The hardest part of owning pigs for me is that i care for them so much, i do everything i can for them to be happy and healthy, and yet you cannot control a problem randomly spurring up. I feel so guilty even if one of them just has dry feet. Despite all of the difficulties, im so happy i have the honor to own them :)

Funny story on the smell point - we like to give our pigs a sniff while we're holding them. They have a nice fresh pig scent!

I always said my heart pig (coronet silky agouti) smelled like toasted cardboard. I miss her & her scent so much! ☺️

Good info. I read a comment posted to a video recently where the poster commented that it was “unreasonable” to expect pet owners to be able to fund an emergency $500 vet bill. I disagree totally. Cat dog pig horse whatever can and will require vet attention. If you can’t manage a $500 vet bill don’t get a living breathing pet. Maybe a goldfish or pet rock is for you.

Pets are a privilege, not a must I say. If you aren't ready or willing to keep them safe and healthy, why get them?!

Sadly, they’re the fascination of lower income homes as well. I’m not wealthy by any means, & always share now that one needs to have a solid $2k-$10k per pig, for the life of that pig for proper care. And that means be able to fund an emergency vet bill of $100-500 per pig at any given time. Sadly, vet costs are killing many ppl’s dreams of having pets or more pets. We need more insurance co. options, lower monthly rates (esp for dogs & cats) & this would also mean more animals can be rescued. My 10 yr old rescue dog needs her 2nd dental cleaning. Around age 5 for her, it was $600? Now we’re told $1700! I’m livid with the seemingly unreachable rising vet costs.

The hardest thing for us was finding an exotic vet who was knowledgeable about guinea pigs. This might be different if you live in a city, but since we live in a rural area it has been very difficult.

I love that Guinea Pigs need company...it's just nice to think they have a friend with them...1 of the reasons why I decided to get them The cleaning is alot but a way to make it easier is to get a bigger cage, the bigger the cage the more the poops spread and the less cleaning or a hay box can have most of the poops but the whole cage still needs to be done at least once a week Not just the cost of the vets but the actual care that you have to do when they become ill...it's scary and you want them better so it's very stressful and you have to make sure they are eating and getting their medication and that sometimes means getting up in the night to give them their care

Very good video, should be required viewing at shelters. I’ll only say it’s an understatement to say they’re “somewhat” messy! They are little poop machines, and I am always amazed at how quickly they can mess up their homes. I have boars , though, so maybe that makes a difference. That being said, I love them all dearly and am grateful to have adopted such endearing creatures.

Thank you, also a consideration is what to do with your piggies if you go on vacation. Finding a place to board them can be difficult.

This is a big one!! Even a weekend trip requires someone to be able to care for them. It's not something I thought about before our first pig. It's been years now & we now have multiple small animals so theres basically no getaways for us!

I think about volunteering my services in my neighborhood FB group just so no one leaves their piggies alone. No $ to vacay, so I could help, & I’m sure I could ask a small fee of like $5-10/day & ppl would prob be happy to pay that. Or I could check on them. I feel weird asking tho. I’m so much of a piggie lover. lol

@@CapysGardenShop that's a cool thing to do especially if you have experience with Guinea pigs or any other small animal. I personally have a rabbit & Guinea pigs. I dont have many local friends & I have little family nearby. I'd want someone to be able to come twice per day to care for them. Idk a single person who would be willing or able to do that unless it was for maybe one day. I'd absolutely pay someone to do it but there's nobody that could which means that I will never be able to go away with myself & my teenagers together. One would have to be left behind & I wouldn't consider that. It stinks but it's our responsibility. Anyway, id be over the moon if I found someone offering those services!

I have 2 boars that are 5 months old and their personalities are as different as night and day . One Hates it when you put your hands in the cage to pet him but once he is taken out he doesn’t mine being held and pet. The other one prefers to be pet in the cage but doesn’t like to be held or touched when out of the cage. There definitely is no one size fits all approach to taming. I have learned to follow their lead and and respect their boundaries and accept their likes and dislikes. By doing this their trust in me is growing each day

Great video Abby. To the point! I think everyone who gets a pet should watch a video like these about the animal they want. Their sweet and lovable but they're also a lot of work. It evens out for me but for some people, not so much.

They smell so nice I sniff buts yes I do🥰🥰🥰 I have them allmost 50 years yess I am that auld😂🤣😂😜😅😅😀😁😁😁 I learn a lot Even nowadays never to old to learn.I love the way you keep them 😘😘😘 A carpenter made a wooden villa for my 8 gpigs he used to make human homes and sheds 🙏👌👍he just was 82 love him he is volunteer at the farm and helps alzheimer persons he makes bird cages and I am a shepherd at that same farm; but have a flock of gpigs in my home

that cage tray would not be even large enough for a hamster. In North America the minimum amount of unbroken floor space for a hamster is 450sq inches. Pets need way more space than most humans are willing to give up.

So I've been wanting a Guinea pig for like 3 yrs now. I was wondering if it would be cheaper to make my own cage instead of buying a giant cage. And is it ok if I have a smaller cage if I take them out frequently?

I adopted my first pig from people who didn't want to commit to him. Not only did he live in a tiny pet store cage, but he was lonely :( As soon as I got him, I adopted another piggy, and I was lucky that they loved each other immediately. I use fleece, and I have one question about it- whenever I wash it, there is always hay bits in the washing machine after. I can't dump it outside, and I often struggle to get it all off the fleece. Anybody know how to prevent it getting stuck? I was think of buying a hay box.

It took me a few yrs of fleece or pine bedding to just go with padding, then kirkland puppy pads, & offer fleece padding under the water bottle & offer a large fleece cuddle cup, which i place under the huge nat geo green w/ picket fence home (no longer sold). I change the puppy pads 1-2x’s daily. I shake out the fleece & flip them & wash those EOD. This is the only way I can keep the cage the cleanest.

Also, I have a C&C grid custom cage, and one of my piggies likes to chew the bars. I've tried willow sticks, and other homemade type DIY toys, but he seems to like it when it's held up by something, so how do I stop this?

No, he is not alone I have another male guinea pig. I think it might be because he’s bored.He’s definitely not lonely and I’ve tried Willow sticks.

Most people who say that have only tried their guinea pig with 1 other guinea pig or have tried introductions improperly etc.

Is it really true that having just ONE guinea pig is "unacceptable"? Aren't cats and dogs social animals just as much, and it's not frowned upon to have just onedog or cat? I've worked with quite a few guinea pigs that have been all kept alone and they thrived in human interaction just as much as when they did have a friend guinea pig, so I'm not so sure about this claim...

They survive alone but they truly thrive with companionship. There is no reason to only have 1 Guinea pig. They are completely different than dogs and cats, so isn't comparable. They are a caged animal who can't be with you all around the house. Is a lonely life for a Guinea pig by itself and realistically people are not going to be interacting with them enough to ever replace another same species friend. If you have ever matched a lone Guinea pig with a friend, it is an amazing thing. Velvet I adopted alone, she lived in a cage by herself for a year, would never leave her dome hut apparently except for food and water. Once I took her in and put her even just near other pigs she came to life, now with other pigs she is 100 percent a different pig. They need to be near other pigs at minimum for socialization and comfort. Why not provide the best life and why argue against one of their basic needs.

As much as I agree that having two piggies can help some guinea pigs open up more and that it makes sure they don't get depressed if you're rarely at home, I just don't see why is it a MUST when you can provide them with enough company by spending your time with them... Currently I own just one little granny piggy (she's around 6-7 years old) and she is free roaming around my house, zero cage just toys around the house, a litterbox and a hideout to sleep in. She is always energetic and rarely stays for a longer time in the hideout, zooms, popcorns and is super talkative even when it's not feeding time...so i don't know why would you say that "They are a caged animal who can't be with you all around the house." If you could further explain where is your mindset coming from I would be glad, because so many guinea pig owners seem to repeat the same statement and aren't open for conversation at all

@@accountbns6012 even the most out going Guinea pigs still benefit from another Guinea pig who understands them, is with them 24-7 etc. We can bond with them and give them attention but they still get other needs met from their own kind. I have adopted many Guinea pigs over the last 10 years and every pig has changed once they met another Guinea pig, changed for the better. There is always room for improvement when owning them and allowing them to know their own kind is an important one.

Is always interesting how the only people who believe having 1 pig is okay are the people with 1 pig. No one with multiple pigs ever says they think pigs are fine living alone. Why you ask, because you see first hand how they interact and communicate and need each other. Would you want to live in a world with no other human to understand you? Doubt it.
