For me, the drone shot looking down at the road makes the snow-covered trees look like individual snowflakes. Very nice.

Great tips, especially good reminder about leaving your camera in a consistently cold or warm environment. Do not keep taking the camera in cold weather then back into warm to take pictures. Lenses will fog. I learned that in Winnipeg Manitoba a few winters ago. I left my camera bag in the trunk so the warm weather or temp change will not fog my lens so I can take more pictures when I move to another location. I have loved that picture of yours with the WIld horses running in the snow. I just assumed you went out to photograph the horses. A perfect example of having your camera with you and ready. Thanks, Mads.

Ha that funny little wheel :-) I usually put one of my summer tires as spare for winter and vice-versa. Gets you a few more miles than that toy wheel and you don't need a mechanic right away. Good video! Here in Germany we also got plenty of snow in some reagions which I was waiting for for years now

One of the first wintervideos I got that gave me the tipps I need. It is good to see what an awsome photographer is making from an average scene: gold! In most cases we don't have the possibility to go to epic places when it snows, just the forest near by. And for me its so hard to find compositions in this very busy scenes. Well done with this video! Love it!

Just coming back from my local spot in the Pyrenees, where there was soooo much snow in the last couple of days...paradise for photographers! Great tipps regarding the strong subject, I think this can be a tricky part when surrounded by such landscapes, your first wish is to embrace the most of it all, hence loosing focus sometimes on interesting subjects. Thanks for the awesome work !

Mads had to laugh at your excitement about getting snow. I am excited this year because here in Ottawa Canada our winter so far has been mild and we only have a small couple of centimeters of snow on the ground. Most years we would have had 5 or 6 snowfalls of 5 to 15cm and a snow base of 20 to 40 cm of snow on the ground. Love the video and picked up a number of ideas. Thanks...oh and happy to mail you snow if it would help!

Just coming across your comment now, Svetlana, and just so you know, many of us feel the same way. I used to have great hopes for our species, and am frankly gobsmacked by the tide of irrationality, paranoia and willed violence we see currently washing over everything. Still, we do what we can. I try to be as kind and charitable as my limited budget allows, and with my photography, if I’m lucky that day, I fitfully bring a little beauty into the world that didn’t exist before. And someday, perhaps not too soon, people will come to their senses and things will improve. They always do, in the end. Take care.

Just could not find a composition, huh? The final image is awesome in my eyes! Also, I cannot wait to hear your thoughts on the Tamron 28-200. I am very much considering buying it, because I realized on my last vacation that I often wanted to have more than the 75 mm my current lens can offer me on hiking trips. I always thought wide-angle was what you have to use, but while making slow progress in my photography skills, I got A LOT better shots by not trying to shoot everything in a single frame. Or by doing longer focal length panoramic shots to get a wide view and enough compression at the same time. Much of my progress in the last years is, at least in part, thanks to you. Thank you and keep it up!

A puncture is always a bad thing, but in winter is is even more sad. At least you had an emergency tire (as I do in my car), often there is only a puncture spray/gel in modern cars to save some space. But it does not work always, I have two colleagues which both had no luck with this. (one even made a mess with the fluid :-P )

Hi Mads, excellent video. First point, well taken, about a pronounced subject. I remember doing a "detail" photograph of the wall behind (lower Yosemite Falls) one late summer, "with no water coming down, and a little girl asking her mother what I was taking a picture of? It made me stop and think, "what was I taking a picture of"? Also, "when I was growing up" injected into the wonderful creative world of (Photographic Art) 1974 - 2000, composition really took a back-seat to the technical aspects of the medium. I was so happy to hear you guys talk about and consider it again. But I must say it can go too far, to where it actually becomes your subject; vary down letting. I'm still one who leans towards the emotional impact of photographs, ie: low contrast - calmness, high contrast - dramatics, color combo's etc; creating the effect with your subject even before the exposure. But that's just me.

Very good video. When you shoot snow, do you incline the editing to b&w generally?

Excellent tip Mads, and your lighthouse image at 7:00 really is a stand out image and epitomises the bleakness of winter. Super excited to see your subscription count edging closer to 100k as well.

There's a nice small solitair (oak?)tree, on 2min30 during your introduction behind your hand, with snow standing in front of the pines behind it. Looks like a great subject. Did you shout it?

Ok Mads. I love your photos. BUT it can be so frustrating to follow someone on a photo walk that has "the eye". That eye that instantly catches the right composition that once they SHOW me what they saw, I can only say "DUH!". Over time I am actually learning how to "see" photos so when I see someone (you) who finds and captures such great images, I still have hope in finding "the eye". P.S. Tip on cold temps and your camera.... as soon as you get back in your car after a walk, remove the SD card right then.... your car is going to be close to the temp of your camera so it should be safe.... SD cards are mostly waterproof so when you get home, you can pop it in your computer and see your master compositions instantly!!!

The greater risk from cold cameras being brought into warm environments is getting mold or mildew in a lens. The glass elements will be really cold and immediately fog in warm rooms. That moisture, which will likely also be inside the lens can cause mold to begin growing and that can turn into a costly problem. As you say, leave the cold gear in the bag for several hours to gradually warm up. Another option is to seal the camera and lens in a plastic bag in the cold and then allow it to warm up gradually. Lastly, something I do is to save all the little desiccant packs that come inside packages that are shipped and I keep a dozen or so of them inside a pocket in my bag. They quickly absorb any moisture inside the bag, preventing condensation and when they get damp, dry them in a warm (NOT hot) oven later so they can be reused.

Yes, you’re absolutely right. Last weekend I took some photos of awesome magical winter scenery but they all sucked. I hadn’t managed to find the “Anchor “ or the one focal point 🥴

Mads, do you find any filters useful in your winter images? 8" of fresh snow coming to the Adirondacks this weekend so I'll put your tips to good use. Thanks!

When shooting in cold weather, before putting your camera in the bag remove the battery. This way there is no chance of accidentally turning it on.
