Whats scary is that we have this for our curfew. At 8:00 PM sharp, they sound this horn everywhere ( idk if its everywhere tho ) and its scary because street night watchers *WILL* shoot you to death if your not home. I live in the Philippines.
I grew up in Park City in the 60's ad 70's. We always called this "The 10 o'clock Whistle". And I remember playing outside, and we knew we'd be in trouble if we weren't in the door by the time the whistle stopped blowing. So when it went off, there was a mad 30 second dash to get into the house. Listening to this brought back a lot of memories. Is it still going off? I thought they'd shut it down years ago! Thanks for posting... {:{)}
I remember they had one in Balsam Lake, Wisconsin, the town where my folks grew up. It would sound every day at noon except on weekends as I recall, then at nine o'clock at night. Again I don't think it would sound on weekends or at least not on Saturdays. But we referred to it as the noon or nine o'clock whistle. THen of course it was also the emergency warning. But I remember there was a sort of urban legend that my brother and to a lesser extent my mom used to tell us younger kids, that if we weren't inside by the time the nine o'clock whistle stopped blowing there were these creatures called Jigs that would come out and eat us. So many memories...
Growing up in Salt Lake City I can remember a whistle, we called it the 8:00 o'clock whistle, each morning. It was around thru the fifties, and sixties, I'm sure. Where was it? why did it end? what was it for?
