Thanks for all the game recommendations I've never heard of! Honestly, it is much better to be recommended games I haven't played than games I have so I appreciate this. I checked out a few Growlanser games because of one of your past videos by the way and I really enjoyed them. Rather unique gameplay.

Everyone needs to play Lunar 1 and 2, both games have really solid stories with well developed characters. I imagine most people who are into JRPGs have played them but if you have not get on it! I recommend grabbing the PsP version of Lunar 1 as its just the overall better version that doesn't change anything just adds more. Lunar 2 is available on the ps1 and might be expensive/extremely hard to find if you are trying to buy it but if you are not afraid of emulators it is well worth it!

Lats Story voice acting is refreshing because the actors are not only English, but also Welsh, Scottish, and Irish

Suikoden 3 was my introduction to the series. Loved it, will always hold a special place in my heart. I've since played them all, but Suikoden 5 is my favourite.

A great list of games! You definitely are becoming one of the best places to come to for jrpg recommendations, even for people who have played them for years. I will have to try Y's 8 when I have the opportunity. As for some of the other games you mentioned, Vandal Hearts is a basically the PS1 spiritual successor to Shining Force. It is fantastic and I enjoyed it tremendously. Wild Arms 2 is definitely an underrated sequel that many people will enjoy. Suikoden 3 rarely gets the attention it deserves. It is more difficult than 1, 2, 4, or 5, but it is an interesting game with a great story. As far as Breath of Fire is concerned, I agree with you that 2 is not as good as some claim. 4 is definitely a good game, but I never enjoyed it as much as 3 and I found ts graphical style bland and the camera frustrating at times. Still, if you enjoyed Breath of Fire 3, you'll probably like its sequel.

Radiata stories was one of my favorite childhood games, glad to see it here

Atelier iris 3 is an okay game in my opinion, it's kinda different from the first 2, your based in one town and you branch out into a few dungeons to do various tasks, there's a main story divided into chapters and you get more tasks as you progress through the chapters, it's kinda similar to the mana khemia games, except there's no school aspect in this game, so this game can sort of be considered a predecessor to the mana khemia games. also the cast is smaller, there's 3 characters you use the entire game, no party swapping like in the other games.

Imlove the Atelier Iris Trilogy! It is so much fun.

I just bought Ys VIII yesterday! Never played one, but the metacritic and user recommendations are both high. Physical copies are rare / expensive in UK, even major pre-owned brand stores sell for £40 (which is ridiculous). But I snagged one for £21 new, from a supplier with only 5 copies (phew!). Also...Breath of Fire IV is excellent, and it has fishing. Great video. New fan of your channel here.

So happy you put Ys VIII at #1. I just recently 100%'d it. It sure marked a big leap forward in terms of Ys games. I'm a long time fan of the franchise and VIII just absolutely blew me away. 10/10. Just picked up IX but from what I've read and seen about it, it doesn't look near as good as 8.

I was able to play Vandal Hearts 2 back in the day. It was a turn-based strategy RPG much like the first one, but the catch is, the actions you take happens simultaneously with the action of the enemy. That was tons of fun.

Agree with the vast majority. But I'd also include La Pucelle Tactics, the DOT HACK series, and Blue Dragon for games that don't get the love they deserve.

I was going to comment on your most expensive list for the ps3 since you mentioned the later atelier series, but since you brought up what is possibly one of my absolute favorites here I decided to instead. Thanks for always plucking my heart strings, it makes my whole day better to hear other collectors speak so highly about games that feel like they get left to the wayside. =)

I played Ys VIII in my Switch and i loved!! Its so amazing! The battle system is fun and adictive, the history is very good, Dana i lovable and the music... OMG! The music is awesome. Everyone should play this game!

I'd love The Last Story HD on Switch! Such a fun and good game! That Radiata Stories looks amazing! Graphics still look good on it lol. Never played that one but will definitely be changing that. Is it like the Tales of series as it looks a lot like it. I thought it was one of the older ones at first.

Rather like these kinds of lists, though I find it more interesting when a franchise is brought to my attention with a good entry from it. From that recommendation, people can dive deeper into the series. Games like _Ys 8_ are great ways to get your toes wet before diving into more of Falcoms works.

Nice! I just restarted Path Of Radiance! I can't find myself to play early 3d graphics games even if they are great. They did not age well. I do prefer BoF4 kind of graphic over FF7 any day. Even tough I did play FF7 like 8 years ago when it was already ugly. So I don't think I can play most of the games you recomanded (well I also don;t have the time for all of them )! Wild Arms 2 and Breath of Fire 4 are both so damn good

I love Vandal Hearts. Haven't found a game that compares ever since I played it as a kid.

Some highly recommendable games: Treasure of the Rudras (Squaresoft games that's very much a FF game without being a FF game, but sadly a Japan exclusive) and Hexyz Force (Atlus game that's sadly hard to come by).

Agree with the whole list. Great games I remember how I instantly went on Amazon to order the whole Atelier iris trilogy after hearing some of the tracks on youtube. Man, those games surely had a fantastic OST. Wild Arms 2 is my favorite out of all Wild Arms games, the message behind the story made such a huge impression on me, the characters were all relatable (the fallen hero, the little girl who was always standing in the shadow of her big sister and the main protagonist with his inner darkness), also that game had a great soundtrack as well. Another great game on the PS2 was Ys Vi - Ark of Napishtim, that was the game that got me into the YS series

Illusion of gaia for the snes is also one that is not talked about very much but is also one of the best rpgs ever released for that system.

BoF4, definitely a great game. I still have a physical copy, just no working PS systems to play it on. I'd say get YSVIII on the Switch for cards and a nice poster with a map. Plus being able to play it anywhere is pretty handy. I actually have a copy of Atelier Iris 3 but for the life of me, I can't remember if I actually played it. Also have Radiata stories, remember playing it and liking it, just never beat it.

Here in Baltimore (in the hood I should say) one of the Gamestops sells all Vita games as new even if they are used, I ended up getting YS 8 for the Vita for $15 US with an elite pro membership, probably one of the better deals I've gotten at Gamestop.

Lachrymosa looks awesome, but I want to know if a regular version exist (disc only) the ones I'm seeing on eBay have a soundtrack or are a deluxe version Ah, and a suggestion for a video, would be about Valkyrie Chronicles games, I own two games the fourth and the remaster of the first both n Ps4, however I'm not sure on getting the spin off Revolution , it looks nice but it would be nice to know how the battle system works

thanks for the reminders , like radiata stories , vandal heart is awesome , and deep, first and only tactical rpg that you get punished for over leveling , i mastered that game , my example is getting Ash to lv 10 , so he can class change after the tutorial and second battle on the city, yeah my ash got class changed before getting any more team members.

I actually participated in Operation Rainfall since I heard of it through IGN. I sent a letter to NOA asking for The Last Story, then another asking for all three games that Op Rainfall was requesting. I ended up getting all three games and loved them!

If you like Atelier Iris, it's really worth it to try Mana Khemia out. It's basically an improvement to everything in Iris series. Very solid gameplay, lovely characters and decent plot. Still my favorite JRPG of all time.

Vandal Hearts was a part of my teenage years, Breath Of Fire (My Personal favorite Rpg franchise), Atelier Iris 2 also fantastic. So many GEMS on Psone, Ps2...fucking good old times.

Suikoden 3 was my first Suikoden game and made me search for the other games. It ended up being my 4th favorite Suikoden behind 2, 5 and 1. But ahead of most others Rpg games I have played. I love specially Last Story. Wild Arms 1 and 2. Radiata story. I have them and I beat them. Awesome games. Awesome games. Y's Lacrimosa of Dana I have it on my ps4 and it is a very good game. BoFire 4 I have not beaten but I have the psone physical copy. All the games you mentioned are great and I know cause I finished them all so I will try the ones I have not played like Project Xzone, Atelier and Vandal Hearts (I actually think I have this on my ps3 digital collection) Ragnarok..i dont have a psp so I wont play that one unless they make it available on another medium (can I get it on my Vita??) All in all great list...I need to check your first video now that I have seen this list. By the way I also have Fire Emblem Path of Radiance 😂

Atelier Iris Grand Phantasm (the third game) is actually a good game. It was connected to one and two in name only. I think it got criticized for being different from the others. But looking at it as a standalone game, it is very good. Not great, but very good. Also Nel is a pretty funny character. It's the kind of RPG that you can't listen to what other people say. You just have to form your own opinion. Otherwise, great list. I've played all these games and love them.

Love BoF IV, Epic music

Played Ys 8 on PC and it's very good, fast action and excellent story.

BoF IV is amazing, I actually have it digitally on my PS3, same with Wild Arms 2 ( I sadly never played any of the games after 3 but man I LOVE 2 & 3 ) The Last Story is one of my favorite Nintendo RPGs, and I'm honestly hoping it and Pandora's Tower can get remastered ports on Switch ( come on Nintendo....give your amazing non Mario & Pokemon RPGs more of a chance! ). Path of Radiance is also a favorite of mine, and was the first Fire Emblem I ever finished :) Suikoden 3 has a great story and the main combat is still good....but it has by far IMO the WORST army/strategy battles in the series. the multiple character story angles is a neat concept, but if you only use 1 save slot like I tend to it can screw you out of continuing to explore, grind & just have fun ( I didn't know until after saving during the final character's story that opens after the main game that you can't go back to the main part to explore the base & whatnot... :/ ) can't speak on the others as I never played them ( I do plan on renting Ys VII though, it looks fun )....and on a side note, I wish people would stop lumping Xenogears, the Xenosaga trilogy & the Xenoblade franchise into a single Xeno series when they're 3 separate things ( though there are clear arguments to be made for gears & the saga trilogy being connected, Xenoblade has NOTHING to do with them and was only given that title to pay homage to the team's prior works )

Erik I highly agree with your feelings regarding the hidden gem definition. Yet would you not agree that a game can also suffer under lack of promotion, limited prints or similar reasons? I think Radiata Stories is the perfect example here, back in the days I never ever saw anything about this game in print or online media. I received this game as a test copy to write reviews on otherwise I might be in the same situation as many others today. Glad you covered this, it‘s one of the funniest games I ever played in my life.

Ys viii sold me on the series. I went to Portland Retro Gaming Expo and picked up a PSP and bought a bunch of the others for Vita and PSP.

I love Wild Arms 2 it's my first jrpg. It wild Arms 3 where I'm lost. I wouldn't strongly recommend Wild Arms 2 without some sort of guide. I remember some sort of fortress in the sky in the directions to get there as just wrong

I recommend one of the last games for the 3DS, Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story. It's a remake of a DS game with much better graphics, and it's perhaps Nintendo's swan song for the 3DS.

So... I miss "Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria" on this list. It's one of the greatest JRPGs I've ever played, I'm waiting for a sequel to this day.

Ys VIII was one of the very FEW games i completed in 2018, and i must have bought like 25 or 30 games.

Y's viii I have the demo on ps4 and played it many times for hours. Now it's $30 on sale on switch so, gotta get it.

I'm not a Final Fantasy player but I absolutely *loved* The Last Story! I'm playing the original Breath of Fire on Switch. And I don't know much about Ys, is any recent one in the series worth picking up? Switch is the only system I'm using right now. Either Ys or Atelier and I'm surprised no one's talking about Disgaea.

I love the Ys series and played and beaten all of them (yes, the terrible Ys 5 too). Ys1&2 is still awesome today but Ys8 is something special. Truly amazing game.

Ragnarok Tactics eh? I'm playing right now and I'm so fucking addictive to it. It took me two days to adapt to that type of battle system, but when I addapted to that OH GOD. ONE FUCKING WEEK PLAYING IT AND I'M SO ADDICTED TO IT

I would love to play the Project Crosszone games but unfortunately I don't own a 3DS or have any way to emulate them. 😥 I will try the Vandal Hearts and Ragnarok Tactics games since I can emulate PS and PSP games. 😍

Have you played Brigandine: Legend of Forsena? If you did, can you recommend some other game like it? I truly love Brigandine, but seems there's not like it anywhere.

The last story is a game I thoroughly enjoyed. It was hyped up, and I got the special edition for it. Then it just went quiet. The controls were fine on manual, but what did annoy me is that enemies were always scaling to my level. Which makes the whole idea of leveling characters completely useless.

I would like to see a top 10 short length JRPGs, not in order of the shortest, but good games with less than 25 hours to beat.
