Based on some of the various discussions I've observed & participated in with theists, I'd say that it's only when they're rejecting the (often vile) moral teachings of their holy book/s for secular morality, based on humanistic principles (such as compassion & empathy) that they even approach those atheistic morals pioneered by so many great philosophers & scientists during the Enlightenment & beyond.

Sorry, everything I've witnessed and learned shows me the former as not true and the latter as the only affect. Theism increases the feelings of guilt, shame, anger, hate, fear and grief. It can at times lessen how you feel it on the surface but all the while inducing you to increase it.

Probably because they were a little smarter than the rest and they saw how easily people could be manipulated. I think they got power by claiming to speak for all powerful and immortal gods. What may have convinced the naive is that the Priestly class mapped the motion of the stars and could predict things like eclipses and other planetary movement. I think this last statement is pure speculation, and an oversimplification, but it does have explanatory power and it isn't hard to see where it might go. (from here on out when I used the abbreviation 'PIG', I mean: Pagan, Idol worshiping or Goddess worshiping culture. A good book on this subject is, When God Was A Women, by Merlin Stone. Ms. Stone is a genius; feminist and I think atheist.”) These early PIG cultures built the wonders of the world and taught the world to read and write. The Egyptians were amazing. They built the Temple of Karnak for the express purpose of training scribes and Priests/Priestesses for administering to the empire. This all relied on agriculture. Agriculture is science. One unfortunate aspect of the advent of agriculture is communicable diseases and famines. The only reason for famines is crop failure. So, science brought the world famines. The worst thing that agriculture did was create alcoholic beverages. It may be that the only reason people went to agriculture is because they liked to get drunk and they needed copious amounts of grain, fruit and potatoes in order to do that. Making alcoholic spirits is chemistry/science. So, I blame science for creating the worst of all human scourges. Elitism, caused by religion because of the need for the organization, and agriculture making for drunken madness and self-destruction, has continued to grow until this day. Now look at the world! We are weak, dependent, cancer ridden, alcohol and substance abuse ridden, neurotic beings. Because of science; because of religion. In closing I wanted to add that the believer organizes, conquers and builds. For better or worse, and I think mostly worse. Atheists seem to have sat on the sidelines of history contributing nothing. And he has definitely handed his head on the two occasions he shared a stage with William Lane Craig. Have you not read his memoir, “Hitch-22” in which he admits over and over and over again to having “kept two sets of books” which essentially entails him arguing both side or alternately handing him his head himself.

Me claiming that black holes are actually polyps from the far realms would have just as much credibility. Also black holes aren’t still, stuff is happening both around and inside, we just don’t know to what extend currently. Claiming that god can’t be understood by human minds is a fancy way of saying you have no actual proof. Thats why you need to say “believe with your heart”. Yahweh incarnated himself to sacrifice himself to himself. Even the appeal to emotion about how brutal the cross was doesn't help because a there being far worse methods of torture that people have endured before and after, finite suffering is not logically equivalent to infinite suffering. Nor does finite offense warrant infinite suffering.
