Love 2:00, I personally struggle with "digital minimalism", great tips on inbox 0, had to smash the like button!

Thanks! Digital minimalism is quite tricky because it’s so hard to hoard in a digital space. I have plenty of videos on the subject because it intrigues me so much.

Been meaning to watch this for the last week. I’ve been doing some rethinking about how I try to organize and think about my to-do lists. I had a feeling this video would be good for that, and it is. I took notes of the 10 points from this video so I can look through the list (and copied a link to this video in my notes). 1. Consistent routines is exactly what I was thinking of doing. More on that later. 2. Speaking of emails, I have 65,000 unread but I mostly don’t even look at it unless I am looking for something. 9. Tidy as you go. So the main new realization I just had was to think about spending my time on either preparing for the next day (or days) by following a consistent routine where all those things have a purpose related to the future. If/when you are ahead on everything, then that should leave time to enjoyably do hobbies or (10) doing less. Earlier, I was thinking about how doing something (cooking) creates more work which might get deferred to later (making the todo list even longer, or leaving it dirty until you need it again). That makes me want to do less. However if you think of it as preparing for the future and creating free time later and making things easier for your future self, then in makes sense to do it sooner (do more of that type of thing), and having a checklist to make sure you keep up with everything that is good to have ready for the future. And hobbies or whatever can go back to being something without a specific purpose except fun (like board games!), that can be mentally divided from the things that need to be handled or eliminated. It seems like a great framework that fits in with the rest of the list for organizing and working on things efficiently. Get rid of files/email/etc that doesn’t have any further purpose. If something is part of preparation, prepare now and get it organized and out of the way.

Oh the digital clutter is real here. In my process I found some guru that said to store everything digitally because it takes no space, and don't worry about decluttering it (or not making a priority anyhow) because an inbox with zero and an inbox with 5k doesn't impact your life physically. And boy I took that to heart. Tidy as you go not only becomes easier as you do it, I found it became something I don't even notice I'm doing. It feels unnatural not to. "Eat the rice, wash the bowl". Things are a process and you aren't finished with the 'thing' until you complete the process. You are so right, space in your schedule is just as important as physical space in your world. It only took me 50 years to learn this. I take breaks from things just to cleanse my mental palate. Like recently, I realized I was binging self help info and was becoming numb to it, not implementing anything, just consuming. On the path to being mindful I slipped into mindlessness. Thanks for being specific with your tips...people tell you to budget or digitally declutter but are often so vague, those of us that are newbies to the concept need a place to start.

Ellen, I so appreciate all that you’ve said. I love that you mentioned everything is a process and you’re not finished until you complete it. So well said. ^_^ And I agree that most videos are too vague. I noticed that when I was watching minimalist content as a beginner and I was like “what? They’ve moved on to another tip? But they haven’t finished explaining this one!”

I am starting to think, instead of cleaning the bowl being the end of the “eat rice” process, maybe it’s the beginning of the “have clean dishes ready tomorrow” process. If that makes sense.

@@drivers99 Yes, I suppose it does come full circle. It was a real attitude shift, many years ago, when I started thinking of my future self as a separate person I was either hurting or helping with my present actions. It makes it easier for me to make wiser decisions.

@@drivers99 Oh my goodness, this is pure genius!! I believe this would help so many people change their perspective. Especially my partner, who is not quite neurotypical. Thanks, Don!
