Larry’s arm was burned as a child. His father was a jeweler who used acid to test metals for gold. Little Larry almost drank some thinking it was water, and acid splashed on his arm when his dad knocked the container out of his hand. A doctor recommended violin lessons as a form of physical therapy, leading to a lifelong love of music, a career in vaudeville, and ultimately his place as the Middle Stooge. Curly, on the other hand, accidentally shot himself in the ankle while out hunting as a teenager. You can sometimes see him limp, and he would play it up for laughs into a mincing walk, but he often suffered pain, and was too afraid to have the bone re-broken and set properly by an orthopedic surgeon.
From everything I've ever heard, read or watched, it was Luis Fineberg (Larry Fine) who was burned by acid....in his father's jewelry shop. The rest, I don't doubt. I can personally take comfort that since his passing, he is no longer suffering and now fully aware of the immense joy he brought others, and how much love and respect they/we had/have for him!
You are absolutely correct it was Larry that got burned by acid curly shot himself in the leg or foot while cleaning a gun when he was young this guy has his facts all mixed up Aloha to you my friend I hope you are doing well
He also talked about his "termination" from Columbia. Making it seem like he was fired due to his lifestyle. He had a massive stroke and could no longer perform. They were hoping he could get better and come back but he never did.
This guy needs to get his fact straight. Like @kdm71291 says below it was Larry Fine who had acid burns. It was also Larry whose wife Mabel dies unexpectedly from a hear attack and Larry's son who died in a car crash at 24. Curly was married four time (divorced three) and he had two daughters.
Curly Howard was simply the BEST!!!❤he made laugh more than any other else !! he's the reason l loved to watch the 3 Stooges, wish he could have had a happier life 😢❤
Curly's heart was so large people could see it inside of him all the time. I was addicted to the 3 Stooges all my life but especially Curly. I heard how much he loved his daughter late in his life and his wife also. Sometimes I wonder if Curly had a temper problem at times, but after all he lived through in his life time, I know I would have had problems with my temper too. There is not much chance of him knowing how much he was loved and adored by millions of people in his life time, but I am sure he knows up in Heaven. He still is a inspiration to us, and a character in film through time. Love ya Curly!!
There's no doubt Curly put on the biggest and best front, in front of the other Stooges, for the world to see despite his personal life, which he didn't want the world to see.
I know that Moe always tried to protect Curly and spent the rest of his life blaming himself for his death..💔 Moe never recovered from the trauma of losing both brothers (Shemp died in 1955 of a heart attack, 3 and half years after Curly) in few years time.
Curly was a natural, absolute comic genius. He had the facial expressions, vocals, mannerisms, body motions, and excellent timing. None like him, before, or since. It is my opinion that he contributed the most in making The Three Stooges the greats they were, in the stage performing part of it.
So Curly was just like the rest of us...he had lots of hard ships in life and battled demons....that's the real world...Curly was the greatest and he will forever live in my heart...RIP my brother...
Thank God there was no internet back then. His personal life and business would've gone viral for the world to see. Who the hell wants that? I feel like Curly was a brother to everyone who was touched and affected in a relatable way to his comedic talent, especially while going through the unfortunate hardships and unpleasant realities of life
He will always be my favorite stooge of the 3 Stooges. Curly Howard was actually the best and the youngest brother of Shemp Howard and also Moe Howard. He was actually called Babe as in baby brother; RIP Curly Howard Nyuk Nyuk Nyuk Nyuk.
Curly was self conscious about shaving his head, when he had a full head of hair and a mustache, he was quite the ladies man. This was when Moe, Larry and Shemp were with Ted Healy still. Shemp quit the act due to Healy's drinking and the Stooges bad salary.
I thought Larry was the one that had acidic burns that’s why he took up boxing. Read somewhere curly shot himself in the leg and had a limp but hid it in the shows.
I know…how do you make a video and get everything wrong. Mabel was Larry’s wife, Larry was the one burned by acid, and he was the gambling addict. Curly’s problem was alcohol. He also didn’t die alone, he was happily married, and had a five-year-old daughter that he doted on.
Curly's fourth wife was named Valerie (Newman), who was the mother of his daughter Janie. His first wife was Julia Rosenthal, his second wife was Elaine Ackerman, who was the mother of his daughter Marilyn and his third wife was Marion Buxbaum. Mabel (Haney) was the wife of Larry Fine, not Curly as reported in this video. Curly (Jerome Howard) was the brother of Moe Howard and Shemp Howard, original last name Horwitz.
A lot of comedic geniuse like Curley Howard, are often times, tortured souls in real life. Just look at John Belushi and Robin Williams, are just a couple of examples.
Just these shorts from the movies made me laugh again and made me realize what a great movie comedian you really are! 😂 Thank You for all the fantastic work and MGBY Curly.❤
The injury and wife and son death was about Larry Fine! Curly accidentally shot himself in the leg when he was a boy. He had a life long limp after that which he hid on screen with the now know as the Curly Shuffle
I'm 69 yo and i grew up watching these guys ! Curly was then and to this day still my favorite ! Just watching the little bits in this piece made me laugh !
Pardon me, but to actually do Curly proud, one ought to know the difference between Curly and Larry. It was Larry whose arm was burnt by acid as a little boy, who had and lost a son named Johnny to a car accident (Curly had two daughters who are still alive.), and had and lost his wife Mabel (Curly's last wife outlived him). In fact, Curly himself died years before the deaths of John and Mabel Fine, aka LARRY'S wife and son.
There was never nor will ever be anything like the Stooges, and Curly was great Underappreciated in their time, their lasting contribution to comedy shows that time is the ultimate arbiter on artistic worth- and all the Adam Sandlers, Jimmy Kimmels, and Kathy Griffins in the world will have long flickered out before the Stooges ever go out of style.
I just hope Curly knew how much he influenced a lot of people. In high school 50 years ago everyone, most everyone emulated him by nyuk nyuk nyuk and wise guy. Even the teachers knew it.
I Think That Fact Number 4 Was A Mistake Because It Wasn’t Curly But It Was Larry Fine Who Suffered From Acidic Burns From A Childhood Accident Which Led Larry To Study Violin To Rehabilitate His Arm Because Of The Burn!!!
So it was Larry who suffered the acid burn on his arm but he was a boxer for awhile so it couldn’t have been super debilitating. It was Larry’s son who died in a car accident apparently. Curly accidentally shot himself in the foot. That actually led to some of his unique moves, and his trademark limp. Curly is the king. Lots of folks have a dark side. It just shows more contrast when a guy is a comic. Keep laughing everyone!
There is no record of Curly having a son named Johnny nor any of his four wives died before him. He had a daughter Marilyn and a daughter Janie. He was divorced 3 times and his fourth wife outlived him, GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT
I am 70 years old and I still love the stooges.....especially Jerome Horwitz He unfortunately passed away before I was born, but I get replays every day What a crew...... my favorite was Christine McIntire..... such a beautiful lady...... also the boys and Vernon Dent..... If medication was available in his time for high blood pressure he probably would have lived a lot longer RIP Curley ..... and all the Stooges characters!
Fact #7 at 5:00 was Larry NOT Curly - please don't spread incorrect info. In reference to Larry Fine - "Mabel's death came nearly six years after the death of their only son, John, in a car crash on November 17, 1961, at age 24" 9 years after Curly died.
Thank you for an excellent programme on my favourite Comedian and Favourite Stooge. I loved Curly and his hilarious antics. Although Moe, Larry and the others including Shemp were great; CURLY WAS BEST!!! Whenever there were re-runs of THE THREE STOOGES on TV; I would wait for the shows that included Curly before I would watch those shows. God Rest your Soul Curly, and may HIS DIVINE LIGHT SHINE ON THEE! Thank you for the wonderful laughs which I get even today; 70 years on. Even watching your antics on this programme, I cracked up laughing. SHALOM!!!!
It's true we all have our favorite Stooge. I liked Curly alot but found Larry to be funnier in his own way. Larry held his own and was an virtuoso as well.
This guy needs to get his fact straight. Like @kdm71291 says below it was Larry Fine who had acid burns. It was also Larry whose wife Mabel died unexpectedly from a hear attack and Larry's son who died in a car crash at 24. Curly was married four time (divorced three) and he had two daughters.
You are getting the facts wrong, some of these aren’t what happened to curly, but to larry. Do research before you make a video on curly. Stop misinforming people
From what I read after I watch this video, he has only 2 daughters. He was married 4 times so I don't know about the loss of his wife and son that you are refering. He shot his foot when he was a kid, no acid I think. You may get some facts right...
You have your facts wrong about Curly Howard. First of all, Curly never had a wife who died. He was married four times and divorced three times. Secondly, Curly never had a son. He had two daughters and therefore, never had a son who was killed in an automobile accident. It was Larry Fine whose 24 year old son Johnny that was killed in an automobile accident in 1961.
Curly never had a son, it was Larry's son who was killed in a car wreck. Mable was Larry's wife, not Curly's wife. Please do some simple research and correc this video.
You are wrong in saying Curly had a 24- year- old son and wife named Mable. It is Larry who lost his 24-year-old son, and Larry's wife was named Mable. Also, it was Larry that had acidic burns on his arm.
ALL OF THE FUNNIEST COMEDY ACTORS ARE ALL DEAD NOW AND OLIVA NORVAL HARDY DIED FROM A STROKE AND STAN LAUREL DIED FROM A HEART ATTACK AT THE AGE OF 65 YEARS OLD AND THEY WERE THE FUNNIEST COMEDY TEAM THAT EVER LIVED R.I.P YOU GUYS YOU ARE GONE FOREVER BUT NEVER FORGOTTEN 😔
Curly had acid burns on his arm? NO, that was Larry! The loss of the son and wife was ALSO LARRY. John was Larry's son, and Mabel was Larry's wife. Larry was also known to have a gambling problem. Get your facts straight! However, a lot of Curly's insecurities stemmed from the fact he didn't think women found him attractive because of his shaved head, and that was why he drank so much and why he overate.
I love jerome curley horwitz he was a very funny guy on the three stooges he's my favourite stooge of all time he was a good actor in movies and the three stooges rip to him in paradise gone but not forgotten about with the Lord 🙏 forever amen in heaven with God 🙏.
This video is rife with errors! It was Larry who burned himself, Larry who lost his son (Curly never had a son), and Curly never had a wife named Mabel! What a stooge this announcer is.
Correction: This documentation has various mistakes. Curly’s wife was not Mabel, that was Larry’s wife. Larry and Mabel had a son who died in a car accident at age 24. Curly didn’t have any sons. Just two daughters . Marilyn with his second wife Elaine Ackerman, and Jannie with his fourth and last wife name Valerie Newman. Curly did had a stepson briefly, that was with his third wife Marion Barbeaux.
Larry had the accident with acid. That's why he learned to play the violin. I heard the only one good with money was Moe. Larry again with son and wife, not far apart. The more I'm watching this, the more I'm doubting what is being said. Later years, he died in his 40's of I remember correctly.
One more tragic incident that happened that was not mentioned here is he shot himself in the left leg as a kid and lived in pain the rest of his life. When he runs you can see a slight limp
REST IN PEACE; TO CURLY HOWARD; OF THE THREE STOOGES; AND HE"LL CONTINUE TO PERFORMED; WITH MOE HOWARD; AND LARRY FINE; AND YOU GUYS ARE THE BEST!!❤❤😊😊
I don't doubt that some of what is presented is true. But, (1) He was was a divocee not a widower. He was married four times. (2) He passed away in 1953. So even if he had a son who died in 1964 and a wife in 1967 there is no way he could have been afftected by such. (3) It was Larry Fine who was burnt severily by acid as a child. The way I understand it he actually picked to drink it when his dad knocked out of his hands! He saved his life but suffered severe burns. One of the reasons he played the violin was to help get his muscles working in his arm. I won't deny some of the facts. But a couple things clearly are wrong. Also remember that Curly had some strokes too. That is why they wanted to put him in a mental home.
This guy has his facts all mixed up it was Larry that burned his arm with acid in his father's shop curly shot himself in the leg or foot cleaning a gun when he was young
Many things said here are plain wrong or stated more than once. He didn’t get burned by acid, Larry did. He didn’t have a 24 year old son and a wife named Mabel, Larry did.
Too bad so much of this is wrong. 1. Curly accidentally shot himself in the ankle. Larry Fine was the one who burned himself on the arm with acid. 2. Curly didn't have any sons, he had two daughters. Larry Fine's son tragically died in a car accident. 3. Curly was not an alcoholic. According to Joan Maurer Howard's book on Curly, it's true that Curly did like to go out to nightclubs and loved the ladies but his ex-wives were interviewed and they all said he was not an alcoholic whatsoever. His health battles were mostly from his obesity, he had out of control blood pressure that resulted in a series of small strokes before a major stroke forced him to leave the Three Stooges in 1946.
Curly was not burned by acid. That happened to Larry. Curly accidentally shot himself in the foot when he was young giving him his very noticeable limp.
Who cares?all I want is the joy and laughter that curly brought to millions he was the paverbial back bone to the stooges and to me was the stooges most funny and genuine I loved Shemp and Moe but Curly made them shine like Jerry Lewis did with Martin there will never be another stooges trio no matter how much they try you can’t go back home especially without you Mr Curly Howard Shalom
Always 2 sides to a pancake ! Addiction is a formidable for and not everyone is prepared nor equipped to do battle with! Talent and addiction are strange bedfellows !
Childhood acid burning was Larry as was the loss of a son. Larry's wife was Mable. Larry was also known as gambler while Curly lost money because he would often lend money to others but did not get paid back (or so I've heard or read). Curly suffered a self inflicted bullet injury to his leg during his childhood. Moe dragged him to a hospital and may well have saved his life. Leg pain could have contributed to his alcohol addiction. Despite all the personal pain and conflicts, the one thing that I have consistently heard or read about over the years was that all three of the Stooges were very good fathers who adored their children.
@@Vintage.ShowTV Thank you for the video. I'm in my 70s and have always loved Curly. Am so glad young folks from the current generation do the same. I sincerely believe that he will loved equally well for many generations to come.
Most Three Stooges fans know all about Curly's struggles. Also, this video is inaccurate. Curly never had acidic burns on his arm resulting in muscle damage, nor did he have a wife named Mabel or a son named John who was killed in a car accident. Both of those things happened to Larry. Curly did experience a freak accident as a child; he shot himself in the leg while cleaning a rifle. I don't know exactly what happened but I'm guessing that the bullet got lodged in his bone. In any case, the injury resulted in him developing a limp. His doctor thought that the limp could be surgically corrected, but Curly was afraid of surgery, so he never bothered. When he decided to become a comedian, he masked the limp by developing an exaggerated way of walking that is visible in many of the Three Stooges shorts. As far as his wife and children go, he was married four times and had two daughters; one with his second wife, Elaine, and one with his fourth wife Valerie. The older of his two daughters, Marilyn has two sons, Darren and Brad Server. Brad is a comedian and performs under the name Curly G (G being short for Grandson).
