AND ... it's not Lincoln Mark VEE, it's the Lincoln Mark FIVE! ("V" is a Roman numeral.) If you're going to do informative videos about these cars, you really should learn to pronounce their names.
Yes, that's the state of affairs these days when someone does these videos without the proper knowledge. He also centers on the later '70s and missed some of the real luxo barges of the earlier years.
I'd take any one of these land yachts today. My best friend had a 79 Riviera and it's power windows were faster than any I have ever seen to this day. I loved how soft and comfortable the seats were in these 70s luxury cars.
Seen from Europe, the old days gas-guzzlers cars were not just cars, they were the symbol of the United States when it was still "America". Both these cars and the American dream have unfortunately shrunk since. The new "big cars" (SUV) are just big and ugly, they've lost elegance and style.
Sadly they had to ban the sales of Oldsmobile tornados, they would spin so fast the fenders and wheels would fly off in random directions and cause severe damage to to houses and buildings. 😲
For the record, the Seville was not an answer to the 1973 oil crisis, but to the increasing popularity of smaller and more exclusive European cars like Mercedes-Benz. It's development was well underway before the oil crisis...after all, lead times are long in the automotive industry. Bringing an all-new car from conception to market in two years is simply not possible even if they did begin with an existing platform.
The New Yorker Brougham (As in CHRome) also had 4 wheel brakes. Lincoln Mark 5, V=5 in the Roman numeric system. The Stutz Caddy engine displaced 425 cid (7 Litres) it made 180hp. Oldsmobile TORoNADo, NAD as ROD.
Is the guy on the video from outer space?? He managed to mess up all the pronounciations of these cars. It's BR-ohm and Tore-ra-nod-doe not Broh-am and Tornado. He did all this research and can't pronounce the name of the cars. LOL
Wow, this guy is doing great with English as his second language. "Broh-um." "Tornado." "Mark VEE." That being said, I had a 1981 Riv, and it was beautiful car (though too front heavy, and some poor workmanship, IMHO).
I once owned a 1979 Rivera. I really loved that car before, like you mentioned, the poor workmanship took its toll. Did you notice that the narrator in this video mentioned the "digital trip meter" in the Riv while the camera panned down from the digital clock? 😆
THANK YOU, Kevin and MS, for those last two comments! I was cringing and getting more pissed off each time he said those names wrong! I've owned a '79 Lincoln Mark V (Five), and of the 8 Lincolns I've had over the past 30 years, the Mark V was probably my favorite. Most comfortable and luxurious ride ever...
The first front wheel drive car by GM,was the 1966 Olds Tornado, then came the Eldorado in 1967. The 79 Riviera was not the first. This guy needs to do some better research and pronounciation.
Mark 5, not Mark "V". The Mark 4, Mark 3 and Mark 2 preceeded it. Lincoln continued the Mark series well into the 1980s with the Mark 6, Mark 7 and Mark 8.
2:08 The image for the "E platform" is not the E platform (first used in 1963). The picture is the BEV2 platform, developed in 2017 for electric vehicles.
To this day, I look back with fond memories of my 1978 Lincoln Continental Mark V, as one of my two favorite cars. The other was my 1962 Cadillac 62 Coupe. Both were a joy to drive. By the way, I owned them both in the 1990s ... I was only a kid when the Cadillac was new!
The Cadillac with the Phaeton package is not shown in this video, please try again. The 1978 Cadillac Eldorado did not have any engine option, the former 500 cubic in engine was reduced into 425 cubic inches. Please pronounce Roman Numerals as Hindu-Arabic numbers are pronounced (Continental Mark V is a Mark "five"). Thank you for showing some fun cars!.
In 66 Olds division of GM wanted to rival the Rivi, so they came up with a very state out the art version which had a complex chain driven front wheel drive system. It was called the TORO NA DO. NOT TORNADO. WTF R U SERIOUS. To speak of car culture and butcher the names as such in this video is like wearing a tank top tucked into your jeans headed for the golf course! 😝 E for effort
Sir, a good video, but a couple of things for the future. The Mark, is a Mark 5, the V is taken from Roman numerals as the number 5. The Tornado, the A is pronounced as ah no a an A. The Eldorado you showed is a 1977-78. You made it sound like it was the downsized 1979 which would have been your second most expensive car at over 14 thousand to start. Keep up the great work.
This was suggested to me. Way too many errors for me to even finish it. It looks like it was done in Europe. They show some right hand drive cars. I stopped it after the "1979" Eldorado debacle. Yuck.
A V8 1979 Mustang Indy Pace Car listed for over $9,000. If you could find one that was loaded with a.c. It’s retail price was probably over $10,000 and some dealers added a markup premium to them.
At 3:01 into this particular video, I must say this Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham sedan 🚗 is my favourite, Wow just beautiful. The colour is I believe autumn maple. Number 7 in the list as the most expensive American cars from the 1970s. I would certainly love to own such a wonderful classic car as this today in 2021.
My grandfather kept a Jublie Mark with the Cartier clock,my dad was a Mopar man bought mother a brand new New Yorker every 3 years from 73 to 85 the last police car looking 5th Ave.I was in the hood one day drunk guy that was the neighborhood crack-chanic said he had a turbo Riviera told him to go get it and I'll buy it,got it for $700 bucks probably the cleanest car I've ever had for that amount of money, ended up doing a few upgrades from Kirban, but I was the non intercooled non roller motor but after the upgrades it ran pretty good for what it was, never thought I'd see the appreciation for these gems. Both my gramps & dad passed but seeing this almost bought tears to my eyes,I can smell the brand new showroom floor Chrysler leather interior and hear Frankie Beverly playing on our way to the family reunion in Kentucky.🙏
Sedan de Ville just like it was written on the side of the car you showed at 4:16 . it's not a tornado the only thing that blows is your total lack of knowledge about these cars
My dad had one of the '70s New Yorker Broughams. His dream car. It was a land yacht. I was in my late teens, 6'1", about 220lbs. I could just about fully stretch out on the back seat. It was also the first car I had ever seen w/ a digital dash. I thought it was soooo cool until he let me drive one night. On I95 in VA, doing about 60 in a rainstorm. The dash went nuts, the speedo and all of the gauges started flashing up and down. Fortunately it kept running. He took it back to the dealer, he had dealt w/ the same salesman for close to 20 yrs. Seems Chrysler sent all of the dashes to production and claimed they didn't have any spares. They had to give dad a loaner for a month while waiting for the part, then another 2 weeks to get a guy in who could reset the mileage on the new dash to match the old.
No vehicles made by Chrysler had a digital dash until the 1981 - '83 Imperial coupes. The only digital item on anything before that was the clock, or 'chronometer'. New Yorker Brougham K-cars from the 80s did have fully digital dashes...
These were the golden days. I wasn't alive then, however it was great times. Crazy serial killers were around but we have those now too. Cruise slowly and listen to great music.
It would cost too much. Video is out of warranty. Oh, did you notice the fine coachwork on the Blackhawk? Nothing like a 1/4 inch difference in trim height.
Be nice if people who put out these videos actually did research on how to pronounce the car names. It's not Tornado, it's Toronado. And it's not Bro-um, it's BroMmm, one syllable. It's not FAY-TON like some Star Trek phaser, it's faytawn, one smooth word. It's not a Lincoln Mark V, it's a Mark FIVE. Your facts and visuals are excellent, however, so you get props for those.
Lol, it’s not tornado, it’s Toro - nado. It’s not Lincoln Mark V, the V stands for the Roman numeral 5. I guess the rest of the narration is suspect considering those errors are simple to catch. Living in that era I’m surprised at all the mistakes I this narration. But the overall video was entertaining.
These are NOT the 10 most expensive cars of the 70s...by a longshot! One example, the '79 Mark Vee (?) Collectors Series stickered at around $23,000. I hate to knock what took some work, but mispronunciations of classic 70s terms, factual errors and omissions and an obvious lack of subject knowledge. Too bad.
I had a '78 T-Bird Town Landaue. I had two different drivers run into the rear end. Their cars were totaled and the Bird didn't even have a scratch. It was a literal tank.
My grandfather had one of those Chrysler New Yorkers wow that was a beautiful car that car was so comfortable and when you stepped on that accelerator it would pin you you back in the seat smooth ride they just don't make cars like this no more
If you're going to do these informational videos, please learn how to pronounce the names! It's NOT TOR-NAY-DO it's pronounced TOR-AH-NOD-OH. Ir's NOT a Mark Vee, it's a Mark Five!
I still have my Mark V. Bought it brand new with every option including the 460. Pulled the motor & slipped in a 514 crate motor with an AOD Trans. Put in true duel exhaust & tuning for 425 rwhp.
I owned a 1976 Oldsmobile 98 Regency. It came with two anchors and bow and stern lines. It had a 455 cubic inch motor that gave a mighty roar when pushed, but it was so huge, you felt like you were going nowhere fast.
I like how the worst Lincoln is the most expensive. The Mark 3 was a bit smaller, it had a 7.5L V8 producing 365HP and it had the best build quality of them all. Mark 5 was the biggest and heaviest with the smallest engine 6.6L V8 and with only 180HP.
