I worked as a crane tech for years and a load test is done every four years on any crane over a five ton load limit. The test is done with a known weight if 125% of the working load limit picked up and has to hold that load with no creep for one minute. We had the contract that inspected the gantry crane that lifted the space shuttle to load it onto the 747 if it were to land at Edwards in Ca. It always had to be ready. We also did SeaLaunch in Long Beach before it went to Russia permanently. It loaded rockets for space onto a converted oil rig.

The cruise ship "almost hitting the bridge" was an optical illusion. I was in the Navy stationed in Charleston, SC. We used to have to pass under the Cooper River Bridge on our way out to sea. We would tell the new guys to go up on the signal bridge and crank down the mast so we wouldn't hit the bridge. Standing on the deck of the ship, it honestly looked like we would hit it but the fact was, there was more than enough room to clear it. (There was no way to "crank down the mast")

@@u1zha they don’t though… Most trailers actually sit a little higher when they’re loaded because the airbags compensate to get the weight off the helpers, up until about 38-40k lbs they sink a tiny bit. Plus car haulers are usually pretty light. If you have 8 cars on it it’ll only be about 25k-30k lbs. the trailers themselves are pretty heavy so they can’t haul a whole lot, weight-wise. If anything it’ll be like 1/2” lower, a dry van with 46k lbs sits about that much lower than empty. It would’ve gotten stuck regardless of the weight

I’m thinking way back in a mechanical drafting school when 1 of our 2 teachers put a challenge project for us to draw out a farm tractors field portable light weight jack that is stable enough,strong enough and safe to be used in the field by one person. Thus why in you bringing up the subject of car haulers getting stuck over railroad crossings….to come up with a solution in somehow fabricating hydraulics connected to the wheel axles to raise the entire framework during those crossings…nothing extreme but inches only.
@Fetidaf
@Fetidaf 10 месяцев назад
@@vasquezalfred they’ve already got air bags, could have some secondary ones that are bigger or ones that push up a bit more… would definitely be easier to retrofit that than a hydraulic Jack of sorts… i think you’re on to something though.

The crane test was kinda awesome when you realise that it was exactly the reason for said tests - better in harbour than on a rig. Also, I remember years back when I was hitch-hiking I talked to a truck driver and he straight up said, there's nothing on the roads he's afraid of, except for trams and trains. Even if they're slow, the will just plow through you without batting an eye.

We the Truck drivers are taught to make sure to have the trailer high enough but also to make sure your landing gear doesn't get stuck on the tracks. Obviously, he does not know how to take care of his truck.
@jus10lewissr
@jus10lewissr 2 месяца назад
The car hauler got stuck because of how low the trailer is. It had very little ground clearance and once the semi got up over the tracks and started to come back down, the trailer immediately bottomed out on the hump and there was literally no way of moving it at that point.

9:33 Train wreck, the truck getting stuck in this situation is a pretty common occurrence when a low profile truck attempts to cross risen tracks, the only downside in this situation was that a train ended up approaching. Always remember that if your stuck on tracks in any vehicle similar to this truck, the train crossing lights usually have a phone number and crossing number, call them immediately to notify them so they can stop any approaching trains.
