they are doing a good job. Despite all the bad political decisions that has been made the last decade.
Leslie B dikke?
You failed to mention, in 1688, the Dutch Navy sailing all the way up the Themes to London, invading England and capturing the King of Britain. Just saying.
