3 observations about the Lucky Thompson's video: (1) his mustache is on point; (2) his mouthpiece is pushed all the way down the cork; (3) the drummer's snare playing is incredible.

I'm waiting for the ten most over rated players. There are some objectively mediocre musicians out there who have managed to make a living in music. But since it is all about taste and level of sophistication there can never be such a list! Right?

Someone who has played with the fabulous Mingus band from the early 60’s should definitely not be considered underrated!

Underrated. EVENTHOUGH played with the Mingus band never got the same recognition as say,."Eric Dolphy" as a saxophone master

Warne Marsh great 🎷 horn player and in my humble view the most underrated on this excellent list.

Warne baby! Dig him with Sal Mosca live at the vanguard. He's one of the few players to always have humor in his playing, like Sonny or Bird.

Underrated by whom?....... I thought all of them were pretty established players. Lucky Thompson and Clifford Jordan are my personal favourites but Tina Brooks, Billy Mitchell, Junior Cook, Richie Kamuca, Sal Nistico, Joe Romano and Harold Vick, for example, are even more underrated among American tenor players IMO. Cheers, Senator!

Happened to hear Houston at Blue Note in NY @2004. Had never heard of him but he quickly became one of my favorites. His forceful tone deliberate approach tempered by a calm confidence much like his presence. Good Call Mr. Sanders.

YES, you got Houston on the list! Gene Ammons' natural successor and currently having one of the better late-career runs of any sax player around these days. Sucks I only have two albums of his as leader, but I'll definitely go out and get more when I have the chance. Seeing Lucky on there was another win, through his work on soprano was even more interesting (finally got Coltrane to dabble in it).

THIS is the video I needed! I've been looking for more players to add to my list to check out and this video and the alto version have been awesome. Although Fathead Newman is one I have heard of! Captain Buckles is a killer one. Also Eddie Harris I heard of thanks to Cold Duck Time. My favorite channel...

"Standard Jazz": melodic, methodical, excellent, coherent, smooth, cool, literal, progressive, relaxing, pleasant, pleasing, understood, beautiful, peaceful, soothing, effervescent, organized, unencumbered, "natural"... Do Flip Philips, Lucky Thompson, Paul Gonsalves, Paul Quinnochette, and Bud Johnson belong to this group of the "most underrated"? I adore your selections of the "most underrated". Thanks!

I saw Red Holloway live a couple of times in the '80s, once leading the band that opened for and backed Big Joe Turner at the Parisian Room in LA, the other time at the Jazz Safari in Long Beach with Sonny Stitt. He was a great player. (I enjoyed him more than Stitt in fact, if I may engage in some heresy.)

Never failed to admire Fathead’s tone. That’s my goal on alto. Houston Person has a great catalog and very good production values. Not to say he’s better, but the sonic presentation is vastly better. Great covers of standards. Lockjaw Davis should be on an all-time list along w/Bean, Prez, Jug, Cannonball, Cleanhead, Jeep, Illinois, Bird, both Franks, not necessarily in that order. Great chops by several, but the feeling is set-piece-like, more suited to woodshed. And not ‘saying’ much beyond the saxophone version of speed-talking.

This jazzmen serie "underrated" does not concern many of them; mostly they were some of greatest sidemen or big band men, and here excepted Deway Redman, that I didn't know and I don't know so much jazz, every artist had a great career, smetimes as leader. Warn Marsh, Lucky Thompson unrrated? Ridiculous M.Senator.
