In this video, I share a collection of 10 more little RVing tips and tricks I've gathered over the last couple of years.
See more RV tips in the Love Your RV! tips post and video archives - www.loveyourrv... or check out the RV Tips playlist - • Seven Boneheaded RVing...
Shop through Ray's LYRV Amazon Page - www.amazon.com...
1) Hitch Hookup Height - measure and cut 1x2 lumber to use for indicating the correct height to hookup up the fifth wheel. Lean wooden stick against the pin box and raise the front landing jacks until the stick falls. Stick can also be used to measure safe slideout distance by marking it with some tape.
2) RV Oven Tip - Use a pizza stone in the RV gas oven for more even cooking and to prevent burning food on the bottom of pans. To keep the pizza stone from bousing and breaking store thick wood cutting board on top during travel. Bonus tip: Layer tin foil on the bottom of the oven to catch drips and splatters making cleaning easier.
3) Fresh Water Fill Tip - For maximum filling of the RV fresh water tank I make sure the trailer is level or raised higher on the filling side. For dumping waste tanks, I do the opposite.
4) Dry Awning after Rain - Sometimes we don't use our awning for weeks at a time, and it would get moldy inside. By making sure to open it after every rain and let it dry for 10 minutes or so, I solved the mold problem.
5) 3M Outdoor Mounting Tape - If you want to attach something light to the inside RV walls, I have found the 3M tape does the job. I mounted a wooden carving over our entrance door, and a few years later it's still firmly attached. I find the "Outdoor" variety works the best, especially on rougher surfaces.
One drawback is removal isn't easy. 3M advises using fishing line to cut through tape them solvent to remove sticky residue.
6) Prevent RV Plumbing from Freezing - Get a wireless thermometer and place it near the coldest plumbing pipes. To find the coldest plumbing location use an Infrared Thermonteror gun. Now you can monitor the most at risk plumbing and take action before it, and the rest of the RV plumbing can be damaged.
7) Remove Hard Water Spots - When in areas using well water such as the desert it's not uncommon to find whitish hard water spots left over on the windows after washing the rig. To easily remove them fill a spray bottle with 50/50 mix of white vinegar and water. If you also do this to the painted areas of the RV, its a good idea to re-wax right away. Vinegar may strip some waxes.
8) LOOK UP! - Always a good reminder but even more so as spring is approaching. Our RVs are tall, and it's easy to forget to look above for obstacles. In the springtime, many of the seasonal campgrounds and parks haven't had a chance to trim the trees back. Don't let your RV roof be the trimmer.
9) Trailer Safety Brake Cable - For fifth wheel owners always double check the emergency trailer brake cable is free for any entanglements and nothing can shift during travel accidentally pulling the plunger out.
10) Storing a Desktop Computer During Travel - Anne owns a large 21" iMac. To keep it safe when we are towing the fifth wheel it gets stored in a custom built 2" foam frame and laid face down. We also store it in the under bed storage area. Being right above the hitch connection it gets the littlies up and down movement.

Great tips as always! I use an indoor outdoor thermometer in my battery bay to monitor my new lithium batteries and ensure that they are warm enough for recharging in cold weather. I also installed some insulation board to close in that area of the passthrough cabin around the batteries and a remotely controlled 100watt bulb which keeps the area nice and warm.

The 5th wheel brakes was a great tip, as onetime I turned into a driveway, and it was a very sharp turn, I couldn't figure why the truck stopped and it was a very hard stop and wouldn't go forward, I had traffic blocked, and after a long time, I was able to find that the brakes had been tripped from the tight turn, so now I have a longer cable, and I always make sure it isn't or can't be triggered by anything, lesson learned, thanks for sharing for others that haven't had that experience.

Thanks Ray, You have probably covered this, but I have always had bad luck using the regular EZ anchors, or Mollys to attach things to these cheap RV hardboard ? walls. The Hollow door/ drywall anchors work extremely well. They look the same as regular EZ anchors, and maybe they are the same, but the hollow door ones really grab and hold in that cheap paneling!

When you deployed your awning and immediately retracted it reminded me of something I recently learned. Pause for a couple of seconds after deploying about two feet or so to allow the gas struts to catch up. Then deploy the rest of the way. Same goes when retracting. Tech said struts will last longer this way.

Interesting, my Dometic 9100 manual didn't say anything about that - liferebooted.net/life-rebooted-rv-files/owners-manuals/Dometic%209100%20Power%20Awning%20Manual.pdf Do you know what make and model of awning they were referring to? I figure at the slow rate of opening that wouldn't be an issue. Shocks seem to be similar to what is used in a hatchback car. Cheers, Ray

I also would wonder if that's good for the motor, stopping it like that each time and then it has to start again with full torque to get the awning moving again. Maybe wearing the motor out to save the cheaper struts. Just a thought..

That's a good point about the motor. I've heard of many awning motors packing it in. Here's a link that explains it better than I can... Is he right? Great tips. I shared the monitor foam wrap tip (10:06) with another RU-vidr. They have a curved monitor so I suggested it would be a good idea to have the foam base modified to match the profile of the front of the monitor due to potential flexing. They had a monitor break in transit when using a blanket to wrap their old monitor.

That 3M tape works well for sure! We have storage crates in our basement, we put items like 3M tape, masking tape, stainless screws in bags. We then create a spreadsheet for each bin and number the bins. Seems a bit much however if I’m in the roof and need something I just ask my better half and she can locate it quickly and toss it up to me. Thanks for the tips and tip 1 was great!

Great tips Ray. Something I did was to purchase water leak detectors/alarms from Amazon (a 5 pack for $40.00) and place them wherever a water source is. In my case, I put one under the kitchen sink, bathroom sink, behind the toilet and one in the basement storage area where the city water enters the rig. It has already saved the day once under the kitchen sink when a small leak developed but was able to isolate it. 😎

Just heard of another tip on another RU-vid site which makes sense. When you extend or retract your awning, the gas shocks they install aren't the most robust-made in the world, (surprise!) The tip is to move the awning out, (or in,) 12 to 18 inches, and then pause for a bit to allow the gas in the shocks to equalize, before proceeding with the full extension or retraction. This is supposed to extend the life of the shocks! I'm gonna add this to my routine from now on -- figure it can't hurt!

@williamgates4399 5 лет назад
Yea, I heard just run out until the gas shock just starts to move away from its stored position, stop for about 30 seconds to a minute and then you can open the awning the rest of the way out. I think it will allow the shock to perform its duties during rain buildup on the awning and then dump.

Just keep the box the pizza stone came in... I purchased several of the battery type light switch, stick on lights and placed them in the closets so you can see. My sink is flush with the counter and my stove like yours has no cover. I made a cutting board cover for the stove and when removed it sits nicely over most of the sink for more work space. I have a wall mounted paper towel rack, I use a long head band, like a small bungee cord to keep the towels from unrolling. My wife is short so I found plastic tubs just the right size to fit the over head cabinets. She can pull the tub out and find everything in there.

Just because your waste drain is on the left side of camper doesn't mean you raise the right side for better drain, you need to find which side of the tank the outlet pipe is on, on my 2020 cougar the outlet is on the right rear of the tank so I need to raise the left side and the front for it to have a good drain. Also when running the awning out or in don't do it all in one shot, let it go out a couple feet and stop for a bit same with bringing it back in, it will save on the shocks.
@harleyd500
@harleyd500 5 лет назад
#3 for us is a big one. Not so much the fresh water but dumping the tanks. Not only side to side but front to back. On a truck camper it's easy to ramp a wheel and it makes a big difference. I am amazed how badly some rv dump stations are graded downhill and away from the dump inlet effectively making a good dump impossible.
@katphyre
@katphyre 5 лет назад
Do you just use blocks to raise one side for dumping? What about when you're staying in your full hookup site but the tanks need dumping?
@harleyd500
@harleyd500 5 лет назад
@@katphyre Yes, typically the passenger front. That slopes the camper towards the dump hose. Not always needed unless the dump station paving is sloped the wrong way. We rarely stay at full hook up sites but we level the camper when we do. The tanks drain fine when the camper is level.

Well all great ideas, but with the newer auto leveling it has a hitch memory so you just push 2 buttons it the front legs goes back to the same height to when you unhitched and the slide clearance I carry a measuring tape in the door of my truck and I have all the measurements and my step by step setup sheet on my cell phone....but still great ideas! I just started hanging stuff on the walls pictures and signs and I experimented with the command velcro strips and I put some large stuff on the walls like clocks and big signs and I went on some off roads and rough and everything stayed on the wall, I stuck one side on the object and put the 2 pieces together and peeled of the other and push on to the wall works great and if I want to remove the item the command tape comes right off without leaving a mark on the wall and no holes. With the velcro I can just pull the item off and push it right back on,,, for setting the clocks and changing the batteries in the clock. www.command.com/3M/en_US/command/products/~/?N=5924736+3294529207+3294774739+3294857497&rt=rud

What do you do with a branch at a camp site? You can't cut it off before you hit it? Great tips!

Usually, the camp host or ranger on duty will come and take care of it. I carry a sharp saw just in case for out in the wilds.

On my 4th camper now, ('18 Cougar) and never been impressed with the cooling abilities of the roof mounted ac..camper has 1 ac but is wired for 2. Was thinking of installing a ductless mini split ac system for the bedroom (110V version) was wondering if there was any reason this wouldn't work in a camper.

Great tips really enjoy your videos! Just wondering how reliable you have found your Keystone Cougar? Would you buy another Cougar after your experience? Any information would be greatly appreciated!
@LoveYourRV
@LoveYourRV 5 лет назад
Thanks! :) My experience is we have full timed in it for near 8 years now and its held up surprisingly well considering its meant for weekenders and vacationers. Two biggest failures have been the fridge and water heater made by Dometic and Suburban, not Keystone. www.loveyourrv.com/cougar-trailer-review-fulltime-rving/ As far as new, sorry hard for me to say, mine is 2011, lots could have changed since then. I haven't looked at the newer stuff, not one for RV shows. But, most of the newer stuff not just Cougar is suffering from poor quality I've heard. The RV industry has been booming so they have been churning them out at the same time good labor is harder to find.

Just asking, do you go up and down on the latter on the back of trailer when you do your weather station or use your little one

I use the attached rig ladder, I can reach the weather station from it.

Instead of using your cutting board in the oven to protect the pizza stone, another good item to use is a piece of bubble wrap placed under the pizza stone.

Good tip! Works for us because I need a place to store the cutting board anyway, stove works well so killed two birds with one pizza stone. :)

extend your wire cover on your breakaway switch wires rubbing on steel frame
@LoveYourRV
@LoveYourRV 5 лет назад
Could do but don't really think it's necessary. That's how the factory installed the switch 8 years ago when I got the rig new. Now have over 70,000 miles of towing it. No signs of chaffing at all. The pin box corner is a smooth, rounded piece of metal and the wires don't even touch it. www.loveyourrv.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/Brake-wire.jpg Cheers, Ray

I was watching a RU-vid video a couple of years ago where they basically added rhino lining to the whole top of the RV. Have you ever heard of this Ray? What kinds of issues might come up with that? I'm assuming they were still able to remove fans and A/C units for maintenance but it sounds like it might be good for when you have branches drag across the roof. Also, they said it has a lifetime guarantee. It seems like if it was that great we'd see more people doing it.
@LoveYourRV
@LoveYourRV 5 лет назад
Haven't heard of that but I know once people's rubber roofs degrade they try all sorts of different coating products since replacing it is expensive. A friend of mine used Henrys Tropi-Cool - www.loveyourrv.com/worn-rv-rubber-roof-henry-tropi-cool-coating/
@ihatetrump3603
@ihatetrump3603 5 лет назад
@@LoveYourRV Henri's makes good products. I tried a couple of their line when I owned an older mobile home some years ago. I will probably use something like that when my rubber roof fails.
@ihatetrump3603
@ihatetrump3603 5 лет назад
@@katphyre I wouldn't use rino lining for that kind of application. I am quite sure there are many better products that aren't so rigid that can flex due to temperature changes.

Once the trailer's emergency brake is set by pulling the cable, how are the brakes released so you can move it again? Hope you all got through the high winds recently in our region of New Mexico okay!
@LoveYourRV
@LoveYourRV 5 лет назад
There is a little plunger that pops out so you would put it back in to switch the brakes back off or you could disconnect the fifth wheels battery. Made it through the winds unscathed, been much calmer the last few days. :)

You're supposed to soak the pizza stones before use or it can/will shatter eventually.

I've heard the opposite if you soak in water is can crack because they are porous and can absorb the water. So far with this one, I've never done anything to it and its been good for years.
