Selling maryland iam from south los Angeles just moved down here 2months ago in the Ocean city area it looks like long beach down here 💪 feels and look just like home
There is a deeper reason why we are called The Old Line State. All the other troops were being repelled by The British but not Maryland. This got George Washington's attention. Our First Founding Father said "You held the line." It is humbling and an honor that George Washington is the one who gave us our nickname.
Another reason for being called the Old Line State is that while still a colony, about 1700, Maryland had a big border dispute with its neighbor, Pennsylvania. The then king of England dispatched two surveyors by the names of Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon, to set the border between the two colonies. It became known as the Mason and Dixon line, or simply the Mason-Dixon line.
I knew all of them. But, of course, I was an 18-year-old senior in high school when the Colts left town. Also, I grew up fishing, crabbing, and clamming in the Chesapeake Bay, the various bays behind the barrier islands, and also in the Atlantic itself. In addition to that, I had a few fantastic history teachers along the way. ;) I enjoy your videos!
My favorite fact is that Philadelphia was built on Maryland's original land grant. Unfortunately, for Maryland, the Penn family was in better graces with the Crown than the Calverts. This dispute led to Mason & Dixon's survey. Also, the Mason Dixon line is not only Maryland's northern border, but also it's eastern border as well.
I didn't know about the scallops or the exact coat-of-arms but I have always guessed it had to do with Lord Baltimore. As for the 38 % of MD crab cakes having foreign crab, I would have guessed more. Sad to say, most of the restaurants on the Eastern Shore import crab, even from Venezuela. For instance, my sons, fishing about five years ago near where several restaurants are located, spied a crab delivery truck filled with Venezuelan crab. The restaurant industry is very cost-conscious and going with cheaper crab meat helps the bottom line. Eaters plunking down $ 30+ for a couple of what they think are Maryland crab cakes are often getting foreign crab cakes cooked Maryland style. The Old Line Regiment, which saved Washington's army at Brooklyn, are the greatest heroes in Maryland history, completely unsung. Bayonet-charging a much large British foe, their casualty rate was over ninety percent. Maryland's Old Line saved the country.
I got 9 out 10. Did you know the Potomac River was Birthday gift exchanged between Lord Calvert and Lord Baltimore ? (I can't remember the order of who gave the Potomac as a gift). Also that Smith Island on the Chesapeake Bay is home of a vanishing dialect that I was told by my grandparents was called "Backwards Talking " and also Smith Island is sinking into the Bay? Cool video. I have more info lol PG County Native
William Henry Harrison was nominated for President at the first convention of hte Whig Party, which was held at the Canton racetrack in the Canton section of Baltimore. Daniel Webster and Henry Clay spoke at the convention.
Hi. Question: have you considered or did a video about Maryland's part in the war of 1812 (from the British landing and marching from Fort Howard culminating with Fort McHenry)?
Worked with Associates Relocation (now Prudential Relocation) in Washington, D.C. While Maryland has one of the highest property values as well as highest cost of living, we often got homeowners from many places with a low - mid cost of living, often with beautiful homes on acreage, relocating to Maryland area. House hunting alone was very traumatic as their homes would appraise for just over half of what homes in the metro area appraised. More agonizing, upon finding comparably priced homes as their own homes, they would be upset that their commute would be over an hour.
My second favorite is, thoroughbred breeding started in America at Belair Stud in Collington, when Benjamin Tasker Jr. imported Selima, also known as the Gondolphin Mare from England
Really fine information. I knew most of this but..... You should include the battle of North Point as a forgotten element of the War of 1812. Also, we Marylanders helped drive the British out of North/South Carolinas at the battles of Cowpens and Guilford Courthouse. Regards, Guilford Queen. My family has been here since before the Revolutionary War. Regards
knew quite a bit, the Baltimore Colts & when they left ( we were in disbelief, the haunted Torsk, but did not know about that Maryland Crab Cakes not coming from Maryland! Treason!!!
Maryland was the 13th state in the union because they wouldn’t sign without access to what is now Western Maryland, this gave Maryland access to the Apps minerals as well as the Mississippi River via the C&O Canal.
I live in Maryland for 14 years and I’m 14 and I knew about 10,and 8 I hurt for 1 crab cakes are my favorite food other than crabs and I just ate crabs that my aunt and uncle caught and they were at least 9 inches
The only ones I didn’t know wete #10 and #1. I used to live and teach in Maryland for over 20 years. I talk about it a lot with my students in my current state. They asked me to give them more information about it. So, I will post this in Google Classroom for them.
I knew those facts about Maryland considering I was born and raised here in Maryland. The only thing I like about it is Ocean City. I'm sure gonna miss Maryland when I move away in a year or two. But at least I can always come back and visit my family and friends.
Yes I have fished the Chesapeake Bay for 50 yrs. And I really can't imagine some of the fish I have pulled out of the Chesapeake Bay. Non-native fish not from Maryland Waters. it has made me wonder how many different species are in the bay that we don't even know about.
I live in Maryland and I was born and always lived here but some places there’s bull sharks too! And I live near OC and I love Assateague island and I’m gonna visit Chincoteague Island by kayak! My last fact is that surprising not all Marylanders like crabs and seafood take me for example I can’t stand the taste of crab and shrimp.
You probaly didnt know the largest city in Maryland, which is Baltimore, population 500k people, experience 300 plus homicides,700 drug overdose deaths every year for past 5 decades..Could you imagine the city of Boston experiencing such horrors every year???
The name “Mary Land” was a tribute to the Virgin Mary … and a very Catholic queen, Henrietta Maria. Maryland was founded by Catholic convert, Lord Baltimore, to provide a haven for the persecuted Catholics of 17th-century Great Britain and Ireland. Lord Baltimore was a well-known Catholic whose family’s services to two kings had given him room for religious maneuvering. His intentions for Mary Land were more than commercial. He had selected it as a refuge, and it couldn’t have had a better name. Not only did the new province pay indirect tribute to the Mother of God, who was disapproved of in Protestant England, it was also a reference to a very Catholic queen.
One of the first things I taught our pre-school-aged children to say, when hearing the words “the Colts” was: “those no good, dirty rotten, low down, yellow bellied, lily livered cowards who snuck out of town in the middle of the night!” 🤣🤣🤣
I've seen sharks down there and yes my granddad is still pissed about the cults and Virginia got there land back not to mention the whole Delaware issue
I already know that there sharks in the bay plus up the river past Dundalk marine terminal oh, I was operating the barge crane at the East End of the terminal and I saw one briefly out of the water I can't tell what kind of shark it was but it was a sharp
Went to a crab restaurant this past summer near Annapolis and they told me they got their crabs from the Gulf because of the bacteria in the Chesapeake Bay. I was surprised as MD blues are the best!
Well the colts did it a messed up way just leaving in the middle of the night without saying a word. And also before the ravens we had a Canadian football league team called the stallions. I went to many stallions games.
I knew that both Virginia and Maryland had given land to create Our Nation's Capital but I did not know that Virginia took it back. However, it does make sense in retrospect since we were heading to Civil War.
