By the Cross oor Andrew bore, by the sword oor William wore, by the Crown oor Robert swore - tae win oor Liberty! What a heritage and tapestry we have -lets start knowing who we are again and building on that knowledge.
I'm from Japan, and I'm a man who identifies himself with Scottish people. Because I was born in the northeastern region of Japan, where is similar to Scotland. And my fathers had been persecuted by "central" Japanese traditionally, like Scots were. So I say 「けっぱれ」...means "Furray" by our dialect...for Scotland. She and her people may be free!
The blending of small pies and harmonica on this very moving song is an inspiration. James Radcliffe is a hero of mine. A film should be made of how he was honour bound to follow the Jacobites. He should never have been decapitated and would not have been had he denounced his catholic faith. He was an aristocrat and the King did not really want him executed. He was loved in the local Corbridge community, unusual for being a landlord. When the crown conviscated his manor after his death, the local workers refused to demolish it. When his body was brought back to Northumberland to be buried in the family grave, there was a spectacular display of the Northern Lights, with crimson being the dominant colour. The local people refer to any subsequent displays as Derwentwater's Lights.Ann Snowdon wrote a fascinating book about the Radcliffe brothers. If anyone likes this song then I implore them to research the origins. I had no knowledge of the 1915 Jacobite Rebellion until I heard the Corries singing this song.Thank you Corries for enlightening me with your most moving interpretation of it.
By the cross oor St. Andrew bore By the sword oor William wore By the croon oor Robert swore Tae win oor Liberty Ca' the falcon frae the glen Ca' the eagle frae the ben Ca' the lion frae his den Tae win oor Liberty By the man wha's faith was old By the man they sold for gold By the man they'll never hold Tae win oor Liberty Ca' the thieves o' Liddesdale Ca' the sprears of Annandale Ca' the brave o' Yarrowvale Tae win oor Liberty By the arm that bends the bow By the arm that plies the blow By the arm that lays them low Tae win oor Liberty Ca' the banners frae the west Ca' the raven frae his nest Ca' the clans that dance the best Tae win oor Liberty By the field that once was green By the shield that's silver sheen By the sword in battle keen Tae win oor Liberty Bless the man wha's faith we hold Bless the man in chains they sold Bless the man in cloth o' gold Wha' won oor Liberty
By the cross our Andrew bore by the sword our William wore By the crown our Robert swore to win our Liberty Call the falcon from the glen call the eagle from the bend Call the lion from his den to win our Liberty
Makes you wonder if those who died to keep Scotland free for centuries could see the indecision today about whether or not to simply vote for freedom, what would they think?
To BillDFC--Oh that is so funny! I love Bonnie Dundee--only think of the joy of being such a pain in the lneck that the provost says, let him go--we're well rid if the bugger! And then there are "the bells (that) rung backwards"--was anything ever so beautiful?
My uncle wrote this song George weir. Married to my aunty Margaret Alexander. My grandad was Joseph son and daughter of a war hero from from Princess Street Edinburgh. I love Scotland more than England even tho I have never been. I guess its in my blood. I love Scotland.
@wallace500001 Nae it scares me not, those who it scares are those whose arrogance and contempt matches the ignorance by which they act. I talk of course of Parliament. I for one believe that Scotland's independence will only bring strength, after all if people seek freedom, then freedom should be awarded. I cannot help tho feel a little sad, but that perhaps has more to do with the way I was brought up, I believe and always have believed that there is strength in unity~
Scotland will be free when she unites as one people and puts away the fears of what will come when she again is independent. Recall the past glories while moving with purpose towards a brighter future and take back her destiny! Alba gu Brath from a Knox of Clan MacFarlane. Loch Sloy!
Masri really Scottish nation. Its one thing for native Scottish people to hate England, but for foreigners who aren't Scottish to hate England, na, you can do one.
Scotland does not beleive in English rule . The last election showed that if you can count. The people in Scotland are not stupid. Thet can see where their future lies best. Not paying their wages to prop up English and other banks , but , more simply put, to help ourselves. It's begun to happen of course , that what scares the english. ALBA .
And I respect yours too, 'cause I too have protestant friends. I also agree on your second point, but religion is the hearth of everything. Perhaps one day, love may unite all of us christians.
I agree vary well said, and the same with ireland I fear. we do need our leaders to rember that the price of war. is that for every man killed are mamed it is two less hands to work the fields or the factorys, or the traids it is the working ppl that get things done.
An interesting point of view friend but I am protestant and I have no problem working alongside my friends and colleagues who are Catholics. No, the issue cannot be decided on religion alone but on all things in total and a unity of purpose shared by all for a common future. I respect your viewpoint and your expression of it.
I have just read your comments....long live Nippon.. I being Scottish do respect your warrior spirit...thanks You mentioned being persecuted by other japanese....what about China? I hope all is well with you, peace be with you
I am sorry for my ignorance - but please answer my query- While I contributed to the cause - I am far away in America an dinna know what has been happening in Scotland
@rosswatt1979 You have a point there about Charlie and I agree he would have done much the same as previous Stuart monarchs. Our real heroes were BRUCE,WALLACE, ANDREW De MORAY, THE DOUGLAS and the thousands of patriots who fought and died with them.
I think much more than the average inmigrants on every country. (As individuals). I don't think he was made Patron-Saint of Scotland for nothing, don't you agree?
Probably my favorite Corries tune. I haven't heard this particular version, and it's a bit jarring to hear the same voices at ... the wrong pacing. I prefer the rising tempo of the album version. Still good though. Up the Celtic! And the Rangers, too. :p
It will be free only when she re - embraces it's catholic roots. Was the martyrdom of St. Andrew's in vain? One people, one faith, one nation, ONE WILL. For Scotland, from somebody who admires it.
