My siblings and I lived in Flag Projects in the 70s. We have many memories of the struggles with a single mom. However, we all became successful as a result of that struggle and the iron fist of our single mom. I’m extremely proud of my sister who became a doctor and is now a Captain in the Navy, my brother who graduated the Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD, myself a proud Navy Veteran who continues to serve our Veterans daily, and my youngest brother who is an IT Specialist. It’s all about survival and choices. I thank God there are some of us who grew up in those projects who made it. The families that are still there have opportunities as well to make it. I always tell young people not to allow their environment to dictate their future.

Lived there for 40 years. Outside of a few decent neighborhoods, Baltimore is a perpetually decaying shithole rife with an open air drug trade, abject poverty and a government that couldn't care less. Hurts to say, but leaving was the best decision I ever made.

Yes it is! Only place I ever lived where when living in a Penthouse apartment on top of a commercial building, you could look out the front and see what you normally do in a busy, nice business district. People going to work in business casual or nicer clothes, nice landscaping, and a few restaurants and shops. Out the BACK WINDOWS it was Crack deals, hookers, gang fights, and bullet holes all up the building to the 4th floor. We had to reinforce our bathroom window in case someone started shooting up in the air and hit it, like they sometimes did. I'll never go back for any reason. You couldn't pay me enough. The people aren't very nice either.

@@vincec.202 You are correct! We visited the city during the Super Bowl run/parade. We were SHOCKED to see people selling drugs in the open and inside of the McDonald's!! The police were all standing around talking to each other like they were on lunch break. It was unbelievable!! Two people fighting and no one bothered to stop them including the police! I nearly cried by how kids were on the streets during school hours. Now I see why they allow people to stay on corners and clean windshields without the owners permission. When we returned home everyone thought we were lying!!

I live in Lexington terrace from 1968 to 1980 not a good place to grow up. Children who grow in the projects are like kids who live in countries where they have wars you become traumatize by all the violence and then it become a Normal part of life .I never like living there .no child should have to worry about getting hurt or killed out side playing with other kids .I was glad when these buildings were destroyed .
@robertpreskop4425
@robertpreskop4425 6 лет назад
antonio Overton the buildings themselves had nothing to do with it. They were home to poor people who were pushed aside and forgotten by our society. Lack of good job opportunities nearby led to the rapid decline of these housing projects.

The Power Plant , Club Choices and Paradox are about the only 3 Clubs in Baltimore and all 3 are hole in the Wall Places, Power Plant might be a little step above than the other 2, everyone knows Washington D.C has much more of a variety of Nightlife even in the PG County, Montgomery County DC Suburbs u have a good selection of Nightclubs, not to even mention the GeorgeTown District in D.C, People are so scared to venture into Baltimore at night that's probably why the city never had a real hot nightlife, People bypass Baltimore for either D.C or Philly

I grew up in Baltimore projects, Lexington Terrace Mulberry Street building. During the 70's and 80's, there ccomplished was a lot of crime. There was also a lot of good people as well. I would not change my past, it made you grow up and learn to be aware of your surroundings at all times. Not like these sheep walking around today looking down at their phones waiting to be victims.

I have been through a few of these projects. My father's family was from Gilmore Homes and I had family in Cherry Hill as well. I know it was rough, but as a child in the 70's, I didn't know how bad it really was. I remember dating a sister from Dolphin and Argyle in the 90's and seeing 6 & 7 year olds out in the streets in early am. I love Baltimore, it's a great place to be from.

I remember when Murphy Homes was first built. I used to watch them build Murphy homes when we were coming home from church on Sunday. I remember Murphy Homes more than any other project because one balcony served two apartments. The divider on the balcony between the two units was a brightly colored rippled plexiglass slab. When I was a kid the buildings looked so pretty. Over the years from a distance I watched those buildings turn into extreme hell holes. All demolishing the highrise slums did was change the density of the criminal elements in the areas. With the demise of the projects two things happened. Lower density public housing made it slightly easier for police to deal with the criminals in the ghettos where nothing changed. In the areas near "Little Italy" developers came in to build luxury condos and luxury apartments for rich folk. When you see the white lady in jogging shorts and a pony tail running along the street gentrification has entrenched itself. People don't see it yet but little battered Baltimore is quietly gentrifying. I grew up in Baltimore when living a good distance from Downtown and the projects was safe. By the time Baltimore had turned into Lebonon By The Bay I had moved to Texas. I got a good job in the Baltimore area so I came back. I moved way out into the county. I also seldom look back. Half my friends growing up like me went to college did well and moved way out into the county. Many of my friends did well enough to build their own houses so far into the county it takes an hour to drive there. The other half my friends from Baltimore growing up died of HIV \AIDS, are homeless on the streets, are in prison or were shot to death. It was depressing seeing how so many good big strong men ruined their own lives by doing drugs and engaging in crime. I walked away and never looked back. I'm disabled. I am not a strong muscular man. I am a geek, a nerd. I get out of breath running for the bus. Some of these guys I grew up with could bench press my body weight all day and never break a sweat. I ended up going to college for computer science graduating with a 4.0 GPA and walking into a great paying career. For the life of me I don't know why some of the big strong dudes I grew up with on the same streets could not do the same. I'm autistic. Back when I was a kid most of the kids picked on me saying I was mentally ill, retarded whatever. Surely if my dumb butt could be a success they could too. I just don't understand! Back in my childhood I lived in Rosemont. Today Rosemont is the inner circle of hell. Back when I was a kid 65 years ago Rosemont was so safe you could and did go to sleep on your porch listening to Chuck Thompson on the radio giving Orioles Game play by play. Rosemont had new schools. James Mosher, Lafayette Elementary and Calverton Junior High before it became a shit hole trainings school for Future Imates Of StatePrison. (FIOS)

I live here. It is easy to rag on this city. But it has its Charm. Hence, “charm city”. The separation of poor and middle class areas is fairly apparent, but also, you can be in little Italy one sec, make a wrong turn, and be in the ghetto. All this just blocks from the nightlife of the harbor and fells point, which are great fun. I think these adjacent dichotic areas cause a lot of the violence, mostly for no reason. There are many areas in east and west bmore that are mainly poor, but like I said, the nice areas have some badly placed ghetto blocks that can cause some trouble if you don’t act right or know where you going. But I like this city. It gets a bad rap from crime. Give it a shot, just know what u doing and be respectful. The people may just surprise you. I also lived in Philly for three years in 2005-2008. I love that city too. And I can tell you, you can say all the same things about philly, and almost any other mid-to-large city, than u can about bmore. Maybe a little bit better definition and separation of good/bad areas in philly, but some are similar. Crab cakes and football...that’s what we do! You’ll love em both.

I grew up in the Flag House Projects. My mother and father moved in when the Projects were first built, and I was a baby. There were just as many white people as they were blacks. We grew up in a time where we had fathers living with the family...yes your real father. It wasn't unusual to see someone's father going to work, or sitting at the dinner table with the family. Those were the best times for me, with a lot of good memories to look back on. Then in came the Welfare System, and changed the way they wanted you to live in these Projects. They made it hard for the father to remain in the home without having the rent escalate. So the whites and some blacks started moving out to buy homes. But most of the blacks stayed. But by staying and more black families were moving in...things once again changed to make it even harder. The Welfare System destroyed the black families by making it seem better to have the father or the working man of the home, removed, and away from the home in order to now live in these Projects. Because the father could not be in the home without the rent going up...if the mother was working or not, the Welfare System did not care. They were pushing for it to be for the mothers with children only. Some families did stay together, as long as they could, in spite of it all. And in spite of all the dealing with the break up of families, we still had a lot of good times.................Until...............Martin Luther King was killed. That's when all hell broke loose. And Flag House never recovered from that. Then the drug scene took over and the good times were no more. The rest is history...The End.

Well said; I lived in the projects until I was 5yrs old then I moved in with my grandparents. Father disappeared ; stepdad in the Cut most of the time. Moved from West Balto. In the early 60's 600 Blk of Streeper St. 3 blks from the tracks and the hood. Lots of fights all the time. Robbed at night point beatdown a few times. Then came the "Riots" real riots not like that civil disobedience shit that happen in 2012. Grandparents both died leaving me on the streets by myself. I decided to ho in the Army. Seemed safer to me. Came back after 3 years things changed for the worse, the end, moved to Miami things hot much better. Oh my the way I am a white man. Just sayin

Paramedics I knew in the 1980's often wouldn't go in Lafayette Housing without police backup. They faced being shot at, not being allowed into the elevators and people stealing out of the ambulance. I had a friend there. First time I'd ever seen a roach. Or rather roaches everywhere. I was freaked out. My friend would step on them with bare feet or her hands an move on. I kept thinking... people should never have to live like this. People should never have to accept living like this.

I grew up in DC & PG County, but I’ve been living out Baltimore for a year now (Cherry Hill) and you definitely have to be careful. Know your surroundings and be aware cause it can get bad real quick. Other than that I love the city man. One day things will turn around for the better, but it’s up to us the residents to do so. Cause the government not going do it for us. I understand why some people left and I don’t blame em.

People act like violence isn’t everywhere. It may not be as much as Baltimore but it only takes one opportunity for it to be you and that can happen anywhere.

I worked at University of MD hospital trying to do home medical visits, sometimes on my own time, and teach doctors to see the whole person. Treating AIDS,IVDA, cancer, diabetics when the projects had been written off by the establishment. The amount of hostility aimed at me by young men for "comming onto my world" to treat their families burned me out of risking myself anymore. They didn't make it safe for nurses doctors or social workers to do any real good. The hospital gave up on allowing us to go because we were not safe. Blame yourselves.

I’ve lost so many friends to drugs, and prison it’s scary. I believe I have 1 friend from when I was in elementary, who is still alive. I lived in O’Donnell heights for two years as well, and that place was rough.

I live in the Baltimore suburbs in Howard County, MD. I remember back in the late 80s early 90s my Mom driving me and my brother for our doctors appointments at Johns Hopkins Hospital and we would have to driving past the Lyfiett Courts High Rises to get there since Hopkins is located unfortunately in the middle of the hood . Man, by the 1980s and 1990s the high rises were the creepiest buildings to look at. The caged linked fencing was the only thing keeping people secure on those top floors made the buildings look like a prison. You could see (as you can see in some of the pictures for #10 Lyfiett Courts images) people standing out on the long open walkway balconies, behind the caged link fencing. The people looked like caged up animals behind the fencing. That is what was so off settling about it and made it creepy to look at. The high rises were just gloomy and ugly looking too. By the mid 90s they were finally demolished. I went to Johns Hopkins Hospital parking garage rooftop parking lot with my Mom, Dad, brother, and Grandmother to watch the "Implosion in Baltimore" of the Lyfiett High Rises. I was so glad to finally see those ugly high rises go bye-bye.

I lived in Bmore and was heavily active in the music biz in the late 80s and early 90s. I Dj’ed and work at Volcanoes night club on Greemount Ave. I saw a lot going on around there, I used to hang in Summer Set Projects, Lafayette sometimes and been around all the other projects. My co-workers lived in Summer Set and Lafayette so I kicked it with them sometimes. I knew Mac 10 from the Mac Black Mafia (YBM). I did a little music production consulting for him and he came to my open mic sometimes. I lived in East Baltimore , Harford Rd, Patterson Park and on the West Side as well. I was all over. Yes drugs and shootings were common place. I witnessed a few of the drug wars during those times and even got caught in the cross fire more often than I cared for. The good side is that the culture and music is awesome though and I love my Bmore fam. I was a Dj and record store manager and owner. I saw a lot. I never had drama because I was chill, minded my biz and kept it moving. A lot of crime families and organizations were involved in the music biz so, yea I saw some things. I once helped a friend move his family out of Murphy Homes Projects. People were dropping bricks and bottles off the roof. Something commonly done when people move. While working at one record store I met a NY cat names Waah he told me about this Emcee he was working with and how he was gonna be huge. I invited him to my open mic out in Good Now Apartments. They came and that’s how I met Waah and DMX of the rough ryders before they became famous. There was war at that time between Baltimore and the NY Boyz so DMX and Waah were a little nervous being a room full of Bmore Emcees. DMX rocked the mic and challenged all the emcees and they bounced pretty quickly though. Lots of history

Now Ive lived in Cherryhill & Westport most of my life. Its interesting he didnt mention the Projects in Westport Kent Street....before they were torn down they were off the chain too. While living here it doesnt seem as bad as they say but of course the rare of crime is high. I just pray a prayer of protection aroubd myself & family. I'm one of the lucky few and moved out of Baltimore City, been shot at many times , jumped, robbed, knocked off of my motorcycle , seen innocent people shot, children shot, old people shot, had "people jump into the back seat of my car at stop signs going home from work ( I would run them after that ) I have seen it all living in Baltimore City . I was never part of the drug scene but saw the after effects of it, in 1999 after 3 of the local prostitutes were found dead at the end of our ally on the train tracks we decided to get the hell out and we lived in an "upscale" neighborhood near the 2 brand new Stadiums , I knew a lot of the police and was told many times that the reason 90 % of the crime never made the news was that it is bad for the tourist industry ( the inner harbor, football, baseball the Arena I still call the Arena "The Arena" ) I worked on Jewelers Row and dressed like a bum to lessen my chances of being a statistic . Baltimore is not only a war zone but a shithole, their "Mayor" is on the run as I type this for embezzlement, stealing public funds, and God knows what else. I'm glad we moved and will never go back, you can keep " The City that Breeds" and everything that goes with it One of the top 5 corrupt Cities in the United States

the problem is the people, change them change the City. The fish rots from the head down right, so get the corrupt leaders out, bring God back and pray for a better way. But Start with Prayers.

I raised my family in Brooklyn Homes, aka 10th Street, in Baltimore during the 1980's and drove a cab mostly at night because the money was much better at night in West Baltimore for twenty (20) years. I was one of the very few Cab Drivers that would go into Cherry Hill at night and never could figure out what everybody was so afraid of. Don't go looking for trouble and there won't be any trouble.

Being born and raised here I never realized how violent it was until I moved away. I knew all of those places and the rep they had but its was just normal to me because I didn’t know anything else.

I've been to Baltimore, if you seriously say it's a good city to love in you have no standards at all. Take any street and you can be within a neglected, rough and ragged down neighbourhood within a mile radius.

Change the thought process in these people and these areas will change for the better! Nothing can be done to help, until people have changed their way of thinking! You got to be willing to accept and respect other ways, people of all races, and backgrounds! Life is precious and can be short, don’t go through it, like it don’t matter, yet cry for help! People help people, when the Congress elites won’t! But you got to Unite and love thy neighbor!

Wes Moore came from Murphy Holmes and they were demolished in 2000. Most of my cousins live in those Projects accept Murphy and Perkins. I pray for them everyday 💯

Little that people know projects developed in INDIA. Over population in those countries of course adapted by America for the poor. Game plan. In the 1800 a senator from New York said, the best way to get rid of the poor ..was to put one against each other.. drugs, crime, rape, etc.

Seeing this breaks my heart. 99% of my family still live there and my parents and family grew up in these part (including the #1 spot). Without any real attention from the government, places like this will inevitably crash. Unemployment will rise, crime will rise and cops who are over worked will become criminals themselves. It’s a chain reaction that will continue because of skin color. Baltimore is not a “pull yourself up by the boot strap” type of scenario. This is a natural disaster that is over looked because of drugs, the types of people living there and no one in power not giving a damn until its election season. This is a god damn shame.
