Another great tip for memorising a language is whenever you go on a walk or even if you do nothing, look at your surroundings and try to name each object in the language you're learning. It really helps a lot because you use your language everyday and that keeps your from forgetting it. ;)
I love studying grammar so much! it makes me feel much more confident when I can do it right, and it helps me memorise vocab by remembering sentences. Everybody learns differently, though.
I relate to the mistake number 4, I have been learning Chinese for one year now and I thought I shouldn't talk with native speakers until I spoke it fluently. But I realized that there was no way to speak fluently if I never dared to speak. Now I'm grad I did because my skills have improved a lot ☺
For #5: When I was studying for my language exam I also had a todo list that included repeating words, doing some reading, translating articles etc. This really helped because at the end of day I saw that I did a lot of things to improve my knowledge. Of course, I use todo lists for other aspects of my life as well.

While I was watching this video, I was playing with me new 130 Spanish flashcards LOL. I have like 1500 flashcards with English, Russian,German, and Spanish all together. I know it is really exhausting and hard at a point, but I would not say that making flashcards is a mistake. It's really did help me to be better at those languages, The hard part of this is to use all of those words. If you have any helpful idea to memorize words, please let me know. I would like to share that one of the mistakes I made during the process of learning a language was, translated in my mind when I wanted to say something and that is wrong... as you say, reading, writing, watching (movies, videos) these things help a lot, then grammar and speaking come up naturally. Mistake 8: Yeah it can be very frustrating trying to translate every word you don't understand ("pain reading") On the other hand, reading, unlike speaking, is less natural activity, and therefore reading without understanding anything is not useful as well (compared to watching video content without understanding which can still be useful to get used to the sound of the language and catch words based on what you see). So.. it can be useful to translate some words that appear all the time, and maybe try to read a less complicated book, but definitely not translating every word
Yes, this is very true! I started off reading easier short stories that I could mostly understand. But when I do read more complicated books I have to look up words.

Hi Shea, great video! My personal mistake was also studying like they tought us at school.. lot of grammar exercises, vocabulary lists.. until I noticed that this is no fun and not effective. Then I learned languages more and more the way I enjoy it, by watching movies, reading books, finding a penpal to write with, talking to people who speak the language as much as possible.. and I skipped grammar exercises completely and learn words from context only, no lists. And I progress so much quicker!

You're honestly one of the nicest people I follow on RU-vid. :-) I have been learning Italian for more or less ten months and I felt sooo bad when I booked a lesson with a tutor. But I did it and it helped me sooo much. Another absolutely amazing app is Babbel. I cannot even say how much I love both Italki and Babbel. I use italki for speaking practise and Babbel for grammar which is taught in a very nice and understandable way. Works perfectly. I'm definitely quilty of the mistake number 10 and I definitely should focus more on my own progress and mainly on enjoying the process of language learning. I completely agree with the comprehension level vs production level issue. In my own personal experience, the comprehension level improves at a much faster rate than production at first. I too am trying to even out the balance of these two things with an iTalki tutor. Thanks for the great advice!
Yeah the more I've talked with other language learners, the more I realized it's pretty common. But I'm also focusing a lot more on speaking now and I'm really seeing improvement!
I would find words I use everyday and out them into my day to day talk with my coworkers. “I’m hungry” “is it time to go home yet” “I want my salad now!”. I asked a coworker how they were last week and low and behold~ they said “eh it’s this and that” I went straight to translating their statement “questa e quella” I don’t know why but it made me happy I knew it. It was small but clearly it was more than I knew before learning so….gold star for me.
This is a good video. I like the idea of practicing one's writing. Writing your target language by hand will help you to remember how words are spelled and where the diacritical marks go if your target language has diacritical marks.
I’m surprised I haven’t seen this yet in the comments but duolingo is a life saver. I know 4 languages and Italian is one of them. But Italian is the only one I’ve learnt through duolingo and it’s my favourite way so far; I’m so glad I found it. I don’t have enough money to buy workbooks etc so especially great since it’s free. I find the interactiveness super useful and that it incorporates all 4 skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking) and instantly corrects you so you can improve mistakes. I also haven’t done much practice solely on grammar or vocab, I’ve instead just learnt through context and sentences and it’s stuck to memory so much easier. I also know spanish which is helpful since they’re similar. But I do jot all new vocab down in notebooks once I’ve learnt it so I can review later. I also find duolingo doesn’t feel like a chore or schoolwork like going through flash cards or workbooks does, so therefore is more enjoyable. I’m honestly loving it so much and hope to learn French & Polish soon too!
Oh I forgot to add but I don’t solely use duolingo. It’s more a foundation to learn vocab rather than buy workbooks etc. Once I know a decent amount that’s when I started to do extra practice with writing my own sentences, spelling tests, etc. I also find reading Italian literature and seeing what I can translate fun. But my fave activity is by far listening to Italian music and seeing what words or phrases I can pick up, and then searching for the full lyrics and trying to translate them into English, and comparing my answers to the official translation :)
My mistake was trying to conquer the grammar all at once...and spending all my time mastering grammar 😂 But since watching your video's you got me in the habit of practicing my writing from English into Italian 😄 I am still terrified to do the italki.... your thoughts was my thoughts of talking to a tutor !

I really appreciate this video and all the advice you gave. I really struggle with comparing myself to others or being compared to others. I’ll have people tell me I should’ve been able to learn Spanish in 6 months and they know lots of people who did that but it’s taking me a lot longer and that’s okay 👍🏻

Thanks for sharing. I’ve been learning Italian by myself for the past 3 years but finding time to stay consistent is very difficult. I comprehension is better but I still have a long way to go. I always speak Spanish and while some of the words mean the same thing, they are pronounced differently and there are other words pronounced exactly the same way but the meaning in completely different. Either way, I am determined to stay on course at my pace. I will get the book 👍🏻
Hi Shea! Like you, I am at a B1 level in Spanish. You are farther along in your Italian, maybe you're done with B1 and I just started! I pushed myself to join a Spanish conversation class. My speaking is awful! I can understand a lot more than I can speak. Maybe that's just how it is?
Yeah I think that’s usually just what happens. I think it’s pretty common to be able to understand but really struggle with speaking. But good job joining a class!
I can relate to all these things+ I tend to use inputs(listening ) as much I can. But that didn't help me in any way. So I changed the method to repetitive listening. It gets boring but it works like how we learn the lyrics of a song. I learned passively at the beginning which I can relate to mistake #1.But active learning is more fun and enjoyable. Learning a language my own is something that really excites and fascinates me.

Grammar... Yes, when I tried to learn Arabic, there was an online class that started exactly with that (sarf). It did not help me at all. I didn't learn one sentence after a long time period. That was so frustrating.

The thing is I don´t have any native person I could speak Spanish with so the best way for me to practice and do workbooks and read books. Have you tried using Tandem or HelloTalk? Those are both free apps you can use to talk with native speakers! Journaling is great, watching RU-vidrs in Spanish, reading children's stories, etc. I have lots of other videos with helpful tips for learning any language!
Honest to admit but most learning retention is based on making mistakes. In other words don't be put off by not knowing. I write down as many sentences of conversation I had during the day and then interpret it, it's like rehearsing what has been said; this works for me.
Somewhere in the world is someone named Dan and he journals in a blue pencil. haha. When you said mimic sounds, it made me think of the Mimic Method with Idahosa Ness. Any experience with that program or thoughts about it? I find your videos very helpful. I am also learning Italian. You may have answered this in a previous video but did your initial interest in learning Italian come from watching BABY? And lastly, are you part Italian. hhahahahah poor Dan! I actually have never heard of the mimic method and I'm really curious to research it now. I'll have to try it! My initial interest came from when I studied abroad in Italy for 5 months and yes, my mothers side of the family is Italian. Unfortunately my grandfather passed away when I was super young and he was like the last one who actually spoke Italian, so I'm trying to revive it!

Question for bilingual ppl... Is it easier for you to learn third language through English or your native language? I was learning Italian through my native language and the learning went really slow, then (unconsciusly) I switched to learning Italian through English and it was so much faster and easier, shock...
Yeah, I think it works better with English because of two reasons. One is that it's a commonly used language so you might be able to find a lot more stuff in Eng than in your native language. Two is that Eng and ITA have quite a similar base in terms of grammar or pronunciation. Just sharing what I think
yes. I do learn Finnish in my 4th language, which is Swedish, and find it easier than learning it in my natives. actually I never thought about English bc I've found it too easy but I'd say it's easier to pick another than ur native

I didn't open an LLC, no. I'm not sure all affiliate programs require a SSN? Honestly I make most of my income through RU-vid, brand sponsorships and selling my own products which all don't require giving my SSN to anyone.
@@SheaJordan ahhh interesting! I noticed sometimes things require tax forms and such- which either u need to give like google Adsense for example use your ssn or your llc's tax id. I guess i just need to look into it more of course. :-). But, it's good in your case u don't give ur ssn online because i think that is not good at all! Although from what i read online people do it when doing different kinds of affiliate programs( like amazon associates for example) that are links and such.

First of all, I definitely don't think Italy is an unimportant country AT ALL! 😮 I absolutely LOVE Italy, I lived there for 5 months, my family heritage is Italian but unfortunately, my Italian relatives have passed away and no one kept the Italian language in the family, so I'm definitely trying to bring it back! I feel very connected to Italy and I want to do my best to reconnect with the culture and language. 💕

Yes that's ok! A tutor really helps your progress, but it's not completely necessary. Maybe try to use free apps like Tandem and HelloTalk to speak with native speakers.
