Why didn't you attach the bottom the other way so that you didn't have to use so much PVC to catch the eggs and the natural fold stopping them?

I had a bunch of 1” shelving that I bought a Habitat for humanity for only $20👀 yup so, I built the cage 80” long and I had some leftover 1/2” hardware cloth. I put inside on the floor then, wrapped the outside as best as possible to help keep rodents n such out but still allowing access. I’ve seen other pictures where a rat chewed through some hardware cloth but have never experienced that myself. Thanks for the great videos

Preditory proof? We just lost all but one set of breeders to something big. Not sure what, but our cages were totally distroyed, and the Quail strewened all over the yard. If whatever it was, it just ran through like a mack truck. Didn't eat any of the birds. I'm still feeling like a bad bird mom. We heard nothing and they were inside the garage.

I have used this design for a couple months now. Problem 1 quail still end up falling on the bottom as the legs drop through. The second issue is the quail seem more disturbed by opening the hutch. I actually designed a pin to keep the hutch doors secure then predators managed to kill 7 more quail. The doors were just as easy to push in as pull out. I used two bungee to span from ends to center door allowing them to open when the pin is removed but prevent the doors being pushed. I have managed to keep the rest of the quail but they still drop through the bottom rack entirely too much. I fear more quail being hurt by this design. Everything works well except the floor design.
@squarecountyhomestead
@squarecountyhomestead 27 дней назад
You’re using 1/2” for the floor? I’ve never had any quail fall though.
@Wiretalker
@Wiretalker 26 дней назад
@@squarecountyhomestead yes not out just through legs but they hit the bottom hard. I reduced the gap and the angle of the floor did not help. I had one of the quail do this and break its wing. If it was one quail I would just say it’s a fluke. It is all of the quail missing a rung or not able to maintain a grip. I have decent sized Coturnix.
@Wiretalker
@Wiretalker 26 дней назад
I am updating today July 27 24. I have lost my 5th bird to this design. The bird fell and got trapped in the front resulting in breaking its leg. Happened after morning check and evening check. I was in the yard there were no predators present. It was one of my largest birds. I really had high hopes for this design but I am going to build a traditional hutch. I have the more expensive black Coturnix quail so having a 4th of my birds injured or killed by an avoidable issue is catastrophic. Not to mention expensive. Another note I have had no eggs since using this design and it’s now been 3 months in this environment. I truly do not know how you’re not having injuries to birds. I bought the bottom rack just for this project so I lost that money. Eggs were 6 bucks a piece. Raised them from babies and all loss has been related to this design. It’s inhumane
