Agree 100%. And it’s a precious thing one experienced pen enthusiast says that publicly so that people can save their money from not buying things they do not actually nor need neither will enjoy for other than a couple of weeks. I have about 12 pens by now, and have come to the same realization when a Uniball Air writes better. Despite that, still trying to find a pen to compete that. But, I think it will take a couple of more pens cause I have already narrow it down, with every purchase getting closer. Of course, for every individual that differs. For me, that would be the case. Then, I will mostly enjoy the experience inks and the paper. However, I might get - at some point - a very good one. But we are talking about a couple of years horizon. In the end, my aim is to get about 4 pens that would be really what I want so as to accommodate my 4 families of inks I need for my job. The rest might be gifted to friends and relatives. At the end of the day, I started this journey aiming at sustainability, trying to save plastic from normal pens. So, if I keep buying pens I do not really need, this cancels my main target. Besides, my main job is done with electronics devices, and apart from some little writing, I do not see this reverting in the foreseeable future. Let’s make this journey worthy, by making it sort, and sustainable, and fun!
My 5 years in the hobby has lead me to understand you can pay a lot for some pens that don’t really offer much in terms of writing experiences 😂 I think getting your nib customised offers a lot more value for your overall enjoyment. Buying Japanese usually gives you a better out of the box writing experience! I love your point on ink and paper, that really does take your experience to the next level. On your point about pricing, I honestly don’t hold nib material as an aspirational goal. I have the luxury of owning both steel and gold and if the nib is well tuned I honestly can’t notice the difference in experience. Typically speaking gold nibs generally get more fine touches in factory than steel, but if you ever have a chance to write with an Onoto or Waldmann you’ll see that steel can perform on par!
I disagree with nib size doesn't matter. Its the most important thing to me as a daily journaler. I want to like broad nibs but then just don't work for me after several tries.

Hi. You make some very insightful points. I tend to buy a replica pen first to try it out. If I like it, then I buy an authentic pen. I still enjoy the replicas as well as the authentic pens even more. It allows me to try out the many different model pens on the market. Some less expensive pens are very enjoyable. Due to their attractive price points, they are unique with their own characteristics.
Insightful comments, even after ten+ years I'm still learning. For me, I didn't know where the overbuying line lay until I blew past. Now, I'm happy to pick through used pens with specialty grinds on the Pen Addict Slack channel. Keep up the great work 🎬
Tomoe Rover paper is just too thin for me. Show through and bleeding is consistent. I use standard ink, some may be saturated if the dry time is quick. Shading and sheen is not something I find attractive. Dark inks are best. I have to change my buying habits. I have been using the lower tier pens but should try the higher tier. I have thought of Pelikan pens but perhaps Montblanc if the flow is drier. Steel nibs have been improving over the least feed years. There is not much difference between steel and gold. Non flex pens are not for me. Nibs that provide line variation are suitable, but not flex.
Kyowa brand papers from 100 yen shops are also really amazing for fountain pens. No bleed even when I used a wet M nib from TWSBI diamond 580! And they’re smooth too. Of course, no one beats Hobonichi. lol
