Welcome back to it! 3rd time!?! That's some bad luck. Just take it easy with your recovery, you don't want to impede your ability to fight off any future exposure to it!
Hope you like it! They're not as big and intense as the main sessions I have up here of course, but not everyone can manage them, so I really hope this series works for some people.
3x5min then 3x7min. Today was first of 10-yes I plan to do 3! Found the high stroke rate gassed me but managed to complete. Very happy that I am making progress back. Thx so much for the videos
Thank for the series. Helping me recover from a wonky ankle I broke 12 years ago. Had been getting a lot of stiffness. John, not sure if you’ve read up on Covid and antihistamines to clear congestion in lungs. Interesting stuff if you haven’t read about it.
First row post enforced stop then Covid! Incredible how much conditioning I’ve lost, from doing HM for fun to gasping like a landed fish, in just 5 weeks. Thanks for these sessions John and your welcome advice to take things easy on the recovery. Definitely going to follow that wisdom over the course of the next couple of weeks.
Things are progressing nicely over here. Felt good on the 28's I think maybe one more day of ten minute row and then on to a few bottom tier rows with rests though. til next time we row John, thanks for all that you do for us. HAPPY NEW YEAR.
I am following this series having installed my first Concept2 a few days ago and absolutely loving it. The very clear guidance is helping me focus on technique and I understand how important that is. Fortunately I do not know what pace is “good” so I’m managing not to become obsessed with performance at the moment which is helping me build up slowly. Really looking forward to each session and think I have found a discipline that I will enjoy for many years. Awesome stuff, thanks John.
You know, I've never considered how that could help. Not knowing what other people are doing will make your initial development a lot smoother, as you won't have your ego telling you that you should be going faster. So for the time being, you're lucky that you can just look at your current pace, the amount of time you can row for, how it feels etc - and use that to know you're improving (and hopefully enjoying) rowing. Any questions, just ask.
Strength feeling okay, still short of breath and ended up coughing. Not pushing too hard, looking to build up slowly and taking rest day’s. Thanks for putting this together
This was perfect for me right now! I’ve been skiing and lifting weights and my lower back is super tight. I think I need to step back and do a form check with all my activities. I love your commentary, your wu and cd are excellent and the inset box w post wo stretches while you talk. I’m on a water rower but I’m still getting a good workout. Thank you for keeping such an organized library. I recently joined your FB group!
Hi Terri, I'm so pleased that my videos seem to be working for you. I'm sure my stlye isn't quite for everyone - but hopefully the way I describe things and lay out the sessions works for folks who need a slightly calmer approach. And by calmer, I mean totally unprofessional and fluffing my lines a lot... Any questions, just ask!
Good. I don't often get it up to 28, but this was OK. (I couldn't talk through it though like you!) I'll probably do this one a couple more times before moving up. Great series, and I like the variation you put into it, thanks.
Hi - thanks for the rowalong! just requires so little motivation to do it with you... i would go like a bat out of hell and then stop if not for this.... i did the 5,7,10 minute beginner rowalong series - one a day - taking it easy - starting to notice things more and trying to copy your techniques. while rowing this time i noticed i really wasn't leaning forward into the row at the nearest point - possibly due to a slight belly (bmi28) and some ankle mobility... also i notice that your elbows are quite tight to body - i think i'm flaring my elbows out a little to try to pull it back like some kind of deranged lat row.. ive set my new c2 to show the power curve and finding that helpful - though the amplitude of my curve is a little flat many times - i wonder - should i do your how to row series or the beginner series first. I'm working on the accent too ;-)
also im going backwards and forward at same pace - sort of pausing at the far end... so trying to recover slowly then push off. and when you say to do the arms only even locking my legs doesnt seem to keep but still... and the less said about the power curve the better...
@@rowalongthank you much appreciated 🙏, day two, did 15 minutes, trying to get in the habit of doing it first thing in morning without over thinking it,
My father used to row at a high level years ago and he is doubtful why you need to brace your core when rowing. He says it interferes with proper breathing. Why is it important to brace the core? And is the core just the stomach muscles? Is it to protect the spine or does it translate into more power from the legs to the arms? Sorry if that's a dumb question 🙂
It's about using your stabalising muscles at the back of the stroke to stop your lower back collapsing. I'm not saying you should brace like you're about to get punched in the stomach, but activate your 'trunk' to stabalise. Breathing wise - this then comes down to when you breath. On a long slow row, I'll breath out at the drive, then in on the recovery. Then (and this is just how I do it, I'm not saying it's the right way) at race speed I breath in as I drive, and then out as I finish, so I'm two breaths per stroke. Either way, I'm breathing out as I finish - which a lot of rowers will argue isn't good, as you're closing your chest instead of opening it.
@@rowalong Thanks so much for taking the time to reply. That makes total sense. I'm trying to learn to row on a Concept myself and just found your channel. It gets confusing when my dad is telling me the way he used to do it back in the day which doesn't always align with what you Dark Horse and Training Tall say is good form. I guess all I can do is my best 🙂Thanks again
There’s also the difference between rowing on the water and on a concept2. One needs technique to be spot on. The other, it’s more about going fast and effectively! (And efficiently)
@@rowalong Yeah, feathering the oars and all that! I'm sure I'd capsize in about two seconds! Winning races is not my aim, I'm just trying to get fitter and row with good technique to get the best out of my machine and hopefully not get injured. I think your channel will help me get there. And as a Brit, I like your more laid back style and humour. Thank you!
