Great Video! There's a reason the platform numbering at Diamond Creek is quirky. It's because Platform 2 was only built in 1994, and prior to the duplication in 2023, was only used during peak times to allow trains to cross. Clearly they decided to keep the original platform as Platform 1, whilst the new, lesser-used platform became Platform 2.
It may be useless but that was surprisingly interesting Another mostly useless fact: there is a single boat on the PTV network, the Westgate Punt. It doesn’t take myki or show up on all journey planners but it is PTV branded
OMG. Bookmarking this. You have peaked. My AuADHD brain needs to absorb all of this over several views - apparently your "useless" is my "fascinating". Thank yo so much for sharing this. You have a fantastic voice, so I hope you have a lot more "useless" info in the pipleine
The two longest tram routes in Melbourne are the 75 Vermont South and 86 East Bundoora, however it has been speculated that these could be further extended to Knox Shopping centre for the 75, and Hawkstowe railway station for the 86 (via the newer housing estates deviating west of Mill Park and terminating perpendicular to Plenty Road)
Looking at a map I can see the logical route for the 86 would be the "Plenty linear reserve" (where Plenty road turns east) and continue in a northerly direction to terminate at the Eastern end of the Plenty Valley Shopping Centre (and South Morang Station).
9:35 Fun fact Williamstown pier used to be one of the main ports of Melbourne, and is where alot of the first generation of Victorian steam locomotives where delivered and later assembled in Williamstown workshops (predecessor to Newport). The workshops where located in the open grassland where the line once was. Which means without that nub of the line Victoria wouldn't have had railways, and this video wouldn't have existed.
I like random facts, and I'll add an extra detail - Fairfield Station in Brisbane now looks completely different as it was fully rebuilt and was finished in 2023. It used to be my home station.
The problem with Diamond Creek is it got two platforms before it got two tracks. Originally all City trains and most Hurstbridge trains would depart from platform one, while only some Hurstbridge trains would depart platform two in peak times. Now that they have upgraded to double track they had to switch city departures to platform two has it is on the left hand side. What is really frustrating about the ‘upgrade’ is that 1. the newly renovated platform 2 still only has an entry and exit right smack bang into an unfriendly pedestrian carpark when they could have easily connected it to the ‘station shopping’ shopping centre. The centre walkways are under a metre from the platform and 2. After all the upgrades and double track Diamond Creekians still have to wait an hour for trains most of the day which for most make it unviable as a transport option.
Actually, Batman station is named after John Batman, who was a major participant in many massacres of indigenous peoples. He was however the only colonist to ever pursue treaty with the indigenous residents, though his "motives and the validity of the treaty remain of great historical interest and debate." And it is pronounced correctly
0:43 I was momentarily confounded by a different but very similar dead end section of tram track also in Docklands. I spent far too long attempting to board a tram that wasn't in service, only to be told that the stop was actually one block down.
Never knew the 86 and 96 were at one point run by double-decker buses! Very grateful they're trams now because I would NOT cope trying to get to work in the city by bus! I love this video so much, thanks for making it!
Dennis also is a place that doesn't exist. Its located in Northcote and there's no road, park or interesting point named this way. Dennis was an influent family that lived in that area. Also it's probably the most useless station at Hursbridge line (I know there's Wattle Glen but it's outside the urban area)
Dennis Station is specifically named after William Dennis, who was a long-serving Northcote councillor. I will admit, Dennis is pretty unremarkable, though there are some shops nearby on Victoria Road...
As someone living in paris who has never been to the southern hemisphere this will most definitely serve no purpose. But melbourne has cool trains so thank you
Hi Qazzy, ever thought about doing videos about old lines in regional Victoria that have closed but could still be accessible in some areas, including obscure ones such as the Newtown-Colac, East Natimuk-Carpolac etc etc. I live in Ballarat so we have many abandoned lines in this regional city alone and my grandmother lives in a town along the East Natimuk-Carpolac line.😊
I'd like to submit that the 'last name' pronunciation of Batman is hilarious, and instead of pronouncing stuff named after John Batman like the DC superhero, we should instead just pronounce all the '-man' superheroes like they're last names. Spiderm'n. Superm'n. Aquam'n.
My mind blew realising Ringwood East was the only station that had the direction after the name. I knew it was different but thought there had to be another one like it.
Croydon station may refer to: In Australia: Croydon railway station, Adelaide, Australia Croydon railway station, Melbourne, Australia Croydon railway station, Queensland, a stop on the Gulflander train Croydon railway station, Sydney, Australia West Croydon railway station, Adelaide, Australia In the United Kingdom: East Croydon station, the main railway station in Croydon, London West Croydon station, in Croydon, London South Croydon railway station, in Croydon, London In the United States: Croydon station (SEPTA), a SEPTA Regional Rail station in Croydon, Pennsylvania, USA 😁
Diamond creek platform 1 is the down bound platform due to that being the original side of platform 1 (The only Platform Pre-Duplication) Also, the tunnel under footscray is not only for freight but also for Albury and Sydney bound passenger trains
Frankston, one of the first residents there was a 'Frank Stone', add some blurring over the years...... Another person said it was "Frank's Station"....... Nothing official of course - at least it's not a name stolen from overseas, as so many others are.
Those two lygon street stops (stop 116 fenwick street and stop 115 melbourne cemetery) are a joke seriously. Its not uncommon for people to miss their tram because they cant cross the road even after waiting several minutes. How hard is it to add a pedestrian crossing thats exactly the same at the nearby richardson street and lytton street stops. To top it off the d2 class trams dont even fit in those safety zone stops on lygon street except for stop 114 princes street
as a point cook resident, i fell like Williams landing is so close it might as well just be considered point cook station. and half of the bus routes from there go through point cook, but they all suck.
Diamond Creek has the wrong Platform numbers, as Platform 1 was built first and was the one which was used the most before the Hurstbridge line Duplication. So when the new platform started carrying all up trains, nobody decided to change the platform number's
Richmond 3121 to South Kensington 3003 is about 29 minutes on the Werribee Line Richmond TW9 2NA to South Kensington SW7 2ND is about 29 minutes on the District Line Richmond 3121 to South Kensington SW7 2ND is about 22 hours 20 minutes on Qantas
Can you make another video almost EXACTLY the same but with All Wrong Answers? 100% Lies, like the fabled Port Philip Circle Line, connecting Geelong and Sorrento, but cancelled when they couldn’t agree whether to run clockwise or anticlockwise through to Flinders Street
06:41 Laughs in Perth, twice. We built a railway line down the middle of the Mitchell Freeway to Joondalup and then down the Kwinana Freeway for the Mandurah line. Also, and not related but to rub it in, Perth has a railway to the airport.
Platform 1 isn't usually used as it can't fit 6-car trains. The track running through the platform is used to allow V/Line trains to pass suburban trains tho...
