I'm your host, Darren Van Dam!
Tired of looking for good movies to watch on Netflix, Amazon Prime or other streaming services? Every week I recommend a handful of the best movies on Netflix, Amazon, HBO etc. so my subscribers never run out of good movies to watch on streaming. Spending 10 minutes watching one of my videos could save you hours of searching, hours that you could otherwise spend watching good movies on streaming that you otherwise might not have ever watched or even known about.
Thanks for watching!

Black hawk down. The part where the medic is dragging another man across the alley and he is shot in the stomach and trying to kick his feet. I know the soldier who was shot. And Carlos described that exactly like that how he couldn’t walk or stand but knew the danger of “death alley” and tried to help the medic by trying to run and kick his feet. True heroes and a very accurate movie

I joined the Army (at the age of 31, don't do that) on Sept 13, 2001. One of the E7s from Black Hawk Down was still in at that time, actually. Anyway, we went to Iraq in March of 2003 and it was still pretty chaotic. I wound up convoying down to Fallujah to take some parts to one of my people (I was a communications soldier, but there aren't front lines like there used to be so everyone is infantry when they have to be). Fallujah at that time was what you saw on the news - it was...pretty intense. I wasn't fired on, but the convoy in front of us got blown up then took fire so we had to provide cover. Certainly nothing like BHD, but the movie does accurately show the sensation of everything feeling slo mo yet taking only seconds. And having to make decisions before you can blink so you don't shoot a comrade. I don't watch war movies anymore Holy Spider made such an impression on me, and I'm a voracious consumer of serial killer tv / movies / books. I cannot imagine what women in Iran must cope with, and the police just ignoring the murders because they're women, and prostitutes at that. Just an incredible series. And Heat, well, what else can be said? One of my top 5 all time movies. Michael Mann did another all time favorite of mine, Manhunter. Captured the book (Red Dragon) so very perfectly and is miles better than the more recent movie that was made almost solely so Anthony Hopkins could play Hannibal Lektor again.

@@MackLeeGreen And a big thank you to you too. Yeah basic was tough. I had my son at 29 then stayed home with him for two years, so to call me out of shape would've been charitable. But I made it somehow. It was weird being older than a couple of the drill sergeants though. Mostly the hard part about being so much older when I joined was it destroyed my body. They finally put me out on a medical discharge after six years and I've struggled ever since. But I don't regret it despite everything

"Emily the Criminal" was quite good, saw it in theater. The latest version of "All Quiet on the Western Front" is on my list, haven't gotten to it yet. As an infantryman during the late unpleasantness in Iraq, some "war/conflict" movies are less inaccurate than others, but none are truly "realistic." Not ironically, one of the most "realistic" war scenes is the tug boat/U boat battle in "Benjamin Button." Ma Deuce (M-2 .50cal) fire really does arc like that at medium to long range, and the way the tracers looked at night was fairly accurate.

Re Rush: the racing scenes were quite entertaining. But it's interesting to note that a number of F1 journalists who knew both James Hunt and Niki Lauda during and after their careers commented that it completely misrepresented the relationship between the two men. Even before they got to F1 they were friends, and continued to be so until James's death in 1993.

It's been nearly 30 years and Heat shootout has yet to be rivaled. It's interesting that people who have never heard gunfire, especially automatic gunfire, say how realistic it sounds. It's like an innate feeling in everybody. Kind of like the uncanny valley with true human faces vs imitation ones. Very few directors seem to push for realistic sounding gunfire for some reason. Or maybe it's the corporates above them worried it would turn some film-goers away even though every movie that handles guns realistically does the complete opposite, at least from a ratings effect.

As a combat veteran I find Black Hawk Down to be pretty accurate. There are more military movies that are very realistic, all of the boot camp stuff from Full Metal Jacket, We Were Soldiers is solid, the war stuff in Hacksaw Ridge, and Saving Private Ryan and I'm sure their are more. A guilty pleasure of mine is Heartbreak Ridge, while some of the characters are a little far fetched, they do seem oddly accurate in their resemblence to some I served with (besides me and my brothers made a stop there on our way to Beirut).
@youtubeme7195
@youtubeme7195 Год назад
I was in The Corps back in the mid nineties, and I remember watching "Black Hawk Down" as a unit when it came out. I didn't want to see it, because I remembered the event as it occurred before I joined, and I avoid most war movies. I wasn't combat MOS, but I know through vicarious experience what it's like, and I found what we as a nation did that day to be a travesty. The men were sublime and did what they needed to do and it was a riotous demonstration of US military effectiveness while showing the tragic and tearful, I cried, neglect of the officials towards our servicemembers. Same with 13 hours. GREAT Movies, that hurt to watch. Another that I could tolerate because it's a fiction movie about Aliens is Battle Los Angeles. Which my brother described as "The best Marine Corps propoganda movie ever made." and I said. "That IS what it's like, only without aliens, or IS IT?"

@@youtubeme7195 I don't know if I completely understand your reply, but I understand when someone says that some movies can hurt to watch, I do know of some movies that will 'trigger' me if I watch them. Too often the bureaucrats in our government don't act in a timely manner, and that, either gets us into situations we shouldn't be in or causes problems when we try to get out of them. While I will not eloborate, I will say that my unit had an issue with some ill timed decisions, upper command, that probably caused additional lives lost. 😢 Semper Fi!

@@GregHallArt So you did understand. by "hurt to watch" I simply mean stuff like. . .One of my good friends from boot, Carl Kleinwachter, was one of the first to die at Umm Quassr (pardon the spelling) at the begining of the second gulf war. I am not one of those people, I was geek Marine, but I was Marine, and knowing all of the people I know who fell for reasons I don't understand hurts me. And that's what I mean by "hurts to watch."
@youtubeme7195
@youtubeme7195 Год назад
@@GregHallArt It's informational, but the docudrama movies like blackhawk down, or 13 hours I don't find to be entertainment. It hurts to watch them, while at the same time understanding their value to other people who don't "get it." I volunteered for every deployment for almost 6 years, never went but I am a true believer, and so were many of my friends, and too many of them DID go, and didn't come back the same.

@@youtubeme7195 sorry for your loss! I think you mean Qatar? Everyone who serves honorably, serves a purpose - don't ever think otherwise. I'll admit to being a bit dispappointed with the liberties they took with the source material with AQOTWF. The whole gist of the book and 1930 movie was a worm's eye view of the inhumanity and stupidity of industrialized warfare, the sheer waste of human lives. The addition of the armistence negotiations and the whole "General not surrendering" stuff was not only completely outside the source material, but had real overtones of foreshadowing the rise of Nazism, which of course Erich Maria Remarque could have known nothing about. but wow, the grinding, muddy, ugly mess of WW1 combat...they got that part right.

Darren, maybe you or one of your other subscribers can help me figure out the name of a movie. It was on Tubi a few years back. Best I can recall, a woman driving down the road hits a pedestrian on a country road. She panics and leaves the man on the side of the road but takes his cell phone. A good Samaritan comes upon the scene but doesn't see the pedestrian. The man offers to take the woman to his house to call a tow truck about her car. They get to the mans house and meet his wife. Upon looking at pictures in the couples house, she notices pictures of the pedestrian she hit. The couple were the person's parents and are awaiting a call from him. They call his cell and it rings in the pocket of the woman. That's about all I can remember. Maybe one of the expert movie buffs know this B movie thriller. Thank you!

I've said this in other places, but as someone that lives in a state with a large Somali population (The lead "Pirate" in 'Captain Phillips' was from the Minneapolis Somali community) with Somali next-door neighbors, "Black Hawk Down", while a good movie by its own measure, takes place in Mogadishu but has few or no Somali actors, and just looks wrong. (Put the BHD insurgent actors in "Captain Phillips" and you have a completely different looking movie). When you live around an ethnic community, Hollywood sendups of that culture just don't work. I tried to watch BHD just a little while back and couldn't do it. I'm not a culture warrior or anything like that. It just destroys the verisimilitude of the movie and takes me out of it. "Captain Phillips" actually is more respectful of Somali Culture despite the Somalis in the movie being villains.

"Utøya 22 July" is the far superior re-telling of the terror attacks on the 22th. "22. July" and its awful director is a lackluster part-American hackjob.

@@tekakifukato1492 Yes, I am smart enough to write well-structured questions and sentences, probably because I have to, such is my job, professor of philosophy and logic, but you seem to lack the ability or you are not perceptive enough to spot sarcasm... And that happens, I know that if you're writing, people may not see that it is sarcasm, so you have to go over the top or write a sign, like "/s" at the end of a sentence, or in this case my "question" which was obviously rhetorical.

Your TimeStamp for the Year released is incorrect for the Remake of All Quiet on The Western Front. I'm pretty sure it was 2022.

Not 100% on info., but I do believe former British Special Operators were present and training actors while filming the shoot out scene.

Speaking on the realism of Blackhawk down from a USMC veteran of OIF, it is pretty good, but HBO's series Generation Kill is the best representation.

Probably true, and a good reference, but it’s not a film.

Point taken. Jarhead would be the most realistic interpretation of the USMC in modern times.

Mr Flick Connection the only problem with this list is the fact that Captain Phillips is not, like you said: "EXTREMELY accurate," it is in actuality pretty super inaccurate. Maybe you should've looked up whether the films were actually accurate instead of basing it off of your own experience which is way too limited in probably every instance for you to state that they're actually accurate. But with the Phillips movie, Greengrass made a BUNCH of shit up. To the point that I'm pretty sure members of Alabama crew filed lawsuits against him and the producers. Pretty much everything with Hanks' character is bullshit.
