It's absolutely crazy when you think about the fact, that Niki Lauda would've won a season in which he was nearly burned to death, if he would have just driven the last race in Japan and got some points. He stopped his car after a few laps though because there was just too much rain, which is absolutely understandable especially in his case. He was in a burning car for almost a minute and returned just 6 weeks later. Hunt just won by one point in that season because he finished 3rd in Japan (or rather because Lauda was half dead in the hospital and missed out on 2 races). Hunt had 69 points, Niki Lauda had 68 points. It still amazes me to that day how dedicated Niki Lauda was.

Tbh Hunt drove as close to perfection as he could that season. The Ferrari was faster and Hunt had some real bad luck early on and capitalized perfectly on Nikis crash. Niki would've won easily without his accident but given the circumstances Hunt deserved it just as much

what they meant here by "earliest", was the earliest 'date' in the year that a world champion was crowned. Clark in 65 clinched it on August 1st, which was a record at the time. Mansell in 92 won it with more races to go, but it was on August 16th. Schumi in 2002 did it on July 21st , which is the earliest date a driver won the title.

Fangio's win at the old Nürburgring in 1957 was quite arguably the greatest performance in Formula One history in a single race. His fastest lap of 9'17"'4 during the race more than 8 seconds faster than his own pole position time of 9'25"6 is without a single doubt the greatest fastest lap of all times in motorsport history.

Herbert's victory is something special. Not only fans of Hebert or Stewart Racing were celebrating Hebert's victory, every F1 fan and the entire paddock was cheering for Herbert. When the teams and theirs fans starts cheering for their rival, you know something special is happening. It's like Kimi's last Victory in the USA or Verstappen's -victory- extraordinary race in Brazil 2016.

What about another Ringmeister, Jacky Ickx? In 1967 he qualified is F2 car in 3rd place in the dry, ahead of the F1 field. He thus outqualified the likes of Stewart, Brabham, Gurney or Mclaren in their more powerful F1 cars. Only Hulme and Clark managed faster times. In the race, as he was running in F2, he had to start behind all of the F1 cars, but after four laps he had already overtaken 12 F1 cars and was running in 5th until suspension failure took him out. His last F1 win in 1972 fittingly came at the Nurburgring when he utterly dominated the race in his unfancied Ferrari 312 B2. Ickx achieved a Grand Chelem - taking pole position, leading every lap and setting the fastest lap. He is one of only 4 drivers to ever do so on the Nordschleife, the others being Ascari, Fangio and Clark.
