Solution 1: I would have considered a pressure sensor in the piano stool as well. Not playing for 5 minutes is quite common when studying music or talking whilst at the piano. Detecting if someone is sat at the piano is what you need.
@Geoff_W
@Geoff_W 2 года назад
Reed hates visable wires though. I'm not sure he would be down for a solution like that, and I'm not aware of any battery powered pressure sensors...could maybe run a Arduino with a rechargeable battery pack or something from inside the bench, but to hide the wires would be a lot of DIY and again...not something we have seen much from Reed on (which is good, I value the fact that he is lazy so he finds clever solutions for lazy people 🤣👍)

@@Geoff_W I made my own pressure sensor for our bed that runs on battery, I had a water leak sensor to spare, which has the the electronics seperated from the water detecting part, meaning there is two wires coming out. Cut the wires off and purchased a pressure pad. Hooked it all up, when pressure is Put on the pad the circuit closes and "detects water". Some templating in HA and I have a bed occupancy sensor instead.

This is a great video - very informative. I really like the personal touch of including family members and shots of your house. Regarding "NFC tag: lights off," it seems to me you already had the solution available without having to add additional hardware: "Alexa, turn off all lights." This way, you don't have to be standing in the vicinity of the NFC tag; it will work from wherever Alexa can hear you. You could go even one step further by creating an Alexa routine to trigger the event with something like, "Alexa, bedtime."

Hi Reid, I’m also a HA user, and I have Light Switches that I flashed with ESPHome, on the light switches I set it up so that the light only toggles when the the switch if pressed for less then 1 second (locally controlled on the Sonoff) I then have a separate automation in HA that checks if the button is pressed for longer. In the master bedroom this “long press” is used for switching off all the lights in the house. We haven’t switched off the lights manually or with a app for more than a year! I also use this function in other rooms to open blinds, acknowledge a “status light” etc.. Thanks for the great videos! I have been watching them for a while now and I love you ideas for all kinds of automations!

Over a decade ago I set up a "scene" or "routine" in my insteon hub that turned my car on to warm up when I turned on the master bath exhaust fan between 8:30 and 10 on weekday mornings if the temp was below 50 degrees. If I turn on the exhaust fan at those times, I'm showering and getting ready for work. You should be able to set different actions based on time of day or even based on what some previous action was. So if you turn your nightstand light off after 10:30 it could fire a bedtime routine. If you turn it on before 9am you are waking up and it can fire up your toaster and coffee maker.

Ha! I actually have a 'brush your teeth' reminder already 🤣. I also have a button I made out of an M5 Atom Matrix (5x5 pixel screen built into a button, with wifi) and it shows a countdown timer while I brush my teeth. Pressing the button also flips a switch in home assistant, and if that switch isn't flipped before I turn off the lights while in bed (pressure sensor for bed) my Google assistant tells me I forgot to brush my teeth. It's been a great reminder since it's a habit I just struggle to keep up with otherwise. I could see myself doing something similar when I have kids.

We set up a "School Day Routine" in HA using Time triggers and Trigger ID's. At 6:30am, the LED strips around our kids' beds turn from 1% Red to 5% Green. They know it's okay for them to get up and take a shower. At 7:00, the lights in their bedroom turn Soft White at 20%. At 7:10, their lights turn to 50%, and their Echo says, "It's time to start the day". I'm using TTS in HA to broadcast. The morning goes on with some other reminders (medicine, tea, etc.), and at 7:40 all the light in the house turn on and the Echos broadcast a "5 minute warning." At 7:45 the "Get to the Car" message is given. At 7:50 all thd lights turn off. In addition to the Time Trigger and Weekday Condition, I added a Helper called "School Routine" and use that as an additional Condition. If the kids are on Spring Break or have a day off, I can paused/cancel the Automation at any point.

My all time favorite automation was when I turned on the insteon wall switch to my master bath exhaust fan. if it was between 8:30a.m. and 10:00 a m Monday through Friday (Meaning a quick shower and tooth brushing before getting dressed and leaving for work), and the outside temp was below 50, it started my car. And since my viper smart start would shut the car off after 15 minutes, if i t was below 40 it would turn the car on again after 16 minutes. Add in the space heater turning on in my bedroom and kitchen and the wall heater in the bathroom going on to warm up the rooms I use while getting ready for work, and I was never chilly on cold winter mornings. Keep in mind this was about twelve years ago, and it wasn't easy to get insteon and viper to talk to each other. I had to set up a dedicated email address to receive the insteon notification and autoreply to another address through an email filter to trigger an IFTT action script. Eventually I was going to have my coffee grind fresh beans and brew a lot and turn on some other appliances based on when I turned off my alarm in the morning, but then I sold that house.

This is a bit older video, but you having the Broadlink Wi-Fi smart button in it reminded me to ask. I have one, but I can't get it to stay connected. My router, an Asus RT-AX86U, the remote button, and the S3 hub are all within 10 feet of each other even. I tried new batteries, moving the hub closer to where the button mainly gets used, and closer to the router. If you see this comment, does anyone have any suggestions? I really like the thing. When it works, it's awesome. Unfortunately, I spend more time reconnecting it than using it.

Automation is a joke. A 1980s Teddy bear has more tech. Turning lights on and off, seeing who is at the door, instead of walking 10 steps. My so called smart lights work 50% of the time, and when Alexa turns stupid i just turn them off by hand and how the hell does my barking dog make the lights turn on. I have come out of my bedroom in 4 in the morning to find all the smart lights on. The ring doorbell, notifies us about the time the person at the door thinks were not home and starts to leave. I'm retired and I build robots, been an engineer for 3 decades and i have more fights over this stupid tech that should be far easier and more universal. Its about time for AI tech that works with everything. My favorite, laying in bed, Turn off bedroom lights....One goes off, one goes to 50%, ok turn off lights again, wow so glad i didn't walk 4 feet to turn it off.

You've probably solved this by now, but for anyone else that comes across this: Make a toggle helper, e.g. "Good Night Activated". In your Good Night routine, set that toggle helper to "on" In your other automations you want to prevent after you've gone to bed, add a condition of "state" "Good Night Activated" "off" Add another automation to turn the toggle off at an appropriate time (or add it to your "getting up" automation, if you have one)

For me I can shave the turning all the lights off pro problem with an automation that I use every night that also locks all the doors sets the AC at the right temperature for bedtime turns on the ceiling fan in the bedroom at a certain speed tells me the forecast for the next day and also tells me to sleep well really isn’t that hard as I put my exterior lights in one group in my interior lights in another group I just refer to those in the automation which is by she who shall not be named and it works perfectly every night I tell it that it’s time to sleep and she Hass who shall not be named takes care of the rest

There's no need to operate the robot vacuum yourself, just automate it to run every night when everyone is sleeping. It'll be better!

How would I create an automation for my Google Nest protect smoke and carbon dioxide detector to trigger a set color on led lighting?

I do the whole house lights shutoff by grouping all the lights together under " house lights" and then it's easy enough to tell Alexa to turn them all on (heard a noise) or off after the females in the house leave every single light on at night or in the morning.

Bedtime is easy. Two pieces of cardboard, foil connected to two wires and some weather strip foam. Connected it to an ESP32. Basically when the two pieces of foil touch, it will be “on”, aka someone is in the bed. If you put it under the mattress when someone is laying in the bed, it will cause the two pieces of foil to touch. I’ve had this set up for 3 months and it works perfectly.

Great video. I'm just starting out with those automations little by little. I'm trying to make an alexa automation for my echo dot so when I say good night It will shutdown the lights + shutdown the echo led clock lights + set an alarm 8.5 hours from that moment. I did not manage to do it through my alexa app. How do you think I will be able to do it? Thanks!

Alexa isn't capable of mathematic functions as far as I'm aware, so you probably can't do this. You would probably need to add home assistant to your setup for that.

You could create a custom command for the Alexa routine. I tried it and it could create a timer 8 hours from then.

Long time viewer first time commenter. I have a few smart home devices and just got a hub. I was hoping to automate the ceiling fan we have in the house. What is the best way to go about this? Can I just use a smart wall switch and wire it to the fan? I believe I haven't seen any videos on your channel about smart ceiling fans.

question about the garage door lights. I think this is an awesome idea, but if you get home and walk in the house before closing the garage door, do the lights still blink? Or is there some sort of override or a way to tell it to only run when you have been home more than X minutes? That seems like it could get messy with 2 adults coming and going, to not flash the lights all the time.

Dude, I have an idea I want to do at my new home. I have a cabinet that I'd like to make into a safebox. I have a hidden 12v cabinet lock that I can connect to my Tuya app (where all my switches and things live right now), and I'd like to find a way to have it open after a secret sequence of opening the office door and turning on and off the workbench light a few times. I feel like this would need to be done in MQTT or at least Home Assistant. Since I moved, I have been trying to do all automations in Tuya or Google Home so that I don't have to get HA or MQTT back up. If I can't do it with only Google Home or Tuya, I'd still think a video on this would be excellent! I can't find much online about a secret combination of devices opening another device. Cheers!
