That 40-car pileup is scary not for its size, but for the insane speeds people were driving at in obviously lousy & slippery conditions. Many years ago, during "snowmageddon" in the Washington, DC metro area, my job required me to be on the Beltway the morning after the snow finally stopped falling. I was the only vehicle moving on the road, and I stayed near the center of the roadway (in part to avoid all the stopped cars buried along both sides). Some idiot in a pickup came racing up behind me, then tailgated me for a couple of miles, occasionally flashing his lights. He finally decided to use the massive expanse of open area on either side of me to go around, and disappeared -- fishtailing heavily -- into the distance. Some people just turn off their brains while driving in the snow. SLOW DOWN.

Funny that you suggest trains should have these emergency lanes because they actually started on the railroad, specifically the Saluda Grade. On that track unless an operator determined that you were going slowly enough to switch you to the main line, your train went to the emergency lane. The tracks there were so steep that the emergency track was the default. Those tracks still exist but are no longer used.

So. That angled plow formation is called a ‘slow tortoise’. And I love them! Muscle memory kicked in when the mall closed for a blizzard, and I was headed home. Got on the highway. Right as a tortoise was going by! I stayed behind them, since my little Corolla would have gotten stuck otherwise. My dad’s Camry did get stuck… two hundred feet from the house, at the bottom of a hill. I came down the hill, and was able to safely park in my spot. My car died a few weeks later in a catastrophic hailstorm

Runaway Truck Ramps are not designed to save the truck. Very often the truck (semi-truck, lorry) using it is damaged beyond repair. The point of the ramp is to save the lives of the other drivers around or down the hill that could be struck and killed by the out of control truck.

Slowdown escape lanes is an amazing thing, my uncle is a trucker and once told me if those lanes did not exisists he would have been done for , he had lost his brakes and was barelling down the side of a mountain in germany at around 85 km/h which does not sound of much but in a truck it is scary af, as he panicked more and more he saw his chance coming up an escape lane which thankfully stopped him dead in his tracks less than 100 meters in.

It was caught on a warehouses' parking lot security camera that also happened to overlook the exit ramp. I used to live in that area and go back to visit most years. We then jacked it up and put the spare on the tire that had gone flat at the time of the rollover and drove off. Except for a few dents, the pickup was fine. I often wonder if some people are actually born stupid or really have to work hard at it. Looking at that second clip of one or two drivers travelling at such ludicrous speeds in icy conditions make me wonder if there as a class of "sub stupid". It is heartbreaking to see casualties who managed to stop safely only to be smacked up the rear by an irresponsible idiot. We used to show photographic slide shows to new recruits of multivehicle accidents but even I had a hard time watching it. Nothing, absolutely nothing can prepare you for some of the horrific sights you see but I wish we could have shown some of these to such offenders and see if they had any effect.

Back in 1991, on a nearby Interstate there was a 50-car pileup. I was almost in it, I was a couple of miles back. It was cold and blowing snow, but there wasnt much on the road. But it was kinda icy. As I went under an overpass I noticed a string of cars on the right shoulder coming back the wrong and going off an on ramp. I didnt bother to go up and see what the problem was, I just turned around and joined the train. Later found out about the pileup, although when I passed the next intersection via surface streets and there was NO traffic on that lane, I kinda guessed what was up. Apparently there was a momentary white and they were all completely blinded; the people in front slowed down, but someone in back figured "punch it and get through more quickly".

Also, the most horrific thing I've seen here in the U.K. was when the Polish man was in his HGV texting and he didn't realise before it was too late, that he was going to crash into and run over the car in front. What followed was too awful to talk about. Those poor people.

5:23 when they lose their brakes ... usually after a very long down hill of braking

When I drove a tow truck, drivers who ended up losing brakes on mountain hills mostly told me that they were behind schedule and hadn't gear down to slow down earlier. Might not have been the story that the drivers gave to the cops, but figured they had to confess to someone.

I have to fast forward those icy moments. Just creates too much anxiety watching cars crash on snowy roads.

6:52 No, they're not. You're showing Ласточка train, that mostly used in Moscow Central Circle. Their normal speed is 90 km/h nealry all the time, while in Moscow subway trains go 60 km/h occasionally speeding up to 70-75 km/h.

I left work when customer said it was misting outside. We'd been watching the weather. By the time I got to the edge of town, 4 miles away, it was getting a little slick, got on highway 50, I was going 45, with in a couple miles was seeing cars, trucks off on both side of the 4 lane divided highway. Black Ice , dropped speed to 35, some were going around but only a few much faster, wreck ahead slowed everyone cept the idiot coming up behind he lost it went off into medium, back up and just barely missed my bumper before he went back in the left lane .
