I dispose of and replace my tires, brake pads, pedals, chain, cassette and all lines after each single ride. I learned this technique from a company that sells parts….

At 5:37 you removed the chain. Why not from the start, remove the chain? Drop your chain into a solvent and agitate it a bit. Before placing the chain back on the bike, you can stretch out the chain, then evenly apply the oil. The jockey wheels, cassette and chainring would be easier to access for cleaning. You would't need to buy a chain cleaning device.

Rather than creating all that metal waste by changing a quick link once a week, I run the degreaser in the chain bath, let it sit, clean the rest of the bike, then fill the chain bath with water or bike cleaner and run it through with that to wash off all the degreaser. 👍

For the longest time I thought that that (and other) chain cleaning contraption was just a gimmick.... But the last dry season was super tough and I got one (Park Tool).... Best tool purchase ever. If you ride every day at a climate where muck happens every day. Well... get one. BTW, I just run dishwasher soap in it. Hose it down. Dry. Lube. Done...

Just did mine a few days ago, filthy job, always was, still is !🤠 I have a chain cleaner or two, never gets it all off, end up wasting time brushing off black residue until finally it's clean 😀 Try to dry it to find that it looked clean but is in fact still oozing black stuff, more cleaner, more brushing, get sick of the entire pain in the arse operation, use up more old pairs of pants trying to dry it, finally lube it, leaving it hanging over plastic pot to drain off. Refitted it, by now I've got sick of being covered in lube or wearing rubber gloves ( on/off, on/off ) use checker to find that the chains knackered so need to get a new one and a cassette and chain ring rendering all but the last bit entirely pointless and with a much lighter wallet. Another good job done, an entire day wasted and remembering how I meant to get The Nexus hub and surely a belt drive would remove the entire crappy operation?🤣🤣

Before and after every ride seems a bit much though. Especially with the process you go through. I never remove my chain unless I'm putting on a new chain. Just clean it with the chain cleaner, wipe it dry with some shop towels, then lube. And I spin my chain way quicker than that. I'm too eager to get out and ride I guess.

I have some water / citric acid / bicarb mixture I use to fill up that chain bath - pop some regular wash in the top to drop feed through and the grime usually comes off first time. Dry it off with a rag and apply the lube. Can't be bothered to take the chain off especially If you need a new quick link each time (news to me). Three minutes and done.

It’s cheaper, easier and far less messy simply not touching your bike and putting it in the bike shop 4 times a year for a service. A quick wash down after each ride with a garden hose and a little lube is all you need between services. Muc off is silly money and in my job I have far better things to spend my free time on…….like riding the bike.

I use parafin wax with PTFE will never go back to greasy oils again, just rinse with hot water when finished my ride then redid chain into the slow cooker wax bath- sorted, silky smooth

you should backpedal the crank when you are using this chaincleaner, yes i know you cant do that on a e-bike, you simply use a ziptie to connect the crankarm to the chainwheel😊

Genuine question from an aged newbie. What about using motorcycle chain lube or chainsaw oil? Presumably heavy duty so good for ebikes, and non-fling formula. I await enlightenment.
@ActivewheelsMerthyr

If you are taking off the chain it’s probably better to soak it in a container with degreaser off the bike. I’ve started using wax based lube which is working well and the chain and other parts don’t get as dirty.
@mallias2683
@mallias2683 2 года назад
Wax lube is amazing. The trick is to fully de grease the chain before start using it. Especially a new chain that comes lubed from the factory. After that you can clean everything easy with only water.

Where do you get those quick links from ? If you have a shimano chain are there different quick links for each type of chain ? I clean mine on the bike but my OCD so wants me to remove it and give it good wash down. Thx

As a chainsaw user a way to extend the life of the sprocket is to swap out chains during daily maintenance, after sharpening. That way the chains and sprocket wore out at a similar time. So two/three chains per sprocket. As bike chains and cassettes wear too it may work with running two chains. The freshly cleaned chain will have time to dry that way too.

can you successfully wash your cloth? Or is it being used a few times and then thrown away?
@tigermint69
@tigermint69 2 года назад
I pop my microfibre cloth in the washing machine (be sure NOT to use any conditioner) and the come out fine - also, best not try it with other items, for fear of oil/ dirty cross contamination… but use the short wash cycle and it’s not to harmful to the wallet to run a wash just for some dirty rags

I stop off at the local jet wash on the way home I recommend 1-4-5. 2 minutes a bike with hot wax finish. Job done. £1 The money that save me money over buying all these products and as we always do the same wash we are getting better life out of our kit...

Sooo... clean the chain every ride, then wash it under the tap and replace the quick link? Couldn't you simply use a hose or a bucket of water? Also, if applying lube to the "bottom" of the chain, what happens to it when it circles to the "top"? In addition, if the lube is a liquid which "drips off" the chain, and you're applying it to the rollers (top or bottom), wouldn't that mean it's already between the roller contact points prior to your moving it... (unless you're spinning it at incredibly high speeds which would seem impractical) are you suggesting that it only ever gets half way in? Finally, why wasn't the chain being spun be backwards using that special tool at the beginning? Sorry, lots of questions.

It is not necessary to clean the chain after every ride. Also, it's not necessary to remove the chain after every cleaning! Inspect the chain, get a chain-checker. Replace the chain when the chain-checker indicates.
@embn
@embn 2 года назад
Hi Steven! When Chris ran the chain underwater, that would simulate you spraying your bike down with a hose outdoors. It's not essential to take the chain off every time! Putting lube on the bottom of the chain is best as lube won't drip as much and will lubricate the other contact points better (for example, the cassette and chainring). Having the crank tool is useful, however we displayed how it's done without the crank tool. Hope this clears everything up! 👍

Your using the chain cleaner tool backwards because you can’t use the mucoff ebike pedal backwards tool on all bikes , another way it to flip the machine round and not use the handle which is what I do , also your chainring was still filthy after you cleaned the chain which seems daft

Every time they promote Muc Off products EMBN looses a bit more credibility. I’ve been happily using a old worn out Allen key to lock off my pedals, a twig could do exactly the same thing. WTF would I spend more money on a overpriced tool that I don’t need? Why?
@claw7854
@claw7854 2 года назад
this is the first video of the gmbn community that i totally disagree. u dont need to replace ur chain lock always, neither do u actually need to remove it. just be precise when drying it and why do u take so long to lube, just give it a spin and hold down the lube so it will drip. and why didnt u clean ur chainring properly? probably the rear neither... I do cleaning like this (actually with all the stuff percisly cleaned) once a year, when i make a full dismantle and rebuild for a master clean. but before barely every ride i clean my chain and lube it. takes me less than half the time watching this video. not satisfied this time!
