2:07 correction - this terminus is used occasionally for trams during disruptions. It has never been used by TIMETABLED trams in normal service.
@AbsintheBabe
@AbsintheBabe 7 месяцев назад
Do be careful about distinguishing never used and infrequently used, or used in non-revenue service. The Preston Hump is used when both 86 trams divert via Brunswick and St Georges Road if Smith Street or Northcote High Street are blocked; and at night when 86d trams from Bundoora run short runs to Dundas St/Plenty Rd then Preston Depot.

Every proper Melbournian understands that every tram on Bourke Street almost NEVER has a seat available. You want to feel the closest to being crammed in a Japanese train? Take the 96 between Crown/MCEC and Swanston Street on a nice Saturday.

This would also be somewhat solved by having more 30's across latrobe, and a general increase in some tram frequencies.

Depending on what you define as a tram, the new longest tram in the world is the A Line in Los Angeles, which makes a crazy 78km journey between Long Beach and Azusa via downtown Los Angeles, with a mix of running along city streets, down old railway alignments, over viaducts, through a freeway median, and through multiple tunnels. It was made by joining two pre-existing lines and joining them in the middle, making one behemoth line.

It's interesting that the Route 109 tram has boom gates over its road crossing, but the Route 58 tram doesn't have any boom gates where the tram crosses Elliott Avenue. The Route 96 is also an odd one due to its light rail/conversion heritage with lots of fun facts. My favorite is that it passes under another tram line and then crosses over one itself!

as someone who uses the 82 almost every day, Moore st stop is used quite frequently as it is a interchange with the craigieburn train line so the notion that it is the least used is very hilarious, the real fun fact about it would be is it is least touched on stop on the network

That Miller St tram-hump in Preston is the last scene in the great Australian Comedy & "Tram" film, Malcolm. Very last shot, is Malcolm's "Tram" going west, up the east/High St side of it, then credits roll, as it continues. Hey mate. Thanks for the video. I love trams and they are my primary transportation. I grew up near Kew Junction, where I was a few hundred meters from the 24/48, 109, and 16(69). It was a perfect spot to make use of public transport. One of my essential requirements when moving house is that it's a few minutes walk to a tram. The furthest out of the city I have lived is end of the line Vermont South (75). Love trams. Thanks again for sharing.

Good old line 96 reminded me of a very embarrassing gaffe I made way back when. I had to catch a train down to a Tele-Cine film place in Middle Park, so I consulted my trusty old Melways and deduced I needed to take the St Kilda line down to Middle Park station. I got to Flinders St and began looking for the St Kilda line platform, which was not indidcated for some reason. I then ask one of the station attendants who look at me like I'm a complete idiot. He then informs me with a chuckle that I'm about 10 years too late as the line got shut down in 1987. The year of this story was 1997. Embarrassed as all hell, I explained that I was using a Melways from 1986 (which still has the old St Kilda and Port Melbourne lines) and I've never actually traveled down that way since arriving in Melbourne in 1989. He just laughed and gave me very detailed directions towards the nearest 96 tram stop.

The Preston Hump was a short tram line with route number 9. It ran until 1995 and was the short tram route. The tracks here were layed in 1916. At this time there was no East Preston also called old Preston Depot but Thornby Depot that was located on the other side of the new Preston Depot.

Great video, it's crazy that someone figured out some of these... how do you even begin to notice a terminus platform being the only curved one, or a platform being the most south most. On a different note, it would be really good if for future videos you could put a compressor on your voice-over audio track. A compressor can help reduce the loud parts and boost up the quiet parts of your voice-over, as this video has a lot of jumps in volume that meant I had to constantly ride the volume button to keep my ears happy. There are a lot of tutorials out there but if you need some advice or default settings to use, just let me know. Also if you speak not directly into the microphone but slightly to the right or left out of line with it, you will avoid a lot of plosive and sibilant sounds (p/t/k and s/z sounds) that blow out the mic as the sharp bursts of air from your mouth won't directly be hitting the mic.

Whenever I'm in Melbourne and need to get to Little Collins St from Spencer Street Station (I still it that despite being a kid when it was renamed), I just jump on any tram along Collins St to Elizabeth St. I once caught a tram to Windsor to visit a shop there and almost missed the stop. Next time I decided to just get the train and from Sandringham as it was less confusing (and I could ignore any Extinction Rebellion nitwits blocking the tramline). Urgh that was not a fun day.

The Albert Park Beach siding on route 12 has not 'never been used'. In years past it was used for short working trams, footy extras when South Melbourne's home ground was at Lakeside Oval before they buggered off to Sydney, and more recently during the Grand Prix. Boom gates were re-installed on the 109 following a fatal accident. The Tramways Union wanted to retain the original railway boom gates, similar to the Glenelg line in Adelaide, but the dumbclucks who were managing the system ripped them out and replaced them with traffic lights. After the accident the booms were put back, albeit to a different design than the original railway booms.

Thanks for an informative video, complete with up to date information on the recent route changes. Route 59 used to turn right off Matthews Avenue and head into Essendon Airport. Also, I'm not sure that no tram has ever used that section of track off Route 12. I have a vague feeling that I travelled on it once back in the 1980s, with that terminus being known as Albert Park Beach I think. Might have been a special charter working rather than a scheduled service. Have now found photos of trams at Albert Park Beach terminus (Mills Street) one of which is a charter tour with B1.2001 on 20 Jan 2001.

@QazzyTransport - on the Route 12, the terminus is used regularly, whenever trams are recovering from a disruption, this is one of the short shunts that allow drivers to get back on time. What makes it really unique, for the moment, is that this location has the last remaining single-bladed point on the regular network. I belive that Preston Depot still has one, it is in the depot though and not on the running network.

In regards to the Mills/Danks section that is "Never used" this isn't true. Occasionally it is used as a shunt for trams running late, so that rather than going all the way to the terminus, they can regain some time. The points in the shunt of that section are very unique as they only have a single blade, rather than the regular 2. @@DwDiablo3 route 67 used to be route 4 but was renumbered as part of a network overhaul years ago, which included the renumbering of quite a few routes. I don't think route 2 has ever existed, and if it did then it probably wasn't documented or those documents have been lost to time

95 doesn't exist anymore, it was abolished years ago when they were simplifying the network and getting rid of peak-hour-only routes
